Yes lets hope so ;). The coils came in a £20 each delivered and just £9.5 for each plug (Amazon.co.uk) but I am on the look out for any suspicious clones that seem to be about. Plan to swap in 2 coils and carry one good used spare in the boot, so that if another one fails, at least I will be able to get home easily (from a longer trip) and then change the rest later.

Never seen the injector indexes yet, hopefully I'll get a visual on them soon. Or maybe take a closer look if rendered in the software (INPA or ISTA-D), though I've not noticed. Would be nice to know.

Also occasionally experience a very minor stutter once in a while ~70mph, say after about 10 mins getting out of the city and a couple of miles later. Seems like either trying to get into Stratified mode too early (power drops slightly and bails out quickly) or like you suspect, just purging the NOx particles with a hot mixture burn off.

Did mine from the top, bit fiddly but not too bad. Used 3M tape to mount the balast. All solid a year on. See my earlier pic for where the balast etc went.

bmwmike reacted to Spandex in Mask or no mask - what's your choice & opinion
A few things to unpack here...

    1. If putting your hand over your mouth when you coughed or sneezed was the solution, then the government would have to make that mandatory instead. Do you think that's workable? Nor me, so a mask will have to do.
    2. Masks do provide some protection for other people. This isn't a binary question, so if a mask makes other people in a room 20% less likely to catch covid off you then that's worth the minimal inconvenience it causes. I suspect though, that it's more than a 20% reduction.
    3. Taking your mask off once seated.. Again, this isn't a binary question. If people wear masks when standing up, then take them off when they sit down, the chances of them passing on covid are reduced overall for the duration of their time there. It's about balancing convenience against risk.
    4. If you get run over by a bus less than 28 days from a +ve covid test it's only a covid death for the governents daily stats. Your death certificate won't list covid and the ONS death statistics (the ones used for the proper total covid deaths) won't include you. The only reason the government use the 'within 28 days of a +ve test' statistics is because the more accurate death certificate data takes a long time to be generated. So, the less accurate data is used for fast comparisons with previous days/weeks, and the more accurate death certificate data lags behind this.
    5. Claiming you're exempt when you're not, just to get out of wearing a bit of cloth on your face will probably work absolutely fine, however you will then have to deal with the crushing humiliation of knowing that everyone else knuckled down and did their best, while you were a massive, whinging baby. Personally, I'd just put on my big-boy pants and wear the mask.
    6. You don't need to trust the government. I certainly don't. But I do trust the scientists - not to be infallible, but to be sensible.

JFDI if you give a f%ck at all about either your loved ones or the public at large - it isn't (after going through all those months of mandatory wearing masks) a great hardship. It's not about how you think about yourself and your 'compliance' or your 'personal liberties' - it's about how you consider everyone else - and it shows.

Best case it saves your life or that of a loved one.

I made some wooden blocks that fit inside the plastic jacking points, and they help take the weight and avoid damage to the plastic cup of the jacking point - seems to work well.

Been out for a 10 mile drive today in mixed conditions. Going to put vanos seals down as a success.

Idles nicer from cold and no oil smell so hopefully it’s oil right now.

Whether it’s faster or not I’m not sure but feels smoother but that could be in my mind.

Oh yes given the choice of axle stands in the road or on a private driveway there is no contest lol. Just sure you're safe. Once its up in the air I usually give the car a good rock to make sure its settled etc.  As others have said keep a jack under it or a wheel anyway so if the worst happens its not coming all the way down.  Also if the blocks did shift I doubt it would happen instantly. Still better to spread the load if possible though, i think.

Block paving may not take the point loading. I wouldnt use axle stands on my block driveway as the blocks are loose in places. I would with some solid wood planks to spread the load though, underneath the stands.

Better safe than sorry as already said. I had a megane slip off a jack once and narrowly missed my legs. I dread to think what could have happened.

    Hi to all,

It has been an awful year with many friends and family members passing away. A few were Covid related, but others were unexpected and came as a shock. Last night I learned my cousin is in an induced coma and may not recover following a massive heart attack aged 59! He is only a few months older than me!

I won't dwell on the negative; instead, I want to thank everyone who helped me or just read my ramblings and wish you all the best as 2021 draws to a close.

    Stay safe and be kind!

I didn't really take it in when @bmwmike mentioned it earlier, but the bearing is indeed made up of actual ball bearings.

I had incorrectly assumed it would have been two tapered roller bearings in it.

I picked out the oil seal with a radiator hose removal tool and then had a poke about in the race.  It has a plastic cage which I was able to break a small piece out.

The ABS 'ring' must be integral into the oil/grease seal which in turn is protected/hidden behind the silver cover.

More destruction investigation will follow once I get some cutting discs.

bmwmike reacted to Petebmr in Replaced M54 vanos seals. WOW!!!
So I replaced my vanos seals on my M54B22 yesterday, and all I can say is wow!! The difference is phenomenal!! Perfectly smooth idle on cold start, no more hesitation around 2-2.5k or any power surges from 3.5k upwards, just delivers power lovely and smooth from as soon as I pull off! If you haven’t done yours, do them!! Mine has got 192k on it and had no history of them ever being done, again another fiddly job, but well worth it!! Attached a video so you can see how loose the pistons were in there.

In fairness, apparently according to bimmerprofs its good to work them hard because of the variable oil pressure and it stops everything clogging up.

I went through this recently on my n53 (albeit later version in an f10). AFAIK there is no separate breather, its all in the valve cover. I chiselled off my oil separator and replaced it with a new membrane and aluminium cap. It has worked perfectly since.

What exactly is wrong with yours?  Screaming like a belt slipping or smoke?

    Yup!

I posted elsewhere about this but i've just gone from 5-30 to 5-40 and my n53 is definitely sounding better. Not quieter, necessarily, but better - almost deeper and less rattly. Whenever i hear of comments like these on forums I do tend to be sceptical but its certainly something i noticed this time around. IIRC i ran my old m52tu on '40 too, 0-40 Mobil iirc.

Actually thinking about it turbos run pretty hot so a 40 would make sense imo. I think 30 is more for lower friction and better mpg, probably at the expense of protection if pushing it a little much.

Agree 5w or 0w neither here nor there, but for hotter running engines i'd still go with a 40W over a 30W. I don't think that applies to diesels. I know my n53 gets to 120c oil temp regularly and a good quality oil (millers this time) at a 0/5W-40 would cope better.

Yup, I was right, the domed shape is just pushed onto the balljoint and there are tiny splines on both the balljoint. I was able to pull it off using a bearing puller.

I'm in the process of filling/grinding out the metal on the arm holding in the balljoint to try and see what goes on it there,  I think there might be a plastic bearing in there from what I can see.

Just thought id share the results from the tests of the injectors, this is after I replaced the horrible rotten filters inside. After a couple of rounds of ultrasonic cleaning they are back to new,  even the ones is good condition benefited looking at the flows rates before and after. Easy way to get the HP back more fuel is more power, the engine will quickly relearn the adaptations
