    M54B30 engine pinking/pinging/knocking/detonating

OK thanks, will look into that. Plugs are at the parts store waiting to be picked up. Have not checked coil packs. What I think is still strange, lets say that a coil pack had given up. Surely this was cause a misfire, rather than detonation? How do I check packs are ok. I don't get any misfires? Good point about the DISA. Il'll get that off and check the O-ring.

    M54B30 engine pinking/pinging/knocking/detonating

DISA valve was replaced by previous owner at 90k miles, car is on 124k now. I wouldn't have though it was that. CCV could probably do with replacing, but given how many of these cars have bad CCVs I would have thought I would have heard of detonation being a symptom of this. I haven't found much at all of detonation issues with these engines. What am I expecting with filler cap off. Suck my hand onto the opening a little bit?
  4. Hi All, I have an issue with my M54B30. It detonates under load a cruising speeds. Most commonly at 70 on the motorway with the cruise control on and I come to an incline so the car just opens the throttle to maintain speed. Here's what I've tried/ found out so far; Intake boot replaced as there was a split it in it. I thought this would cure it as there was now no unmetered air getting in. Smoke test after boot replacement showed no leaks. Disconnected the MAF for a bit to see if running on the default map would cure as I believe it ends to run a bit rich to be on the safe side. Gave it time to re-adapt, made no difference, still pinking, so plugged it back in. Plugged in the laptop to see if the fuel trims would tell a story. Indicative trim -0.04 on both banks, not a problem Multiplicative trim +2.69 on one bank and a bit less on the other. I don't think this is a massive problem. Lambda integrator values are bang in the middle on idle and if I recall on the border of the red and green under load towards the lean side. Where should the lambda integrator be under 3/4 load medium revs? No lean codes, no O2 sensor codes at any time. If the air is fine it leads me to a fuel problem. This does not have the symptoms of a blocked fuel filter or fuel pressure regulator (someone correct me on that if you think its wrong) I'm not sure where to look next. I am thinking of replacing all vacuum hoses, CCV, air distributor anyway to rule them out, but would take some time to get the funds for this, and the smoke test leads me to think this area is ok anyway. Could it be an injector problem? If its not too much air, then could it be too little fuel causing lean running and detonation. I always, always use Shell fuel. While this problem has been going on I have upped the ante to V-power to increase knock resistance and added an octane booster to help a bit more, and this does quieten things down a bit. I would rather find the source of the problem though. Could anyone lend a hand or make any suggestions. If you're good with inpa I can come over sometime and go for a drive with the laptop plugged in. I would obviously compensate you for your time. I'm in Walthamstow, North East London. Thanks in advance for any help.
  5. Hi Teddy, Did you get this done in the end? I think mine will need doing soon. Who are the guys in Kingston who did this for £400. Might be a bit more now year and a half later! Thanks in advance.

I Don't even know what mine are. ECP did t o ow either. Although I had no choice anyway. I was lucky they had them in stock as it was.

    Touring SLS failure

You make a good point. I did think about leaving the other one. But I thought while I'm here I may as well do the other one. If the one that burst had reached its lifespan, there's a good chance the other one is close too, plus I had all the interior trim out and the tools out etc. I've got piece of mind now the other one won't got in another few months. Not sure what the design life on these is So this one had done 116k miles and lasted 14 years. I put the same pictures below on FB on E39 club.

Today's solution for my failed airbag: Drive to Euro car parts Maidstone from Ashford. Grab em £326 trade. Fit on driveway. Lovely. Wish me luck.

    Touring SLS failure

Hi everyone, One of my air bags has just popped and the car is sitting on its arse. I can hear it hissing as its trying to pump it up. What I need to know is, can I drive it like this or will it damage things. Presumably its sitting on the bump stops which are meant for occasional use. Would it sit at 50 on the motorway OK. Got to get back to London this evening. 70mile drive. Thoughts/ experience appreciated please. I'll probably delete the SLS after this.

    Exhaust upgrade help

Thanks. I will def put some pics up. It will be a while before I get this done I get the feeling as this isn't something I'm rushing into. Can't take the risk of getting it wrong. Move listened to a lot of you tube clips. The closest I've found to the sound I like I've posted below. But again so many variables. It's a saloon, not a touring so taking a different route might make it sound different, it's on a you tube video, no idea exactly what has been done, I.e full system, cat back, or just mufflers. See what people thing about the tone... hear how it growls, lots of low frequencies, a little bit of an off beat. No rasp, which is good. Doesnt blare, a bit of a woofle. Hard to put into words I suppose, and even harder to know how it's going to sound before you spend a big wad! Thanks for your input.

Thanks. I'll bear that in mind. That makes sense that they can pack and un pack the mufflers, but I'm assuming that that would change the volume of the exhaust, whereas as I'm looking to get the fundamental tones and character of the sound right, which I assume, as I'm no expert, is to do with which frequencies the resonator and muffler kill or let through, and a load of other variables that I k ow nothing about. Thanks for the tip though. I'll check them out.
