What did you do to your E39 today ?

It's just been MoT'd - advisory on a chip in the windscreen and a slightly rusty fuel line at the rear. Not too shabby I don't think!
  2. If it makes you feel any better, I remember reading on here about the bloke who dismantled the rear seat and removed the parcel shelf on a saloon to change the...... 3rd brake light bulb!

    Starting issue (no crank)

If it helps I had this exact issue with my E34. Turned out the transponder in the key had died (I didn't know they could do that!) and it just wouldn't let it crank. Tried the other key and it was fine.
  4. I can second BMWmotormec - very helpful if you call them as well

    E34 in a music video...

Shameless self publicity, but recently I had a little trip to a place just outside London to have my E34 filmed for a music video. I'd never heard of the artist, but it was an interesting (and long!) experience. I did however get a free Chinese out of it!! I think the E34 suited the dark mood of the video, shame the shot of it with all four headlamps ablaze was left on the cutting room floor

Help removing stuck inner tie rod from rack

Use a Viscous fan spanner - the BMW one I've got has a 32mm end and a 36. Longer than a normal spanner so gives better leverage. That's what I used when I did mine. Just realised this post is from late Jan so you've probably done it by now...! If not if you're local to Warminster you're welcome to borrow my spanner.

What have you done on your E34 Today

Well... that was an interesting Monday night/Tuesday morning! I'm probably not allowed to give any details away, so I won't, but I was on the fringes of London having the 520 filmed for a soon to be released music video! The car is basically in the entire video, unfortunately having driven it from Shaftesbury that afternoon it wasn't at its cleanest.... Certainly an interesting experience, and nice to have the car "immortalised" in some way.

    accelerator sticking,

Glad to hear that sorted it! Mine manifested after a few month layup - from cold the throttle would "hang" and it turned out it was simply gummed up. When warm it would be ok.

    accelerator sticking,

I had this after a long lay up - I ended simply drenching the mechanism at the throttle body end in WD40 which freed it up. Could be this? Cheap (i.e. free!) fixes before spending money. Caveat - unless I've completely misinterpreted and it's catching rather than "sticky" or hanging as such.

    Rarity factor?!

Just idly browsing and found a dutch for sale page from a few years ago of a 1 owner 525 tds - firstly how tidy is (was) this, secondly, this must be the only one with cloth comfort seats surely? https://www.nfautomotive.nl/uk/car/46/bmw-525tds-e39-original-1st-owner! I think i'd prefer that to the nasty standard leather on my comfort seats...

    Rarity factor?!

It is rather lovely - I don't know for definite, but surely cloth comforts must have been a special order?

    Anti Roll Bar bush brackets

I'm in the process of rebuilding the front suspension of my 530i, and just wanted to clarify whether the ARB bush brackets need to be torqued up with the suspension in the "normal" position (i.e. car on the ground like the control arm bolts to the body) or can they be done with the car in the air and drop links connected? Also am I right in thinking that the ball joints of the control arms can be torqued up with the car in the air and wheels off? Thanks as always chaps

    Anti Roll Bar bush brackets

    Thanks - good to know!

What did you do to your E39 today ?

Got most of the front end stripped down, ready for new arms, droplinks, arb bushes, track rods, and nsf wheel bearing. Bearing bolts defeated my impact gun so taking the assembly to a local garage tomorrow to get them to remove them - the only thing that has beaten me so far! Thankfully got the e34 as backup so I can take my time...

    Oxford Green e34 530i v8 auto

I'd be taking a hair dryer and some floss with me to get rid of that horrendous lettering on the back before driving it away.

    No gauges....

Morning all, Went to fire up my 530i this morning, to be greeted to no life from any of the gauges! The car started up fine (warning lights coming on and going out like they should), panel lights work, indicators worked and tell tales flashed and ticked, wipers worked. Just no gauges, or odometer or OBC (low OBC). Didn't try the radio I must admit. I dropped my Girlfriend to the railway station then drove back and got the E34 to take to work instead! Is this likely to be the ignition switch? Before ordering anything up when I get home I was going to disconnect the battery and reconnect and see if it was just having a funny 5 minutes.

    No gauges....

I suppose it could - although it wasn’t particularly cold this morning - couldn’t tell how cold though with the lack of obc haha
  22. The Spooner

    No gauges....

Well, err, that was weird - just got home and thought id have a try and the gauges now all work... I haven’t cancelled the order for the switch just in case... I will see what happens from cold tomorrow!
  23. The Spooner

    No gauges....

No I haven't to be honest - another thing I'll have a look at when I get home tonight, thank you. I must admit I was tight for time this morning so I jumped out of it and jumped into my E34 to come to work. Hopefully the rain here will ease off...!
  24. The Spooner

    No gauges....

Thanks guys, no I haven't had chance to read codes yet, well not since this problem (I had a quick check two days ago which only revealed a faulty thermostat heating element) - and not sure if my basic code reader would pick anything up... I've been meaning to get some proper kit for ages! Yep will try the battery when I get home, I'll order a switch anyway as I could always send it back I suppose if it's not required ultimately. Thank you again

Finally back on the road! MoT’d today after having some of my welding, umm, corrected... as well as some mechanical bits. I’ve missed driving her
