    Is the bonnet latch catching on the grille? This can make it fail to pop out. I would strongly advise everyone, having had a cable holder break and lock me out (!) to lube up everything under there. Thankfully Emtec in Salisbury managed to open it and sort it out...

    Hi all, Wondered if anyone had any non locking wheel bolts for an E34, with standard basket weave alloywheels, and how much would you want for them? I need 4 (I am fed up with locking wheel bolts!!) Thanks

    I have a 530i manual, and aside from an ocasionally recalcitrant gearbox when cold (probably needs a service) it’s quite enjoyable. The 3.0 litre engine is torquey and tractable enough that you don’t need to change gears too much if you want, but it does come alive when you want to play. I do not doubt that the auto box is more suited to the nature of the E39 though, and wouldn’t reject an E39 fitted with such. Plus autos seem to be better specced.

    Another recommendation for BMWmotormec here - I bought all front control arms, track rods and track rod ends, drop links, and ARB bushes from them (Meyle, and I think the drop links were lemforder. I think...) and they arrived very promptly, and really did not cost all that much relatively speaking. Plus they are always happy to discuss things to make sure you get the right parts. My only issue was when they sent out an expansion tank for a 535i/540i, but they happily refunded without a quibble on return of the part

    Is that a road where loads of cars crash but the cost of recovery just isn't worth it so they are simply abandoned?

    My Girlfriend is on a hen do, so what better opportunity to spend 5 hours washing, cleaning the wheels with a toothbrush (!), clay barring, polishing, touching in stone chips, adding extra gloss protection, blackening the trims, waxing, and polishing the glasshouse. Phew!

    Must be - from what I’ve read and heard about the Japanese people, they seem an honest and honourable lot generally. Weren’t they the lot who after their World Cup game cleaned up their part of the stadium?

    Looks lovely, I've never got the lack of parking sensors on the otherwise seemingly well specced Japanese cars. Are they just that much better at parking than us?
  13. What niggly, trivial problems do you have, that to most of the world's population wouldn't matter? I'll start with the fact that on a recent sunny day, when using global opening one of my windows didn't open! I was incredulous at having to get in the car and open this final window myself. Like a pleb. Also, the nearside mirror that dips so I can see the kerb when I put the car in reverse hasn't been returning to the correct position. Gah! What a catastrophe!
  14. I recently replaced my thermostat, water pump, and radiator, and all was going well (bastard fan shroud aside!) until I went to bleed up. I've done this a few times before, heater fan to low, temp to 32 degrees, knurled wheel to hot, to activate the aux pump and bleed the system. This time, however, even though I got the familiar whine of (what I thought was) the aux pump, no coolant appeared to be moving! Now, admittedly, a radiator and water pump replacement removed a lot more coolant from the system than the odd T'stat or hose change I've done in the past. In the end I managed to bleed it the old fashioned heath robinson way and all seems ok (i.e. starting the car and . Admittedly I haven't tested the pump or removed it to inspect. Question is, given the amount of coolant removed from the system, should I have waited a while for it to pump coolant around the system? I did fill the expansion bottle prior to starting the bleed procedure, and then I waited about a minute with what I thought was the pump running, but still saw no movement. Maybe I'm just impatient! Clearly if this isn't right, then it requires replacement as I don't like to do things improperly, especially bleeding the cooling system on this car! (Although I appear to have gotten away with it the way I did it.) Thanks as always!
  15. Quite correct - however a chillier morning this week allowed me to test it after I drove to work, and the rest function worked fine. A colleague suggested a localised air pocket around the impeller of the aux pump, which on its own it couldn't shift, hence no coolant movement, but with the engine driven pump then operating managed to shift it. Makes sense to me, I'm probably being paranoid about the pump!

    Front, Lower Control arm bolt too small???

    From what I recall, from when I did my control arms late last year, the bolt was loose (and I went to BMW and bought new nuts and bolts) until tightened up.
  17. Ah right, just what I feared! I suppose, logically, the "rest" function uses the aux pump to circulate coolant into the heater, so arguably it's an easy test to see if its working by activating the rest function later on when I get home. Or I'm completely wide of the mark!

Oh I have been - the level normalised after two cold cycles so I'm confident it's bled correctly, I suppose I was just more concerned that either I'm not patient enough and the aux pump would have eventually made itself known, or that no, that's not normal and it should be instantaneous and therefore it's goosed and requires replacement.

    I looked at it - again. Still stripped down, still waiting for the thermostat to arrive... the sodding radiator (that I decided the car needed) managed to arrive before it! not all bad I suppose, I’ve been driving my E34 all week. Miss the speed of the 530i though...

    I'm sure this has been asked before, and apologies if it has, but what brands of water pump are recommended these days? I've got a slight leak from mine and will change it, probably along with the thermostat although I only did that a year ago - but certainly wouldn't hurt to have the part on hand "whilst I'm in there".     Which I can only assume, given the equipment levels they came with (or lack thereof), stood for "Extra Spartan". IIRC they were 520i and 525d only?

    I have indeed! Well, similar to that, it's the long double ended spanner and similarly long pulley holder. Absolute godsend though - I bought a generic spanner and it wouldn't fit due to the crank on it!

    The shiny chrome ///M on my “M sport” gear-lever (which it’s had from new even though it’s an SE) was reflecting the sun into my eyes earlier. Gah.
