Slight knock coming from the rear...

My MOT came back with the advisory "corrosion to rear suspension cups" Perhaps I ought not to ignore it...

    Tds wagon in the states

When I had a Passat I saw on an Amercian Passat forum that some bloke in the States had uncovered a 1998 1.9 tdi saloon. They wet themselves over it even though it was an extremely ropey example! Although we mock that it's too much, I bet if a rarity came over here that we never had (524 td perhaps?) that we would get our knickers in a twist with excitement!

    e34s

I love mine, but there are a lot of issues that need sorting, and I don't have the time to do it myself, or the funds to pay somebody to do it! Hopefully will change soon...

    Biting Point

Ah mine does this too. Lower bite and associated dip in revs if clutch lifted slowly, but high bite if clutch brought up normally. Thanks for the info guys, you might have saved me some money!

    Do you wave?

What with fewer E34s on the road now, if I see another I tend to wave or give a thumbs up. Unfortunately I must give off loser vibes because I never get a wave back! Do you guys wave to other E34s or is it not the done thing yet and we've got to wait another 10 years I did however have a guy in a petrol station compliment it which made my day

    34ers 2014 car plans

I had a rather nice letter from work at Christmas, so plans for mine include just fixing it really! I'd like to solve the shimmy once and for all (seems to be coming from the back - subframe bushes?), change the wheels back to OEM, propshaft doughnut is bollocksed so change that, while that's out change the clutch, and hopefully sort the gearbox. I cannot get the bloody fill plug off it!! The list goes on... as well as the above, change the thermostat and water pump, replace the steering wheel, pollen filter, and give her a good service. The thing is the body and underside are sooo good, and I know that if I sold it, I would regret it as I can tell these cars were built properly. Mine was just neglected before I bought it. Once everything is fixed, I do fancy some OEM+ upgrades, perhaps a leather interior for a start...

    No oil tag on Gearbox!

Hi guys, got the car in the air today to check the oil required for a gearbox oil change in the very near future, and lo and behold there was no coloured tag or sticker! I'm unsure whether that means I need a specific oil due to lack of tag, or it has fallen off at some point. will Realoem tell me my required oil if I enter my VIN? Is there any way to find out? Is it most likely to be Dextron III? Also, I noticed what I thought were two fill plugs, one on the nearside of the gearbox IIRC had a hex head, the one on the offside had a square head. Can anyone confirm if they are both fill plugs, or undoing the wrong one will unleash hell (I have a habit of breaking things somehow) Thanks in advance. On another note it's a sad day for me because I have just sold my first ever car, a Triumph 2000 mk2 .

    No oil tag on Gearbox!

Oh that's ok, you went by the information presented, which is only fair. Now I own an E34 that needs a few things doing I certainly don't want to be annoying people haha! Ok, I'll try and crack the plug a bit and see what's what. Thanks for your help, it does ease my mind a bit that it most likely is ATF, so at least I can get some knowing that it will most likely be that.

    No oil tag on Gearbox!

I'm really sorry, I was referring to myself as the pillock for not mentioning it was a manual, not you! Yes you reached a fair conclusion, and gave good advice - it was my own fault. I had heard that some manuals used ATF, hence mentioning Dexron III. Yes quite right I could drop some, but I would hate to drop too much and be left without a car to take to get some more! haha! I didn't know if not having a tag on the gearbox signified anything. Sorry again for the confusion, and thanks for your help. Alex

    No oil tag on Gearbox!

Top marks for being a complete pillock to me! The car has a manual box - just realised I didn't actually include that rather critical bit of information! Sorry pounding headache! But yes it is an M50 vanos.

Hello, and bit of a problem...

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and 2 weeks ago bought myself a 1995 BMW 520i. It's really a lovely car, excellent body, engine sounds sweet etc. However, I was called to Cornwall (I live in South Wilts) and due to the nature of the call it was a rather hurried drive. However, on returning whenever I accelerate I get a whining noise which is rev dependent rather than road speed dependent. I'm worried this is the gearbox as knocking it into neutral and revving the engine does not produce the whine, and it doesn't sound like a viscous fan roar. Having said this I'm rather hoping it might be an easy fix! if you need any more information let me know, I'm just confused as to what it might be, and welcome all ideas. Cheers, Alex
