Hey guys. Finally pulled my finger out and wrote up a little document about how I cut open and replaced the angel eyes.... http://deviant.cyberdeath.org/E60%20(pre-LCI%20halogen)%20LED%20Angel%20Eye%20Upgrade.pdf Let me know your thoughts. Chris.

Working on the write-up. Lots of photos to wade through. Cutting it wasn't complicated. I used a feintool (oscillating tool) (http://www.popularmechanics.com/cm/popularmechanics/images/Kw/oscillating-tools-04-0813-lgn.jpg). Started with a dremel, but it was melting the plastic. Sealing was a piece of cake to be honest. A carefully placed bead of silicone sealant all around, pressed the lens on hard, then taped it up firm, and hey presto, it was holding tight enough to fit, some 6 hours later. It was a weekend job, and fairly straightforward for the practically-minded. I'm still keen to hear from somebody who can suggest what wire I can tap into with the remote Accessory wire coming off the LED harness though... my little little hurdle!

Hey guys, I've gone ahead and completely cut open my pre-LCI halogen headlights and replaced the rings with aftermarket LED ones... and they look great! I'll post some pics (and a DIY of sorts) later, but for now, I've got one last wiring job to do: can anyone suggest a power feed in the engine bay that I can tap a wire into, to power my angel eyes whenever the key is in the Accessory position, rather than having to turn the lights to the On position? I thought about looking for the radio's power source, but that most likely means running a wire through the firewall, which I'm not so keen on. I had also thought I could tap into the feed for the orange eyebrows, but they're only on whenever the lights are on, and not simply when the key is turned. What else in the engine bay is getting current whenever the key is in the Accessory position?...

Sweet, just as I'd hoped. An alternative to your link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-DRL-Daytime-Running-Lights-Relay-Harness-Control-ON-OFF-Switch-Controller-/191093026700?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c7e082f8c DRL harness for a fiver.

Hmm, thanks mate! What about the issue of our batteries being located in the boot though? Could I wire this to the positive terminal in the engine bay and the negative bolt on the passenger side strut?

Yeah, I don't believe using any connection DRL-related is going to work, because, like 530dE60 says, those are the low beams, which can be controlled through the iDrive menu. I really need to connect to something completely separate, like a feed for the radio etc...

Hey guys... I have a question regarding wiring of new LED rings. I've found a set that fits E60 pre-halogen lights, and I'm not afraid of cutting open the headlights and putting in the rings then re-sealing them up again (in fact I plan to write up a DIY on it), but I wonder where best to wire them to? I don't want to have to remember to turn my park lights on and off every time I drive the car (as it is now, if I want just the angel eyes to operate), but rather have them go on when I turn the ignition to the On position. ie. in the same way as the radio gets its power. Can anybody suggest a suitable wiring point for this? Cheers.

Haha, ok. I look forward to the storm then. In other news, I'm still keen on cutting open my headlights and installing aftermarket LED rings. I've found a guy in Ireland who's organised with Chinese manufacturing company to make a complete replacement set of halos for the E60 (ie. small full circle inner ring, larger half-circle outer ring) using the latest tech COB LEDs (rather than SMD) with 150+ LEDs per ring. Should look as good as CCFL but loads brighter. We shall see... (I guess I'll just have to put up with flicking the switch to position 1, coz it's not worth a couple-hundred quid on a new LM2 module just to code these as DRLs!)

Hmm, it seems that after running for 6 months, this thread has finally gone quiet! In regards to coding the angel eyes as DRLs, does anybody know how to do this? Would be much nicer than always having to flick the light switch to position 1, then remembering to turn it off again when leaving the car. I found this thread - http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1621740-Angel-eye-DRL-s-on-the-E60 - which suggests that I'll need an LM2 module? If so, well, that just sucks....

Yeah trying to search for alternatives at the moment. But I'm not sure of the diameters of the pre-LCI E60 halogen halos... any ideas? My car's not handy at the moment (actually, just yesterday I put it on the RORO ferry from Italy to New Zealand), but I think the inner and outer rings are different sizes?

I totally agree. But is there a happy compromise between the eBay options with possible iffy quality and the high quality V4s?

I'm currently reading up on cutting open the headlights. A dremel would probably be the best way to create a clean cut I reckon. Then simply use a 2-part epoxy to re-glue. Although I don't know how this Kraut opened his using the heatgun/chisel method without cracking them!... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9itQRr8ks9I Does anybody know the ring dimensions for the E60? For instance, would it be possible to remove the existing E60 rings and fit something like these? http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-2x-White-100mm-Angel-Eyes-105-leds-SMD-Car-BMW-Style-Halo-Ring-Light-G072-/161162149664?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2586033f20 (which, incidentally, seem pretty good, with SMD 117 LEDs per ring) or these: http://store.ijdmtoy.com/Retrofit-Headlight-Angel-Eyes-COB-LED-Halo-Rings-p/sku-121.htm. I'm just loathe to drop 250-quid on some Orion V4s.

Damn. I wonder if the other ones (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SILVER-ERROR-FREE-CANBUS-501-W5W-T10-LED-SIDE-LIGHT-BULB-BMW-VW-AUDI-S3-X5-E60-/290726190967?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43b0a19f77) would be any better then?...

Or what about these bad boys? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220848926764?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 Although, I emailed the seller, and he said they were only 30 lumens (?!). Compare that to my previous link where they advertise themselves as 300!...

Hi mate... the only headlight upgrade I did (other than wet-sanding and polishing the lenses!) was to install the 501 error-free LED wedges. But they're a bit rubbish to be honest. I had a bit of a hunt around for what solution Funknhell ended up using (I'm assuming he's got pre-LCI halogens like myself?) but couldn't really find it. Did he end up using these?... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SILVER-ERROR-FREE-CANBUS-501-W5W-T10-LED-SIDE-LIGHT-BULB-BMW-VW-AUDI-S3-X5-E60-/290726190967?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43b0a19f77 I'm tempted to have a go with the brown cones. But ultimately I think the entire halo ring needs swapping out for a true F10 super bright halo effect no?
