    m535i power steering leak

Hi everyone Power steering on my 1986 e28 m535i is on the blink. The belt is loose, which should be an easy fix. But there is also evidence of ps fluid leaking inside the engine bay. Obviously the pipes are all very old and no doubt some have perished. Are there any obvious items to consider replacing? thanks Ed

OK, I'll give them a call. Done some Googling and there's Pirtek centre just down the road from me!

    m535i power steering leak

OK guys - an update. A new belt has largely solved the problem, but there is evidence of PAS fluid seeping out from a number of hose unions, hence the low fluid levels. My man at the garage advises acquiring a length of OEM hose and some jubilee clips to replace the OEM hose clamps, then we'll renew the bits that seem to be leaking the most. 2 - questions: 1 - OEM 12 x18mm hose costs a bloody fortune - £40 on eBay for a short length from Lithuania! Any better ideas? Pirtek hoses are all imperial sizes 2 - will correctly sized jubilee clips (13-20mm version) do the job, or does it need to be the spec expensive OEM hose clamps?

    Clutch problem M535i

Gents Just got her out of winter storage, had her serviced and took her for a drive. I've noticed that the clutch pedal has significantly reduced travel and now only releases the clutch an inch or so before the pedal is fully depressed. When released the clutch pedal sits 2 inches or so below the brake pedal, which I'm sure wasn't the case before. There's no sign of any fluid leak. Pedal box issue? Faulty master cylinder? Any guidance gratefully received, as ever Ed
  6. Gents, a couple of e28 conundrums for you: 1 - the old girl is making quite a noticeable tappety noise coming from the top of the engine (e28 M535i m30). It's not there all the time. Valve clearance where checked about 6 months ago. Do I? - check clearances again? - I've heard mention of changing oil grade as a solution to this well known problem - could some sort of oil additive help? apologies if there's already a thread on this ... 2 - rear output seal of 5 speed box is leaking so I"m going to change it. I'll change the rubber doughnut that connects to the drive shaft whilst I'm at it. However I can't find a part number of Real OEM. Does anyone have one and can you tell me where best to get this part? thanks all
  7. Yes, definitely the output seal - I've had the car up on a ramp and you can see the leak coming from the seal. It's only a small leak mind. Other than that, the gearbox is doing very well and like you said, it's transformed the car. How's the M6 project?
  8. Gents I acquired the bits needed to do this from Wattsmonkey last year and the time has come to finally convert the old girl over from auto. Question is .... I live in Shropshire. Are there any BMW specialist in the Midlands who will do a good job for reasonable price? Presumably it's sensible to get new clutch and cylinder fitted as well? Which parts would we worth getting on to ebay? (car has only done 42k some auto box is in excellent condition and all works perfectly)? thanks in advance Ed
  9. Thanks guys Sir Anthony - I'll PM you
  10. gents I've located an e12 front windscreen near to where I live for not much cost. 2 questions: - will it fit my e28? - it looks like a bronze tint from the picture, and the glass markings are on attached photo. Can you tell conclusively from the markings if it's a bronze tint? thanks

    Fitting chip to M30 engine

Hi Everyone I've bought a chip from Fritz bits for my m535i and haven't yet got round to fitting it. Is is possible to do this DIY or does it need a specialist? If DIY isn't advisable, if there anyone in Shropshire/West Midlands who could do the job? Richard at Fritz mentioned that there are a couple of ECU designs and you might need to rewire the pins depending on which version you have. thanks Ed
  12. Gents She's got 225/50/16 on rear style 5s and 205/55/16 on front, for that staggered look. Front tyres now need replacing as they are low on tread and both over 10 years old. However I've always thought they look a bit small in the wheel arches compared to the rears which look about right. What other front tyre choices might there be, and does specific make of tyre matter? thanks Ed
  13. Thanks - very comprehensive replies. I've ordered the same size of tyre again. Rob - I like your idea of DIY staggered. Genius!

    Replacement e28 windscreen

I've cracked the windscreen and it won't get through an MOT now. It's a bronze tint, and I've identified an e12 one on eBay. I'm told e12 and e28 are the same part number, but were e12's fitted with bronze tint? If not, does anyone know of a likely source of replacement windscreens out there? Also, should I replace the rubber gasket as well? The existing one seems fine with no visible sign of damage. Finally, does anyone know of a good mobile fitter in West Midlands/Shropshire area who can fit an old windscreen like this?
  15. Sill and a few other bits need fettling. Can anyone recommend somewhere good in or near Berkshire
  16. Hi everyone A 5 inch crack has appeared in a corner of my m535i front windscreen. Bu**er. - nothing has hit the windscreen whilst driving so could this has been caused my body flex? If so would fitting a strut brace help? - I think this is an Mot failure so how do I bet get hold of a replacement? I'm assuming all e28 windscreens are the same so no need to get one of an m535i? - best places to get it fitted near Berkshire? - worth fitting new rubber seal and if so cheapest place to get one? Thanks Ed

    Cracked windscreen on m535i

thanks gents excess on my policy for windscreen is £90 if I use their repairer or £150 if I use a non approved one, so I'm considering whether to claim or not ... how much would a second hand screen cost and where could I get one from, or is it worht getting a new OEM one also, how do I tell if I have green or bronze tinted windows? Either way I'll ensure a new seal is fitting - good advice
  18. The plastic on my rear nearside yellow indicator lens is cracked. Is it possible to replace just the plastic bit or do I have to replace the entire unit? thanks Ed
  19. Hi Everyone I've got a Fritz stainless exhaust and manifold sat in my garage and it's time to get it fitted. Is there anywhere you can recommend who will do a good job in Berkshire. KiwkFit isn't on my shortlist. Also, how many hours labour would it take? thanks
  20. Right, I'll crack on with penetrating oil and wire brush and will book her in to MJF engineering. Thanks for the advice. Here's a picture of her, by the way, recently returned from a visit to Owlsbury and now rust free
  21. Morning all I've got my hands on a set of H&R lowering springs for mt m535i and am now looking to order some Bilsteins shocks. The consensus on other forums seems to be that B8's will provide the right fit as they are shorter than B6s - any thoughts on this? Also, I need to double check part numbers before taking the leap on German ebay (which seems to be the cheapest option) Splondike provided the following part numbers previous post: Part no.s for B6s - FRONT P36-0233 , REAR B46-0608 Part no.s for B8s - FRONT P36-0243-H2 , REAR B46-0607-H0 However, these numbers don't seem to match up with the ones on the BIlstein website, which just to confuse things, doesn't list B8 for the rear. 34-181546 Stoßdämpfer BILSTEIN - B8 SPRINT Einbauort Vorderachse; Federbeineinsatz; Einrohr-Upside-Down; 1 17900 EUR/Stück (exkl. Mwst) 24-007276 Stoßdämpfer BILSTEIN - B6 SPORT Einbauort Hinterachse; federtragender Dämpfer; Gasdruck; Einrohr; unten Auge; oben Stift; Kenngröße 270/100; Also, does an m535i need different B6s or B8s to an e28 with a smaller engine. help!! E28 front springs

thanks Dan, yes I ordered through ECP and then got an email saying they couldn't fulfill the order. I rang and they said it would be another 90 quid on top of the £150. Anyway, I've ordered some through DC Performance for £194. I'm looking forward to getting the car sitting a bit lower. all well with your project?

    E28 front springs

I don't know the answer to your question I'm afraid, but how much lower is your m535i compared to m-tech springs (assuming m-techs were fitted in the first place). I'm looking to lower my m535i. thanks Ed

    E28 H&R spring kits for £142 delivered

That's a top tip Dan However does anyone know if these springs will lower my M535i? (which I believe is already a bit lower than the non M models)?)
  25. Hi Everyone Just thought I'd share a couple of pictures of my recently aquired 1986 e28 M535i. She is completely original, with only 50k miles (and all the docs to prove it), full main dealer service history and one owner from knew who is a family friend, so I know the history of the car well. This is my first e28, so I'd be grateful for some advice: 1 - Wheels. She has unmarked original bottle tops style alloys with almost new TRXs on the rear and half worn ones on the front. Given how crap I hear these tyres are I'm in the market for some decent replacement alloys that fit. I've read a few posts on this subject and it seem that the sensible option is BMW style 5s off later models. Ideally I'd like alloys like the e28 M5 - 16" if I recall correctly. Also, I'd like a slightly staggered look too but can't afford the huge prices of alpina/bbs of the period. What do you recommend? And is there a market for the original wheels? And how much will the handling improve with modern tyres? 2 - Rust. There's a but of surface rust under one corner of the boot seal but I can't see anything else: - where should I be checking to see if I can spot any other hidden rust? - is it worth replacing the boot seal? And which other seals are worth checking too? - I'm going to try my best to preserve her for future generation so what's the best way of protecting the car from rusting in the future and can you recommend anyone to do this work who covers Berkshire? - there are a few stone chips so I'd like to get her paint work 3 - I've sourced some some replacement seat covers for the worn driver's bolster and intend to do this work myself. Is there a thread on this forum with instructions on how to replace seat covers? 4 - Rear exhaust box is starting to rust (but will probably last a few years left). Is it possible to get hold of a second hand stainless box? 5 - The silver plastic surround to the front and rear windscreen has degraded and the silver bits are all crazed. Where can I get replacement and is replacing a DIY job or would I need a professional windscreen fitter? 6 - it has the original hairy mats but the driver one is worn. Is it possible to source OEM replacements? 7 - Anything else you recommend to future-proof or care for this car? (brake upgrades etc?) thanks in advance
