  1. I've been quiet of late on the E34 front as i've A) been very stupid or B ) made a good move! Sold my much loved 6 speed M5 last summer. To fund a new E34 project i was offered And bought this touring? Its a LHD avus blue 525i or so it was when it left the factory Take one very crashed/written of Alpina Bi turbo #389 and fit all of its mechanicals into said car above, Its not finished and this all started over 9 years ago. That where i come in like a mug. Now i've had this since september just gone and the main stumbling block is the electrics as its a hybrid of M50 M30. No tourings had M30s from factory let alone with two turbos!! Alot of it is plug and play but........there are some differences. So thats my first goal is to get the electrics working as it all should and then sort the mechanicals. Getting the engine to crank over would be a huge start!! I'm in need of a body control module as the one i have had died over winter. I've firstly been getting all the cars normal features to work, so lights, wipers etc. Indicators is proving a problem Anyhow my main question is this can anyone tell me the type name of this plug on the body loom is? Like X26 etc Locates in the drivers footwell on LHD but these plugs on RHD cars are behind the glovebox. Its the white ones that are the problem, one side i have two plugs (M30) and the cars (M50) body loom has 1 plug and to help they are both different sizes. This can be sorted but i need to identify the plug type so i can check wiring diagrams from both cars and see what needs to bee connected and what won't be. Any help on this is gratefully recieved. This is wholly into the unknown and not many people have put an M30 into tourings over the years let alone a smashed up bi turbo. Right now i miss the M5 more than ever as it worked! Its gone now so i need to re motivate on this pile of bits/shit.

    i'm not 100% sure i want it like that. I've got an E30 like that and then you feel you can't use it. We'll see i'd rather drive it and park in tescos and no worry Its ok from 10 foot

    Yes i picked her up yesterday its all taxed and MOT'd road legal! It sat for a week or two as they were so swamped with other work So it ended up going to their bodyshop to sort the sills out These were the two front repairs needed on the sills Also some repairs on the rear of sills And re stone chipped the paint. So at least now thats all the grot removed, as although the bodywork is tatty its not a rusty pig the shell This Marks a nice chap, he got the engine running a year ago, so he was back on it this time. They've fixed the EML light not coming on so that has allowed full boost! this was some wiring into the cluster that need completing. The wiring was there. Also ABS light was on permanently, i think this was an incorrect relay. OBC is still dead, this is suspected the unit is faulty. I've got some spares in english from American cars but they are different. Reverse lights is some wiring in the tailgate suspected as only 4volts there but its not needed for MOT believe it or not. they've also wired in the ASC traction plug. The loom was there as part of the EML system So added the plug loom into it and this is working but not. ABS is working correctly and so is ASC when engine fires up. You can press switch and turn it off. once driving however over say 10mph the ASC light comes on and wont go off. ABS still works correctly. So basically i've run out of money as the welding spiralled and nothing every goes perfect! So will have to save and send back. Theres a hunch its my clocks which are a mismatch that needs sorting. Cruise control is working, that was just a missing clutch switch, I'd never ran a spec check on the base car but Barry ran it through and it was a very well optioned 525i touring! Avus blue - special order as was an M5/3 colour only manual LSD heated sport leather air con twin sunroofs OBC cruise control A fine e34 in its own right I took it for a spin when i arrived yesterday and its an fucking animal! No lie, fastest car i've ever owned. A slight tickle on 2nd on the way out had the back swinging no sweat, i caught the slide fine but wasn't quite expecting that! It must be the lightly tweeked turbos as it gets to full boost at about 1800rpm and they come in quite hard. The standard bi turbos are more linear and come in about 3500RPM. I've not driven a standard one to compare but Barry has and mine feels alot stronger. Its cold and the tyres are new but old if you get me but when the boost comes in snakes in 2nd 3rd no problem. Its going to be fun learning to drive the hot rod as it needs a bit of respect! When the rolling roads open i'll have to visit Charlie and get it on there see how the fueling is. In the meantime try and not thrash it everywhere and damage it. I just need to save some more money to keep going through it. I think this will be the biggest turning point in this project. Very chuffed and thanks to all those that have helped along the way so far

    its at the bodyshop have the sills repaired welded, should be back from there soon and is ready MOT then, BMR have sorted a few electrical issues. I can't wait!

    Drove her to BMR today, 51 miles no sweat. I'll be honest i was shitting it leading up to this drive with what ifs. I'm a bit silly with no breakdown cover either but i avoided the M3 "smart" motorway as if i did breakdown i didn't fancy dying and my car being written off on one of our new safer hard shoulder free motorways. I needn't of worried it behaved perfectly and sat on the motorway with ease. So first test passed with flying colours, well chuffed as it was a heap of parts 18 months ago So at Barrys for an MOT and to sort the EML wiring which is the fly by wire throttle so it boosts fully, being main jobs. I could feel it wants to really fly but the throttle butterfly only opens about a 3rd. I'm not keen on the short shift gear lever (E60 545i) its got fitted so that may have to go and buy a standard throw lever. I've forgotten the looong gearing aswell. 70mph in 5th? 1500rpm sir

    Yes and some of it is NLA like the levelling valve on the back that you adjust the rear ride height with is, pipework is. I've deleted mine as a load of it was missing. This is fairly tricky as you need non SLS PAS pump ideally theres only one type of SLS shock listed now brand new its the same for 525i touring to a Bi turbo saloon and everything imbertween 535s M5s 540s etc its all the same part number I don't know why i'm bothering after your toys out the pram moment the other week Kevin. All the bilstein stuff is non adjust. KV only make variant 1s now for e34s which is ride height adjustment only and you need to send 2 front struts off for them to build you a set. The rest of the coilover market is cheaper budget stuff. H&R make spring kits for the M5 that is for SLS cars. 540i also. Pretty sure Eibach still do aswell. Good E34 suspension stuff is limited now compared to a few years ago as i guess the market is tiny as the cars have died off

    Merry Christmas All how ever yours planned out. Boris tier 4'd ma ass so being off work and no where to go what do you do? Get E34ing a few jobs had built up to do and some house DIY forced a break and much happyness sanity for my wife. I needed the break as well a bit to renew the enthusiasm First job was to get these gearboxes swapped, great job on axle stands Took me about 7 hours, it wouldn't come off the bloody thing. In the end i made this bodge puller which popped it off The pilot bearing had come out the back of the crank! My thesis is in my sheer excitement last time when i fitted this i cleaned up the splines so the clutch disc moved freely and for got about the end of the input shaft. The bearing didn't really want to fit it. This also explains my other faux pas when i fitted it and the box slid on nicely but for the last 10-15mm. This was it then, so i eased it on with the bolts. Which you shouldn't do. Silly boy Things should be easier with this one!! A shot of the pair as, well you won't see 2 of these next to each other for a while. Bloody things. So fill the new one with oil and move all the bits over to this box ready to fit I fitted a new pilot bearing just in case, the old one felt fine. The advice of my car friends via whatsapp who know more than me suggested this. Again to stop excitement of just getting it all back together! Worlds heaviest dual mass. I didn't weigh it but it must be getting on for 20kgs, its a beast. There was a reason why Alpina deliberately fitted it which i can't remember now. It might be to help save the gearbox With a wiggle the new box just slid straight up, happy days so as you do on a rainy 23rd of December you crack on. I got it to the stage where crimbo eve i just needed to get the exhaust on. So prop shaft heat shields the rest all in place Another boo boo, i fucked the clutch slave. Again not thinking straight. The brakes needed a re bleed from originally as they felt like a bit of air was in them. So rather than do this job first with the gearbox on i tried it with the eazi bleed and the gearbox off. BANG! the pressure shot the rod out the clutch slave cylinder as it shares the hydraulic system with the brakes. Like all cars now. So i had this old new genuine slave from my old 6 speed M5 i never fitted to it, but the thread on it is bigger on the slave housing. So i had to make a custom little pipe with a normal M10 thread one end and M12 on the other and just see how it works feels to the 535i one exhaust back on, and a re bleed of the brakes. I got a fair bit of air out of brakes and new clutch slave and fire her up wowsers, gearbox is ultra quiet it didn't want to select reverse at first. Which had me very worried and pissed. Then a bit of working the box around the gate on axle stands with the engine running going through the forward gears seemed to get it all going. The brakes now feel spot on and strong and the box is dead quiet so thats transformed the car now, very excited. It needs a plate welding on the front passenger floor pan and its ready for an MOT. So fairy desperate for this now but i can't weld and Boris has tier 4'd my area before crimbo so we shall see There's been more to crack on with as there always is but even i can see the light at the end of the tunnel now. A big set of 11's to be laid up the road soon!

    People rejoice! The wait is over I got this teaser picture last week, bar any hicups its ready to roll! Turns out there was one. it uses funny size oil seals, but we aren't surprised by this by one bit by now Yesterday came so i fuelled the E30 up for the long trip about 180 miles each way. Give her a good run up the M1 You beauty, I'm glad i didn't grizzle too much but if you saw Neils workshop hes flat out and my gearbox wasn't very straight forwards. A fair few little parts replaced. I asked how did you get the rust out? He polished it all off by hand every part. So very laborious. I think hes undercharged me but he is happy its now as good as it can possibly be as nearly all of the gears etc can't be bought. He doesn't want another like that to sort out! I learnt yesterday just because in this instance several cars use a Getrag 290 they aren't really similar inside. He had another 290 off an early 90s Jag and its almost completely different inside and hardly any parts interchange, The gears on this Bi turbo box are much bigger stronger as is the whole box really to deal with the torque So if anyone fancys coming round to get the other gearbox out and this one in i'd like that! It will be 99% ready for an MOT now i hope And for your gearbox needs Neil at All gears in Worksop. Hes got a facebook page. 6 speed BMW boxes? Hes the man to ask

    more progress, some forwards, some backwards but onwards!! My new clutch hose on and slave, rather said original clutch hose Easy bleed on the brakes and clutch went ok no dramas. So Pedals back My centre caps had no locks so i got a new kit, with 4 keys!! Even the gearnob has needed a skilled hand! The plastic insert that hold it to the selector arm was missing. So i got an old knob from the scrappy and my old man machined it down to fit. I had an original for him to copy that had fallen off my new Alpina knob i bought for my E30. refit the starter, can't see much? Tosser of a job the top bolt you can't see so its all feel. Or take the inlet manifold off - no thanks! Exhaust time, these are beast heavy on an e34. The tailpipes are large and the bumper needs a bit of tickling to help New oil and filter, found a bit of rubber from an old filter in there, not good. Also battery back on, coolant topped back up. Cranked engine over to build oil pressure up until the light goes out. Fuel pump fuse back in and broom! Had an oil leak where i hadn't tightened one of the turbo oil feed nuts. Everything else seems ok leakwise or funny noises, heater bled up nicely Off the axle stands numberplates on and moving under its own steam! Alas its not all plain sailing. The gearbox isn't happy. Theres a theme here, not sure what it is but it whines under load, selects gears ok. So i went for a little drive So yes noise not going away. A fucking pain as its a grizzly job on the drive taking the box on off. I shall get on the phone tomorrow and ring the guy with my original box see if its anywhere near finished seeing as hes had it since May now. Still more jobs to do but its mobile so i can move it about the drive as i've got a wife whos demanding some DIY on the house now!
