Stunning, probably the most pampered land barge in the UK !

Great thread and good to see another car getting the attention it deserves.  I think I prefer the look on the 18s. Must be a difference in ride quality ?

You mean the smoke from all the oil getting past the valve stem oil seals with all that idling ?

No surprise there,  even if it is isn't as good as the brand name stuff you wouldn't know about it until your engine has done 100k+ miles at least.  So in other words, why not use it !
Where I think lower cost oil like this makes sense is that if you're on a budget it enables you to change it more frequently than if you use expensive premium stuff.  And to me that is a better way to go.

The specialist can advise, but just because the outside looks fine doesn't mean the inside is as well. Having said that, my 2004 E60 was still on it's original radiator late last year when I sold it.

Pretty irrelevant what brand the BMW dealers use, it is just a commercial deal.

In my old M50 non-vanos 320 I used to use Fuchs 5w-40 full synthetic, and that had done close to 200k miles when I got rid of it. Engine was still sweet and used no oil that you could see on the dipstick. I had used Mobil 1 0w-40 a lot in earlier years but moved to the Fuchs mainly because of cost.

I'd like to thank everyone for their interest in the car,  it is very much appreciated. Dan can indeed store my car for a very reasonable price, so I've decided to do exactly that. It keeps my options open without costing me a fortune. Thanks Dan ! And once again shows what a fantastic forum this is.

Yep I have an earlier A70, brilliant phone and at the time with a Samsung cash-back plus £100 trade-in for an old worthless android phone, a total bargain to boot. The A71 is even better, I fail to see the need to spend any more on a phone.

My Pagid disks and pads are quiet although they didn't used to be.  Even genuine BMW pads can squeal, I had that on my E36 with genuine disks and pads.

Yes, suspension work is so expensive. The parts aren't cheap and there can be lots of labour involved as well. If you're in the south-east that adds up really fast.

Looks superb, massive respect for all the work you've done on this. True enthusiast. If it was my car it wouldn't be quite that low, but that is very much personal taste.

I have a 2004 530i and I've owned it for 7 years now. Bought at 104k miles and now 146k. Things that I've had to have done that I remember::

    Engine
    - rocker cover gasket and oil filter housing gaskets replaced (leaks)
    - vanos recondition - seals and anti-rattle kit and some sprockets (timing chain tensioner replaced as part of the job)
    - DISA valve
    - CCV valve pipes etc
    - all six coil packs replaced

    cooling system
    - water pump replaced twice
    - a couple of hoses and a sensor
    - thermostat by a previous owner
    - radiator is original and in good shape

    electrics
    - iDrive reboot problem, which I've never bothered to have fixed.
    - IBS sensor failed and replaced
    - new battery

    suspension
    - most of the front suspension replaced - 4 x arms, shocks, top mounts, drop link, anti-roll bar link, tie rods etc
    - rear suspension, surprising nothing except for one bush at last MOT

    miscellaneous
    - headlights professionally cleaned and polished
    - brake discs and pads all round
    - regular coolant and brake fluid changes
    - annul oil change of course

Auto box had an oil change, new sump and sleeve just after I bought it, is otherwise original and still fine.

To be honest, today I would not recommend anyone to buy at E60 that old. Your maintenance costs are going to be high. Only if you can do work yourself would I even think about it. I only do less than 2k miles a year now, maybe only 1k this year.  As for mine at this age and mileage, the engine is sweet, uses virtually no oil and I'm confident it would do another 150k. Auto box is fine although I do believe you are on borrowed time at this mileage. Drives nice and tight. Airconditioning is a little noisy after it has been running a while, I suspect a noisy compressor but it keeps on going. To summarise, if you find a really good one and you are capable of doing work yourself then maybe go for it. Otherwise look for something else.

New MOT now with no advisories

Total bill for MOT,  Aircon re-gas, front lower suspension arm,  rear suspension bush, stripping and adjusting rear brakes, all up £650. Not bad at all especially greater London prices which a lot of you seem to forget. I've had a reasonable run the last couple of years so I guess I was due something. Really nice to have the aircon working again too !

    The original failures were
"Do not drive until repaired, (dangerous defects)" on the front suspension arm
"Repair immediately (major defect)" for the rear bush

Emissions were incredibly low, very satisfying on that front. For example, HC was measured as 2 against the limit of 200. Can't do much better than that !

Edit: Oh yeah, he said he rarely sees any E60s these days. it is the newer models he sees now. I guess E60s are disappearing off the road due to failing transmissions, large repairs bills etc. Touch wood my transmission is just fine at the moment.

Same location yes, same MOT tester unknown, but I've been using this garage for the last 10+ years and the owner is totally trustworthy.

Yes I have a pre-booked appointment and have printed that off just in case. Of course it is still taxed and insured. It was just that I was away for a month and didn't have time to get it done before I left, and indeed in the week since I got back. it isn't a normal situation for me.

Emissions have always been nice and low, I'm not expecting any issue there, but I did get an advisory last year on one of the suspension arms. I suspect it was a very very early advisory and have only done 2k miles in the last year so hopefully it will juts be an advisory again, or perhaps with a different tester not at all. Will see !
