well after lots of hard work the car made it to track on the 24th feb for a test day. was very pleased with its first outing but it did highlight a few more little problems, that will be easily fixed (knackered clutch in one engine for starters) but overall its a serious grin factor machine, handles well, easy to drive and in a word bloody fast. will be upgrading various parts as i go to improve the car. new front subframe and wishbone set up planned to make it fully rose jointed, re position rear shocks ( doing this next week) new throttle set up and convert gear linkage to cable instead of rod and rose joints. oh and repaint the doors as numbers not to the rule book but then it was painted in a hurry due to the cold weather we had of late. pics before paint of few items remote button on steering wheel to clear visor roll off at the track the boot

so much for the car being ready to race as per the advert . on inspection i found a number of parts that are worn out or no good so over last few weeks been busy sorting the problems with the car. one engine had a cracked sump so this has been replaced. than had to sort drive train as chains where seized and rusty, enter very quick learning curve regards chains and sprockets as no experiance with bikes. replaced throttle cables as one was snapped and other had seen better days had to also replace both rear wheel bearings, drive shaft cv joints inner and outer and one shaft end spline as nut had rounded the thread off. got two new chains and having to have two sprockets made as the drive system from the engine is made up of a cup that fits over a 530 chain 14 toothed sprocket, the cup has a 30mm centre bore with a cut down old drive shaft welded into it, this then passes through a pillow block bearing which bolts to the rear roll cage to keep it in place with the custom sprocket after the bearing which has 11 teeth and a 30mm centre bore to fit over shaft.to take a 630 chain (biggest you can get for a bike) got to wait 2 weeks for these new sprockets to arrive then remake the drive shafts. while in there have also given the engines a full service and checked all nuts and bolts to rear as found some loose ones that needed nylock nuts fitting. all in all will be happy that the car should last more than half a lap now when rebuilt as all drive train will be new. only downside is never realised how much motor bike stuff cost before bought this car. shopping bill so far engine oil 8 ltrs (hi rev 10/40 semi motor bike oil) + 2 oil filters £70 spark plugs x 8 irridium (takes deep breath) £10 each = £80 wheel bearings x 2 £50 drive shaft splined end £33 (pair) drive shaft cv joints x4 £68 one of chain sprockets x 2 £50 chains 630 pitch D.I.D o ring gold x2 £320 throttle cable and ends £20 air filter cleaner and oil £20 (huge filters) so all in all nearly £700 lighter and not even driven the car yet but still happy as got the car cheap and to build one would cost twice what i have paid out so far. next week will be checking the front over all i have to do now is explain to the mrs why the race car has lots shiney new parts and our caravan is still missing a new awning! and to why i sold the bmw that needed nothing more than a touch up here and there as never missed a beat all last season

its 2wd as in fixed like a go cart. has chain from engine to the axle, all be it very heavy duty chain. you start each engine on its own but gear lever set up engages both at same time so have constant drive from both engines more modern versions have an elaborate drive box so also have reverse but as you can guess they are not cheap. will get better pics after xmas to show engines etc and whats under bonnet or not as case may be.

my championship winning e34 535 is now with a new owner as due to my mid life crisis i wanted more power for next season. i've gone down the route of small light and always sideways and jumped in at the deep end and bought a class 7 autograss car. needs some tiding and small improvements but basically ready to race. its a pug 106 with 2x zx9r engines mounted in the rear, car weighs 600kg and is running 350 bhp so all together around 500bhp per tonne which should be lively to say the least. first job is to sort throttle as its a bodge job, relocate steering as to close for me, service engines and tidy wiring up, steep learning curve as i know nothing regards motor bike engines. except sounds the nuts and revs like a biatch. comments and questions welcome

E36 328 Kumho Race Car - Pre Season Mods

i have a friend who races in the bmw championship (e30 and e36). the top boys spend mega money, my friend owns a engineering company and they have found ways round the strict rules. he has valved shocks for different tracks but all made by gaz and different spring rates. different engines for different tracks also. it is standard honest guv lol. (not) my brother is in the process of building his e30 for this championship and got as far as shell and roll cage. its been fully strengthened and seam welded with multi point cage. that cost him 2.5k apart from tyres nothing on the car is untouched and the top guys basically have very deep pockets so cheat more as they know what rounds engines get checked, when to back off a little etc etc. but if face fits at top it not matter. . but keep up the good work and enjoy your racing, thing that put me of this championship is the £150 meeting entry fee on top of travelling, and one round in europe.

e34 short oval race car / drift

the race series is open to any rwd car and can be built with either a full roll cage or just a small support hoop behind the driver (i went for full cage for saftey). you can modify the car if you wish or leave it alone, they race on small oval tracks around the country, ranging from tarmac, shale or mud, while you can race to win against other cars its also about getting the car sideways and having fun. the idea being it doesn't cost very much. you need fireproof overalls, helmet to orci spec and fuel tank etc in accordance with the rules but no lights or glass. racing seats are optional. tyres depend on the track and mainly get betwen 3 and 5 races per meeting, all in all good cheap fun and in mixed grids from jaguar to volvo it seems bmw are the car to have, had same success with an e36 last year but wasn't as easy or as fast to drive as the e34. race day costs around £20 plus your fuel so not costly these days. and depending where you live how far you have to travel to a track and they are growing in numbers as more people turn to them for fun. bit more to it than that but thats basics

e34 short oval race car / drift

not been on for a while, car has now done many meetings at 5 different tracks and is unbeaten so far this year, i have won the championship with 8 meetings left to go and also been invited to other tracks to demonstrate this cheap form of motor sport. apart from a few battle scars and a mishap with one radiator, the car has not missed a beat and is a real dream to drive and race. got some great shots of it from racing but here is my current favourite which shows it on full opposite lock on a shale track which was awesome to drift round the entire track. need to paint the brake calipers to stand out me thinks for shots like this. comments welcome

not been on here for while to update. car still not sign written as every time its been planned for its rained lately. car was raced over the bank holiday weekend at easter and in a nut shell , its awesome. the power and torque seem just right for the short oval track. its now fitted with max sport rb3's on the rear and yoko rally tyres on front, which on mud provide plenty of grip yet allow some tail out action. had the car weighed and she tipped the scales at 1187kg so might remove bit more metal here and there. had seven races so far and won all seven of them. high light for me was catching and over taking a toyota starlet with a 275bhp red top in it, may struggle in the dry against it but in the wet the 5 had better traction out of the corners and had huge grin on my face when passed him. especially as my race car owes me under 1k and his engine and gearbox owes him 14k lol. i also think experiance did play a little into it as after 23yrs of racing, correct tyre pressure's and throttle control can count for a lot when on very wet mud. after two days of racing so far i have a 30 point lead in the championship and apart from fuel and cleaning mud from under arch's the car never missed a beat, so more than happy with it and temp wise it never got over 70 degree's so the front can stay as it is. see how it copes with a hot day that might then change. should have raced again today but due to the prolonged rain since last meeting it was cancelled. next modification is a sump guard as its not that far from the floor and loads of mud was squashed in fins on front of sump and between crossmember and engine. only downside was cleaning all the mud off from under car that took ages and filled my green bin up and should give bin man a hernia trying to move it

plenty off air flow from below where the mesh is, until its raced if temps do rise to far then can add some vents to the front but think it should be fine.

not the best pictures, managed to get the car painted, its a fiat metalic blue which also has metal flake in the laquer so sparkles really well in the sun , not that it shows in the photo's. still have some work to do to the front end to close it all off but doing what i can in the short time left before racing starts. sign writing is booked for the 6th april to finish off the outside. hope to finish all other jobs this weekend

10k to spend on indulgent car...

for what its worth if i had 10k to spend i'd keep current driver and get one of these, just for the shear noise, acceleration, drifting, leaving many bigger cars for dead and just huge smiles but then it may not be up your street http://www.smartuki.com/
