MOT time for my 525iX and reluctantly sell :(

Mobi, If you're in no rush to sell, you should stick it on Carandclassic.co.uk, I've had success with that site in the past, plus it's free. Regards Will

    525ix Is it worth it?

Sounds like he's trying to get as much for the car as possible, with the minimum hassle!

    525tds engine combined with 525iX?

Thanks guys, good answers. Gonna stick to fixing up the iX bodywork for now I think, unless I get a good offer for it as is
  10. Hi All, Whilst I've been toying with whether to scrap or fix up my rusty old iX (see other post) someone was chatting about the possibility of switching the M50 block for the diesel version (M51?). Does anyone know if this has been done before and how effective, is it worth doing (mpg gain mostly)? Regards Will

525iX failed MOT - scrap or fix?

Hi 540, thanks for your reply. Don't want it to cost me anymore than I've spent already, so reluctant to Ebay it, hence posting here. Leaning towards parting it currently...

525iX failed MOT - scrap or fix?

Hi guys, Bought an E34 525iX last November as a winter run around, and it's been a great car for that, especially given all the snow we had here in South Yorkshire. MOT runs out first week of May so I decided to put it in last week, as there were a few things I suspected needed doing, with the sills the 'most suspect' of these. Anyway, to cut a long story short, it has failed on 14 items (listed below), and there's several other items I know about not on that list. Essentially, the worse of the it is that really it needs new sills on both sides, rather than patching up, as the jacking points at the front have also gone. Added to that a couple of front suspension items (main dealer only) and it becomes uneconomical to fix. Parking brake efficiency below requirements (3.7.A.10) Offside Windscreen washer provides insufficient washer liquid (8.2.3) Offside Rear Body has a projection caused by corrosion (6.1.C.1) Nearside Front floor to sill Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded (2.4.A.3) Nearside Rear wheel arch Body has a sharp edge caused by corrosion (6.1.C.1) Offside Outer Rear sill Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded (5.2.6) Nearside Outer Rear sill Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded (5.2.6) Both front to rears Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c) Offside Track rod end ball joint has excessive play (2.2.B.1f) Nearside Track rod end ball joint has excessive play (2.2.B.1f) Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2) Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content at idle excessive (7.3.D.5) Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive (7.3.D.4) Exhaust emissions Lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits (7.3.D.4) So based on this, I'm wondering whether to scrap ('recycle'), or part the car, or save it. We have the space so parting it would be the best option financially but it'd be a shame to do this, given it's fairly rare (though not worth that much). I've really enjoyed owning it, it's been a great workhorse and brilliant for days out with the family especially in the recent poor weather. It's a 1993 525iX in Granite Silver, with grey leather interior (non-sports). Mostly in good condition if well used. The cars does appear to be fairly original and have most of the bits, though the tool box items weren't there when I got her. Have also recently bought new boot struts & petrol breather pipes but have not fitted them due to the MOT fail. What does everyone else think I should do? Have thought long and hard about it, would be a shame if it had to be scrapped. What I don't have time for is to do the work myself to fix her up, so if anyone out there fancies it please let me know? The local scrap man here says £250-300 so open to offers. MOT runs out 8th May, taxed until the end of May but ideally I want to get the last months tax back. Regards Will

    E28 wheels

Captain, I agree 16s look fab on an E28, though I had 15 Alpinas on my last one (an early 1982 henna red E28) and they looked fab too. On the subject of 16s, due to a house move I'm just about to advertise my prized set of E28 M5 BBS 16s. I was saving these for my next E28 in the future sometime but it seems we need the money now (according to the boss). PM me if you're interested, they have they centre caps and were refurbed last year, but no tyres on them currently.
