What did you do to your E39 today ?

    hunter wheel alignment.
  2. Timing chain guide shredded. Lucky not to wreck the engine, apparently. Two pages of parts. Engine sounds great though!
  3. It was an expensive noise..£4k to sort.

E39 M5 door / wing mirror glass replacement

I believe electric folding mirrors are standard on E39 M5s.

E39 M5 door / wing mirror glass replacement

If you want new and like-for-like (dimming, tint, heated etc) you will almost certainly need to go to a main dealer. I replaced mine via Cotswolds BMW - a mere £200+ a few years ago...

    E39 M5 Buying Advice

You've probably seen this but if not.... https://www.pistonheads.com/news/general/bmw-m5-e39--ph-buying-guide/31567 The one you are interested in seems to have a good pedigree, not a bad price and been well-looked after. If it has been looked at periodically by CPC it would indicate that a previous owner was an enthusiast. Photos in the ad are pretty awful so hard to tell bodywork condition and if there is any rusting. Hard to pick out any 'common' problems other than the sort of things you would expect of an older car. Good luck looking.

How would you value an E39 M5

I guess, keep an eye on usual places: Pistonheads, Autotrader etc. As Davidwood said, unless yours has less than 30k miles on clock been kept under wraps for most of its life, you are looking around the £12-18k mark depending on usual factors of age, mileage, condition, how well its been looked after and the luck of finding the right buyer at the right time etc. Reads like yours would most likely be nearer the top end of the scale. I am not sure quite how you actually do a private sale in these Covid days though. If a prospective buyer was someone I knew or perhaps a member of this forum it might be OK. But if not, would I want to have a stranger test driving my car while I sat in the passenger seat or back seat? Not really. And I am hardly likely to let a complete stranger go for a test drive without me being on board. Selling to a trader or part-ex is normally the worst financial option.
  8. Hi, thanks again. I think a trip to a reputable local garage will be the best course of action, now I am more confident that driving there won't make things a whole lot worse!
  9. Thanks. Some element of reassurance there! I have driven it a bit recently including a good run down a 70mph dual carriageway but it doesn't seem to have made any difference. It is odd that the noise completely disappears between 800-1,100 revs. Is any other "cure" for sticky lifters? cheers.
  10. Thanks. Much appreciated. The clicking does seem to be coming from the upper part of the engine, possibly more the off-side. I don't really have the facilites, or knowledge to do much mechanical work on the car myself. There are a couple of OK garages nearby so I think I will, armed with your thoughts, see what they might diagnose, or at least eliminate, as a possible problem before deciding on the next course of action.
  11. After 13 years ownership of my E39 M5 I am thinking of selling. Various reasons (the impending threat of London's ULEZ charge of £12.50/day spreading to my part of London being the major one). Much as I still love my car, I can't justify paying this just to leave my drive! I really struggle to think of what I could replace it with. I only drove 2.5k miles last year (at 14mpg) so think something more economical, with decent performance when needed and big enough to squeeze the golf clubs in the boot and able to handle our great capital's roads with their potholes and interminable "traffic calming" measures. A hot(ish) hatch (not a Honda R) seemed a good start and ticked most of my boxes. So, I test drove a new Golf Gti DSG performance. All the write-ups rave about this car but I was really disappointed. It was OK inside with all the modern stuff but on the road it felt really sluggish, bouncy and not very settled (not very techinical description, sorry!). The only missing relevance optional extra was dynamic chasis option. Maybe that would make a difference? It was a relief to get back into my M5 with 100k on the clock (albeit the GTi had a few less creaks!) Anyway, anyone any views/experience on the BMW to Golf Gti move or driven both? Did I miss something? Any ideas what else I might try? Budget £25-30k subject to what I raise through selling mine! Any thoughts appreciated.

Anyone swapped an E39 M5 for a Golf Gti?

I probably would, but from October 2021 when the Ulta Low Emmision Zone spreads to out to the north and south circulars, the London Mayor wants to charge me £12.50 everytime I take the car off the drive (because it is Euro 3). It already costs me this to go into central London (inside the congestion zone). Not that I drive into town. Added to which my local authority is upping my resident street parking charge from £120/pa to £280pa from April this year. Charges are now to be based on emissions. They are out to get us!! I can see this spreading to other cities before 2035.

Thanks for posting. Ruled out due to the limited size of the boot.

Quite like the look of these as they are a bit different. Not sure I want a three door "estate" though and not sure the golf clubs would fit in the boot! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-C30-T5-R-Design-2010-stunning-condition/303436498466?hash=item46a6398622:g:Hd0AAOSwtoleFPuw

Anyone swapped an E39 M5 for a Golf Gti?

I was hoping it wasn't too far off £20k now! Showing my age here, but I had a Mk2 Gti in 1985. Now that would have appreciated if I had stuck it in a garage!

Anyone swapped an E39 M5 for a Golf Gti?

Thanks for the report. That's pretty impressive. I guess one of the main worries is getting down to your 12-15% charge and struggling to find a rapid charger or, as I have read, finding that the one you are aiming for is out of order/busy etc. Definitely one for the shorter journeys, for me. I would find it a struggle not being able to "make progress" on motorways when the need arose!
  19. https://www.motoringresearch.com/car-news/bmw-m5-sold-auction-pebble-beach/ sorry if posted before, but just stumbled on this (as I search e39 v Gti Golf in Google)... OMG as they say.

I have used http://www.twgautomotive.co.uk/ in Camberley and they are very good. Set up by a couple of former BMW technicians a few yeaars ago they provide all main dealer services at half the price. Will, is the boss and knows his stuff.

Interesting. So, what is your real world mileage and charging up time for a normal drive? I do drive around the south east and Oxfordshire (golfing dog walking etc) and wouldn't want to spend half the day looking for and charging the car. My wife has an Si4 Evoque (actually a really nice car to drive) which does about the same mpg as my M5 (which she won't drive ) and she is quite keen on the idea of our "other" car being more environmentally-friendly. I will though almost certainly have to sell the M5 to buy a replacement one.

Anyone swapped an E39 M5 for a Golf Gti?

Funnily enough I was just watching a YouTube thing on M140i v M135i. Definitely interesting although, having had a BMW since 2006, I was thinking about a change of manufacturer.

OK I will explore the EV option further. I have been reading about the problems of getting rid of lithium, but I guess they will eventually find a way or an alternative.

Anyone swapped an E39 M5 for a Golf Gti?

Probably very sound advice. Not sure I am quite ready for an EV although it clearly makes sense. I dont think the old golf clubs will fit in an i3 boot which I read somewhere is quite small.... Now, where's my crack pipe!
