After a 3 year apprenticeship he has just passed all 7 of his VW exams. In 6 he scored 100% and in one he scored 92%. Either way it was enough for him to come top of the class.

This should slow them down a bit. Plus a tracker is well worth it.

I once borrowed a mates L reg 518 for a few days and it was a soul destroying gutless piece of crap. It handled like boat with performance to match. Never again. The 520 6 cylinder is a much better engine

I am hoping for more than a few hundred I think we are talking 3 grand or more for the brakes and exhaust alone. I will most likely leave the Bilstein suspension on it but I will get some 2nd hand front brakes and get them refurbished. Other things like the dinan strut brace and up rated front and rear roll bars will be sold or changed.

I have a friend who owns his own garage so getting the work done is not really a problem as I can put it on the ramp and do most of the work my self. Plenty to ponder over as they say.

cars exhibiting soot from the rear is a classic example of rich running.

Do you know what temperature your car is running at water temp wise? And by that i mean by looking at the KTEMP readout on the dash display once you've accessed the secret menu, test 7?

You need to do this first and see what you are running at. 79C is the norm, an occasional dip to 78C is acceptable once the oil is up to temp also.

Anything below that and the car will gradually run rich causing the soot on the tailpipes and rear bumper as you describe.

Stats are a known quantity on the car and need to be of good quality replacements, even then they can fail in as little as a year. The temp sender that lives in the stat could cause this also and is a cheap and easy 15 minute fix. Be sure to get the sensor from the dealers not aftermarket

Also how many miles are on your pre cat 02 sensors? Another part that can cause issues you have.

I would say as its a black smoke its unburnt fuel rather than oil and wouldn't have thought you would have that if the seperators were blocked.

However, if you do end up replacing the stat. Replace the lower oil seperator hoses at the same time which do go squishy on higher mile cars and are virtually inaccessable without removing the stat

    Hi Maca,

Those firms that do that kind of work 'try' as best as possible to emulate the work done by companies like BMW, Supersprint, Eisenmann, Magnaflow,Akrapovic, Meisterschaft and other high end brands. Look at these brands websites and the information they put up about R&D, testing and manufacturing facilities and then compare to the cheaper brands. For instance, just which brands actually 'found out' that for the E39 M5, equal length headers worked well?!! - A higher end brand or brands must've designed and tested various prototypes etc is what I'm trying to say!

The 'race car' type stuff has different requirements to road cars, they perhaps won't be as restricted to noise and temperature/heat factors and thus, more 'raw' headers can be made up relatively easily and within that sort of application perhaps not as much R&D is required, or, information from the brands/manufacturers who have done the R&D can be used and can be manipulated for use on the vehicle. If they want to try out a different level of characteristic, they can make up some headers and try them out.

Next time we meet, I can take you to a nearby exhaust specialist who have full testing, R&D and research facilities and after I spoke to one of their guys very briefly ( i was just passing) he did say that they generally don't make exhausts for BMW's as they concentrate on their core client base and the brands he mentioned were Koniggsegg, McLaren, Lamborghini ! However, he did say that they will consider doing development work on BMW M cars !

    Cheers, Dennis!

Hmmm, I dont know if I would agree with the R&D side of things ...... just throwing this out there. But there are many firms out there that hand make headers for various cars and race cars. They make them for that particular car and usally with the car there so they are complete one off's. These guys don't spend £££££ on R&D but still turn out fantastic work. As far as I was aware its about making sure thet are as close to equal length as possible.

Also I thought that the Van Man ones were designed by him and then made up so again I doubt they had ££££ spent on R&D.

I do agree that the headers with out a remap don't give great numbers but with a remap very good numbers can be had, in fact I've seen a headered car put down less power than it did before the headers with out having a map.

The total, including all parts, fitting the rear double glazing and VAT, was a few £ over 10K. The split was approximatly 6K for the work, 4K for parts.
