    Final drive swap?

    Am I right in thinking that manual 535i feel more responsive with the final drive from the auto? I'm not looking for neck snapping acceleration but I would like my 535 to just feel a little quicker from standstill. As such, what's the best final drive ratio?

    Incredibly long shot I know but seek the following to suit a 1991 535i please. Coilovers or possibly a lowered spring / shock kit? Supersprint full system. 6 branch RHD manifold. Hens tooth. Unicorn droppings. Thanks in advance.
  5. As per the title, I'm just wondering how bad the TATechnix stuff from Germany really is? It's TUV compliant so I'd like to think it's not terrible but it's also very cheap, so makes me think it's terrible! My car is currently on tired stock suspension and I've been offered a complete kit for peanuts. Is it worth fitting whilst I save for KWV3's or Bilstein or should I continue to set sail in the good ship OE? As an aside, what kind of drop do people usually go with on an E34 and what's the widest rubber that can be fitted without fouling the arch when running staggered 9 & 10J x 17's?     Ideally I want to drop my 535i by about -50mm and lose the arch gap. It's mainly a road car so ultimate performance isn't an issue. So far I am thinking Bilstein B8's and -50mm Eibach but any suggestions welcome. This is how it currently sits and I will drop from 265 rear tyres to maybe 235 for clearance?

    Considering their cost I wouldn't be happy if I had to start filing them in an effort to bodge them on. I think I will most likely wait till it's lowered and then just see how it feels. It's a road car anyway, so unlikely to ever see the track unless my Lotto win comes and I can drop an S62 in there. I just want to lose some of that arch gap and get it looking its best.

    Thanks. Any help getting the right kit would be appreciated. Did you have any bump steer issues? I'm running 10 x 17 with 265 section Yokohama on the rear and they only just fit. There's the tiniest bit of rub when cornering so I imagine I will need to fit a narrower tyre when I drop the ride height or will lowering give me extra negative camber and actually stop the rubbing? ETA - My 535 is a '91 car but I'm unsure on whether it's got early or late top mounts? I'm pretty new to E34 so learning as I go.

    Thanks for the responses guys. I think I'm going to go with Bilstein B8 / Eibach -45mm in a couple of weeks from now. I was going to order the spacers to address bump steer but just saw this video... Did anyone else have issues?

    New to E34

    Congrats on the purchase! I've been using mine for the daily work commute recently and it's not missed a beat. Mind you, mine has only done about 207k miles so quite low compared to some here.

    What have you done on your E34 Today

    I've been thinking of getting one of those myself. I did offer 250 for a genuine one on eBay but when my offer was rejected I spotted the copies for around £70 and figured it might be worth a punt. I definitely wouldn't pay the 350 being asked of the genuine one. I had put the E34 away in the garage but had a change of heart and figured I'd use it for work all week instead. It's surprising how many positive remarks it seems to attract.

    As we live next to a farm the roads are covered in mud and cow muck in the winter months so it's time to give the E34 a break. I gave the underside and the wheel arches a thorough jet washing first and then a quick blast down the A30 to dry things off.

    It would depend on the rest of the cars condition for me. Also what engine and box will you fit? Is the interior nice? I appreciate that it's only going to cost you in time (above and beyond the purchase price) but E34 can be bought pretty cheaply here, although prices do appear to be creeping up of late. There seems to be more interest too, with YouTube channels like M539 Restoration taking on Misha's E34 M5 etc.
  18. I spent ages at Surrey Rolling Road doing gradual upgrades to my old E30 325i race car and the final mod was the BTB six branch and Supersprint system. I think we saw an improvement of 2 or 3 bhp but a similar drop in torque. Going with DTA standalone was the best mod pn both that and the S14 in my M3. I did try an aftermarket 4 branch on the M3 and lost 18bhp compared to the stock item which gave me 252bhp with Schrick cams and carbon air box.

    Oil Flush? Low pressure

    I never use fully synthetic oils in BMW engines of this era or earlier. I appreciate everyone has their own opinion re oils but I have never had an issue with oil pressure and/or engine failure. I use either a good quality mineral oil or semi synthetic 10w40 like Mobil 2000 or similar. I've found less leaks when sticking with mineral oils also.     Exhaust options.

    At the last MOT the tester noted the system on my 535i is corroded so I have been looking at options for replacement that aren't horrifically expensive. Any suggestions and experience of their quality, sound etc please? I had Eisenmann on the E30 M3 and it was lovely but not cheap.

    What have you done on your E34 Today

    Fitted a Turner chip in the ECU on my 535 this morning. I know they make some pretty big claims but what I wanted was a smoother idle. I'd already topped up the tank with V power and after fitting the chip I just let the engine idle for 20 - 30 seconds before taking the car for a bit of a drive to let the ecu do its thing and adjust itself or whatever it does? I then turned it off for 15 minutes and fired it back up to see if there was any notable difference from stock? The idle is now rock steady and there's no apparent fuel smell as there had been. On acceleration there is a noticeable improvement and it just feels to have a little more pep. Overall the pick up throughout the lower revs is just improved and it feels more responsive. It doesn't feel more powerful, which I kinda knew was unlikely, but it just feels nicer to drive and it has certainly been worth the effort. I also gave the interior a bit of a clean and replaced the naff silver Pioneer head unit with something more in keeping with an E34. I also replaced the steering wheel with a suede Sparco which feels great to use. I know it won't be to everyones taste but I just want a suede E30 M3 gear knob to match it now and I have a BMW horn to fit. I also spotted a TDS outside the local school that appears to be doing daily driver duties. That's the second E34 I've seen in the wild recently other than my own.

    No, although I've not been looking that hard to be honest. I kind of resigned myself to getting something custom when the current system finally throws in the towel.
