    Auto Gearbox - Odd Occurrence

This has happened twice now within the last two weeks, so I think I need to ask about it. Kicking down I've now twice felt, how can I put it, a form of jolt or a 'silent' clonk (if that make sense!). Can't hear anything but can 'feel' it through the throttle pedal. Any ideas anyone?? Cheers

    Auto Gearbox - Odd Occurrence

Thanks for your responses - the car's done 89k, and that's genuine cos I've known the car since new. No record in the full history of gearbox oil being changed.

    Rear Diff Oil Leak

Was poking my head under the rear end yesterday, checking the exhaust condition, and I noticed what I initially thought was an oil drip formulating on what I presume is the rear diff. Because I couldn't reach it I got a yardstick and touched it onto the suspect blob and indeed, it was oil. I've never noticed any oil spills on my driveway so it's either a very fresh leak or so slow it hardly ever drops. Anyone got any thoughts of what it might be or where it's coming from? My E39 is a '99 523i SE with auto. Thanks all.

    Rear Diff Oil Leak

In the meantime, is there a warning light that will alert me to the fact that there's not enough oil in the diff??

    Rear Diff Oil Leak

Doh..!! Yeah thanks. I posted this problem, then noticed afterwards that the previous post discussed - 'rear diff oil leaks'. That's well spooky..! The car will be due an Inspection 1 around September time so will get it checked out then.
  6. Can anyone recommend an independant "BMW capable" servicing outfit in the South-East? I have somewhere in mind, GCS Engineering near Horsham, West Sussex, but if anyone knows of good 'uns in the Crawley/Gatwick Airport area please let me know.

    Driving in "S" mode.... questions...

So, did some 'manual stuff' on the way home yesterday. Pushed shift stick to the left and got 'DS' on the dash display as usual. Then, for the first time in the 3 months I've owned the car, nudged it back to bring the gears down then back up. What happens tho' if you floor it in, say 2nd, but don't change up? Would the engine just redline cos it's expecting the driver to change up? Also, if you're in 3rd for example and knock it back over into 'D', does the box leave it in 3rd or change up/down into the most appropriate gear?

    Driving in "S" mode.... questions...

Great - well, I learnt something today. Didn't know 5th wasn't utilised when in 'S'..! I'm also embarassed to admit that I've never tried shifting manually when in 'S', either. Will give it a go on the way home from work tonite.

Kidney Grille Fitment + M Badge

Just received some nice new black grilles from SSDD. Are there any 'loose' clips or fittings required or do they literally pop into place as they are from the outside? And opinions please - My E39 has a factory Sport Pack - 'M' suspension, steering wheel, seats, dechromed, debadged etc etc. Is it a bit naff (and fraudulent) to fix a discreet 'M' badge on my badgeless boot? Your honest / uncensored comments are appreciated...! Cheers all...

    DIY Bodywork Painting

Thanks all for your guidance. I can deal with the few chips on the wings and after treating the bonnet with a 'black' polish, Turtle Wax I think, it's a whole lot better. Main concern is the front bumper. So, to do this I'd prefer to remove it and spend time on it in the garage. Therefore - how do I remove the front bumper from a '99 SE?? As always, any links or guidance appreciated.

    DIY Bodywork Painting

Not sure where to put this question but this section seems as good as any...I'm looking to do some touch up work and scuff repairs, plus painting, to a couple of areas to the front bumper and wings on my '99 E39. It's the only area of the car that lets it down and I have had a quote for a front end respray (wings, bumper, bonnet) for around the £550 mark. However, I'd thought I'd have a go at some small stuff first and if it all goes 'Pete Tong' I'll put it in for a proper job. Anyhow, is there anywhere on BMW5, or any other website, that discusses this sort of thing and assists the DIY sprayer?? Colour is 'Jet Black' by the way, and not a metallic which must make it easier .

    DIY Bodywork Painting

Thanks Pad - yep, 500 notes is a good price but it's thru 'family friend' so a preferential rate I guess. Quality of work previously tried and tested so no concerns there. Still, keen to do a bit myself. Can I get the necessary papers and compounds at Halfrauds, do you know?

Kidney Grille Fitment + M Badge

Well that's fairly conclusive - there will be no M badge on my rear ...was very unsure myself and I'm glad you all said no..... and thanks Jane for the grille fotos..
  14. Has anyone out there purchased the carbon fibre, or carbon fibre appearance bonnet / boot badges? - I've noticed them being advertised on a couple of sites. If so, are they any good or just the 'all too common' aftermarket poor quality and fit?? Any info appreciated. Cheers all.

    Aftermarket BMW Bonnet/Boot Badges

Y'know what Pixor - that does look good. Did they come from SSDD Motorsport?

    Aftermarket BMW Bonnet/Boot Badges

Yeah, got it - thanks. Not sure whether to go for factory blue/white/black or be a bit different and go for black/silver. Seeing as my E39 is all black I thought the black/silver might suit, however a couple of my mates think you'd need to live in Hounslow and be called Ali G to fit that sort of thing....!

    Aftermarket BMW Bonnet/Boot Badges

Just Googled SSDD and got nothing. Sorry, should've asked previously, who are they and how do I contact them?? Ta..!

    Aftermarket BMW Bonnet/Boot Badges

Thanks for your comments and opinions - I'll contact SSDD. I must admit that I'm not sure about going black/white instead of standard colours. Though because my E39 is black and dechromed/de badged from build I'm tempted to give them a try.

    Kidney Grilles

During some forthcoming restoration work on the front end of my '99 E39, I'm planning to replace the standard chrome grilles with all black items. I've seen them advertised on various sites but can anyone who's been satisfied having purchased and fitted some recommend any particular supplier or make? Also, some are advertised as the 'wide look' - what's this all about? Thanks all....
  20. My recently purchased '99 E39 523i has 87k miles on the clock, so has averaged a little over 9k per year since new. My utilisation is expected to be much less - probably around 5k per year. It was last serviced in March 2008 at 78k, the next service is an Inspection I and I currently have 'three greens' showing on the dash on start up. Question is - I read somewhere that for low mileage utilisation the engine oil should be changed one a year - so that's now. Does the service indicator system take account of this or is it ok to keep running 'til the lights gradually disappear and go beyond the year. If I do an 'ad-hoc' oil change I might find the Inspection I being due a little while later, which includes an oil change - or am I worrying about nothing??

Yeah, OK - I mean the vertical slats......

    Kidney Grilles

Wow - this generated some comment..! Thanks all for your comments and experience/advice. Despie being a dab hand with a spray can, I'll probably buy a new set of grilles in black. The current ones are a bit chipped and one has split right thru one of the slats. Also, seeing as the complete front end of the car is to be resprayed and fitted with new fogs, number plate and badge I may as well finish it properly. As and when it's done I'll post some pics of the result (when I figure out how to upload pics....!)

    Bonnet Badge

Anyone got any links to a supplier for a new bonnet badge? Just been quoted £25 by the local main dealer so would prefer to get one for less, if possible. Currently in the process of planning a front end revamp including new paint on the bonnet, bumper and front wings on my '99 model - new plate, badge and fogs are in order here. Have been reading with interest the recent comments on 'angel eyes' aftermarket units - particularly the downsides and disappointments. I think I'll keep mine original but attempt to replace the perspex covers.

    Front Fog Lamps

Thanks Micro, just what I need. Will order from this supplier.

    Front Fog Lamps

I need to replace both fog lamp lenses on my '99 E39. Are they removed via the recessed screw hole inboard of each lamp, or round the back/underneath somehow? Also, can I just replace the lenses or do I need new lamp units?
