    DIY F11 air spring replacement

Not really, not 1cm. I found the adjustment as the Arnotts springs sat higher at the back than the OEM springs as standard, nearly 20mm higher, so I dropped them by 20mm, but they were then a little too soft, so I raised them by 10mm and felt fine and didn't look noticeably higher.

It only takes one little sharp stone to put a hole in them, can happen any time. I wouldn't worry. Plus just buy the £30 ones, there is no difference to how the car rides. You can make more difference adjusting the ride height, lower it 10mm and it rides a little softer, up it 10mm and it firms up more.

Just got a notification on this thread come through. Mate hit 200k miles a couple of weeks back on his F11 with the £30 air springs fitted at just under 120k miles.

If something rips a massive hole in it, no. But if, which is what usually happens, you get a small pin prick type hole in it yeah. You normally notice it if left for a couple of days and one side lower than the other. The compressor will pump it up and keep it up too, but then the compressor will be working overtime. It should just kick in to level the car, not keep it up. But to change them for no reason seems a bit silly. If you are doing it yourself, for the sake of £65 go for it. But a garage will probably charge 1-2 hours labour and you are then at £250 or so for no reason. The reality is these tend to go when a stone gets caught under the airbag, not due to age. So you have just as much chance of new ones going as the ones already on there.

If it drops replace. Simple. They may last another couple of years.

F11 Again or move on to a G31?

Yeah it went fine. I just wanted it to be a bit more exciting than my F11 when pressing on, and it wasn't. It felt more like another diesel with a nicer sound and a bit more rev range. It reminded me of my 335i touring, absolutely nothing wrong with it at all, but ultimately a bit run of the mill. I ended up swapping that for an older M3 and an A6 3.2fsi Quattro avant. I'm actually considering swapping the 530d for an F31 320d auto, as a family car the 320d is a peach. I bought one at the start of the last lockdown as it cropped up locally silly cheap, and so thought I would run it for a few weeks while deciding what to do. It was a 320d ED with cloth seats, and it was superb. During summer we went from Norfolk down to Dorset, drove round all week and got home again on a single tank. The economy is just incredible, the car is just as comfy, arguably more so as the seats go lower and the cloth is so much nicer than leather. I think I am just loosing a bit of interest in these sort of cars, I get more pleasure from 700 miles to a tank than I do trying to make a big family car feel sporty. Much prefer to run that sort of car a bit older and then spend what I would have spent on buying a new/newer one on something fun. I guess I thought to 540i was going to feel far sportier, the reality was it didn't, at all. it was on a silly £429 down and then £429 a month deal, so really wanted to love it.

    Swap Runflats for normal tyres

No! They are the worst run flats out there, they don't get called Brickstones for nothing. If sticking with runflats try some Michelins.

F11 Again or move on to a G31?

I have to say, I was all set to do a silly cheap deal on a G31 540i, and in all honesty it didn't excite me all that much. So definitely go and drive one. I decided to keep my older car and buy something more fun to sit alongside it. No regrets.

F07 GT 520 rear suspension issues

The silica balls inside the compressor are probably full. You can open the compressor, pour them all out into a bowl and microwave them (around 5 minutes) and then put them back in and see if it works again. When they get full, happens more as they get older and when the air is really damp, the air can longer escape to allow the car to drop again. You can buy new silica balls, but try drying them out for now. You could just empty it for now and see if it works, but order some new ones as they stop moisture getting into the pump. Will be fine for a couple of weeks or so though.

Just buy and aftermarket one. They are so much cheaper and often better.

Yeah I think so. Can't remember. But the light goes off, then when you adjust the speed it makes a big difference. Have you ordered a new blower motor?

And? What happens when you take it off auto. Fans on face only. Adjust speed up and down. With it on lowest does it cycle etc.?

Do what I said above then. That will might tell us something for free.

It is worth taking the unit out and having a good look as Andrew says. if there is obvious signs of burning or smells, you know you're on the right track.

Remember the blower speed works on F series in both auto and manual mode. You need to take it off auto to properly test.

The cycle thing happened with me, but only when hitting full power. If left on auto it would blow, but on a very, very low speed. If you put you temp to minimum, air con on of course, take it off auto, set blowers to face only, and with the car up to temperature (engine wise) and then adjust the speed what happens to blower power? Does it go up and down. And are all the vents the same temperature? Adjust the red/blue dial as well to see if that works as expected.

Yeah, but when they hook up the system if it is not holding pressure they don't charge do they? BMW were absolutely clueless when I had my issue. They wanted to remove my dash to check every thing out. At that point I started doing dogging myself. The guys at STS when I popped in and I told them the issues I was having said straight away "Low gas!". They said the system is really weird in what it shuts down as the gas starts to get low. My issue was really low fan speeds, when you set the blower to just blow from the forward dash vents, it would blow cold from the left side only. Turns out this is a feature built in to keep cool air on the driver while reducing the amount of gas used. But set up for LHD cars and not transferred over to RHD cars.

Sorry disagree there. When the gas is low you can get these exact problems. Getting it checked is quick and free. If it is low they can tell you straight away. If it isn't you walk away knowing it is not that. I went through this last year. Bought a new blower unit. Still the same. Plugged INPA in and you can see the fan starting then slowing down to bugger all. In INPA you could force the fan on full, worked no problem.Bought bought a new fan and resistor. Still the same. Reading back through the forum posts, more so stateside, it kept coming back to low gas in climate system. Took it to STS and they said that the gas was low, should be between 32 and 38 or something and was at 29. Emptied it, refilled it and BINGO! Back with a properly working system, icy cold, blowers that take your head off when set to max, and happy chap. No of course it may not be your case, but no idea why you wouldn't drop in and ask them to check?

But does all the dash vents feel the same? Speed and temperature? If it is low on refrigerant then it will start to shut things down. The E91 is a weird one as it first starts to send cold air to just the passenger side vent, it is actually that it just sends it to drivers side on LHD cars and they haven't swapped it over for RHD models. It will also not blow on full power while it is low. Get your local place to test it, if it drops below a certain level it starts to do some very strange stuff.

I would check the climate gas before going further. Do all the dash vents kick out the same when set to say 18ºc and blowing full power but still on auto?
