Early drive this morning up to the badlands of Croydon. Well, Purley Way so that was okay. Called into AJ Turners to discuss a Dynavin installation and a few other mods. Really great morning to be out cruising about. Also took the opportunity to get a photo with the Croydon Airport 'gate guardian', which was nearby.

What did you do to your E39 today ?

I've done it the same way as Derek because I've kept the fulls. In the Golf I painted over the lenses so the output was terrible. A diode on the high beam side onto the shutter/ballast meant when I pulled the stalk the ballast also fired. I know it's not good for them but meh.

There is yes and with spare 'holes' for additional pins, I think. Don't ask me what pins it is that goes into those connectors. Thanks again for your help in our previous discussion thread. I did also buy the earth connectors that would push into the 'comb' connections, but never fitted them as they have barbs too, so once they are in they are in. I can always remove the earths I installed. Comb type earth connection, top right in pic below. I thought I had a pic of the crimp connector but I don't, its part #2 in this pic http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=FR72-EUR-01-2013-F10-BMW-535i&diagId=61_2799 Size 1,5-2.5 mm^2 But yes, I know what you mean about getting round to it. I ordered the VW pins in Aug 2017, thanks goodness I never fitted them as I then got the new towbar last October. Waited till the better weather to fit, but wished I had fitted it earlier so I could charge the battery over the Xmas period when it was cold and the car didn't turn a wheel for at least a week. Although it started on the button.......

What did you do to your E39 today ?

5 hours later, and I have finished installing the new track rods. Much better steering...it feels tighter. The old ones were possibly from the factory (294k miles) as they had the BMW stamp on them, and they weren't replaced in my 6 years ownership. I replaced my facelift halogen projectors with some bi-xenon projectors from The Retrofit Source (project thread on this forum somewhere), and I connected my high beams connection to the bi-xenons to enable the bi-xenon function. However, this meant that my high beams would only work if my low beams were on. During the day time, I would just flash my front fogs to let people through or say thanks. Okay, I hear you ask, how come you just didn't connect it to your LED high beam bulbs? I did for a while, but I was impressed with the light throw from the bi-xenons. Now that I have a high beam splitter, I am able to flash people even if my lights are off and keep the bi-xenon functionality (when low beams are on). Low beams off: Pull stalk = LED high beams illuminate Low beams on (bi-xenon on low beam mode): Pull/push stalk = LED high beams & Bi-xenon high beam mode

    A brief guide to E61 2.0d ownership.

I hope it offers an insight for potential purchasers. It's costing around the same as the purchase price to put right, but at least it will be good when done. I could have bought something else but maybe with similar problems lurking. Better the devil you know. Sent from my SM-G970F using Tapatalk

Great write up and interesting to see the pictures, thanks. Do you recon there is enough room in the existing loom sleeve to get the two cables down there for pins 10 and 11. I'm still toying with the idea of putting the ignition live in on mine but want it to look oem for warranty purposes.

    A Trip Up North

After Preston on the M6, there is only Lancaster, Penrith and Carlisle before you get to Glasgow. You want fish and chips in Blackpool? Go for it. Get on the M55 and it is only going to lose you an hour. And that probably includes the time for your chips to cool. While you are there, ask how they get the elephants up into the Tower circus. Lake District is great but remember it has lakes for one reason - it rains a lot. You could visit Liverpool or even Manchester if you are so inclined. But maybe somebody from the above 3 towns might give you the low down on local attractions. If you have a lady friend with you, you could always call in at Gretna Green

What did you do to your E39 today ?

    1) Fitted black roof ceiling handles and vanity lights. It was the only grey parts when I 'Sported' my interior. 2) I bought a screen-wash fluid tank that has the pump for the headlamp washer jets. My newly acquired front sport bumper has the washer jets but my car didn't come with that option. I thought I might as well retrofit it. 3) High beam splitter turned up, now I have quad high-beams (if my low beams are on). I'm running bi-xenon in the low beam part of the headlamps and LED high beam bulbs in the high beam part. 4) In a min, I am going to replace my track/tie-rods.

What did you do to your E60/61 today?

Fitted these I got from Mtec brakes. I'm pretty impressed as aside from solving my high speed/hard brake judder they look smart with the black e-coat and even taking it easy bedding them in; the difference in stopping power is fantastic. Great price too. I'm gonna do the rears next just for the aesthetics!

Agree but even taking into account the forum skew i.e. People tend only to discuss problems it is an established issue. My neighbours had an 11 plate that showed no signs but shat itself on the way to the supermarket effectively writing it off. As a private buyer I think I'd shy away. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Aren’t they in the middle of launching the new models? So might not be offering brochures for everything yet? Cant be as bad as Renault - I went in to get more details on the new Megane RS and they guy said to me “we don’t sell that” and then told me they didn’t have any information or brochures for most of the cars in their showroom! I promptly left and went to BMW and ordered an M140.

The diff pinion seal is easily the most tricky of the three seals to replace but it can be done DIY. What your supposed to do is mark the position of the pinion nut in relation to the shaft. Then when unwinding the nut, count the number of turns to fully remove it. I would thoroughly clean the thread on the pinion shaft before pulling this nut. Once the nut is removed you can then remove the drive flange (sometimes comes straight off sometimes need puller) and then your free to renew the seal. When refitting you would wind the nut back to exactly where your previously made mark would be. If you over tighten at this stage then this is where the danger comes in of changing the preload and/or backlash causing noise/whining. If the diff is high mileage then really all four bearings should be checked and really if your that far into it renewed, especially if any race has 'picked' up. In that case the diff 'should' need proper setting up,

Ticking off a few more niggles on the list. Replaced the front under panel screws and clips, on the main panel covering the gearbox I replaced most of the clips and plastic inserts as they no longer tightened properly, that was fun removing them without popping them into the chassis to rattle about forever more. you have to chop off the bottom, put a screw in and rip them out but at least it's all done. Today saw new ATE slider and slider mounts fitted on all 4 calipers (the same as BMW fit, no roundel on the originals either so I saved 60% going to Autodoc) I used ATE fitting paste and ATE plastilube on the back of the pads and contact points as I had poor results with ceramic paste as it dried out due to the high solids content, seems it's ok for fitting turbo bolts and pad backing but when I used some to fit new slider rubbers into the calipers it dried up and clumped up causing the sliders to bind so it was all redone with new parts by the book ready for the drive up to see Wakey this weekend. Just to add the slider themselves are meant to be dry. ATE and BMW state this so I have made sure they have no lube left in from fitting.

    E39 535i

I am currently restoring a 535i SE pre-facelift. I love the look of the preface SE with the chrome details and amber indicators etc. A nice set of 18's with a nice drop and they can look very smart. Mine is Biarritz Blue with sport black leather interior (including headlining and pillars). I'm not sure if it's a bit of an oddity as it has the higher power TU engine fitted despite being a preface model, so has 245 ps rather than 235 ps. It is plenty quick enough, yes the 540i is faster, and the 530i is not far behind with better fuel consumption and 'better' steering set-up. However, I have had a few 6 cylinder versions and can't tell any real difference between the two setups unless really pushing it. Is it worth buying a 535i? Definitely! It may be the unloved version due to the above reasons, but cruising along in the summer with windows down through the Cotswolds, it is amazing. Still get that beautiful V8 burble, and in reality it will still put a smile on your face when you accelerate hard.

Probably should have stuck it at the top of the window (guessing where the dealer stuck it?) but didn’t want to see it out of the rear mirror.

Sprayed my replacement exhaust black and replaced the headlight bulbs to brighter more modern ones.. Much better. Now just need to clean the car.
