    E61 - Four wheel alignment.

I'll have to find out - it's a reputable BMW specialist so hopefully it's the same/similar kit but I'll ask the question all the same. They didn't comment that it needed tyres for the alignment but they did question the other work it needs (and which they were hoping I'd pass their way) when I booked it in. They seemed quite surprised when I told them I was fitting the new suspension parts myself. I hadn't thought about getting the tyres online - I've always thought it a bit cheeky to ask a tyre shop to fit tyres you've not bought there. Just a personal flaw, not that I don't think they would. In any case the Kuhmos I have on the rear are only about half worn. I always intended to replace them with Conti Sport Contact 6 as I have these on the front and like them a lot, but only when they needed replacing. I brought it forward thinking they needed to be replaced for the four wheel alignment to be accurate but it seems I was misled on that.

I moved to Tide a year ago, my business is quite simple, so this solution to me is amazing. So much control at my fingertips !
  4. Just had my 33,000 mile major service done at Stradstone. All you guys out there who purchase a brand new BMW and take out Service Inclusive against the car but then sell it to the likes of me on 20,000 (ish) miles I salute you :) This would have set me back £600+ and I walked away with the price of an MOT. Sweet :)

    E60 520d exhaust

Carmadjim - how long was it spotless for? If it's only a matter of weeks, then the other posts here are likely correct. If it had been spotless for many thousands of miles, that says to me that everything was working as it should do (EGR, swirl flaps and DPF functioning correctly). If it then suddenly gets sooted up, something has caused it ie. something has changed - there's an issue with one of the trio of pollution controls that everyone seems so intent on removing. The first one to go is usually the EGR - nice thing is it's simple (ish) to remove and clean. Next suspect would have to be swirl flaps, but that depends on which version of which engine you have. Is it the M47 or N47 engine? And what year? Either way, just getting to the swirl flaps means removing a lot of plastic bits. None of it is hard, but you'd want to allow quite a bit of time if you haven't done it before. The latest incarnation of the swirl flaps shouldn't give too many problems - earlier versions are a nightmare. If you have the earlier ones, replace with later version. Less likely causes: improper combustion - look at air filter (when was it last changed?) or fuel injectors. Have you checked you car's running coolant temps? Stuck thermostats are common, and lead to the car injecting more fuel in an attempt to warm things up, which then causes more soot etc.

^Yes could be as your LCi doesn't have a gear lever, it just has a switch that looks like a gear lever as it's fly by wire. Pre LCi has a mechanical lever connected to the box.

    WANTED, 530i AEGEAN

First one was discussed here https://forum.bmw5.co.uk/topic/137583-e39-530i-aegan/ Been up for sale for a while. Second one looks a bit rough considering it's supposed to have had a recent respray.

    E61 - Four wheel alignment.

It might only be BMW dealers that have the wheel alignment kit that uses the small holes in the rims though. Worth asking about? Did you look at buying tyres on line? Then get a local trusted fitter to fit them? My new rear tyres came from Amazon and local fitter charged me a tenner each to fit them. I know he has the lever less tyre machine so no tools come into contact with my powder coated rims. Plus he says he needs to use that machine on runflats on big rims as it's too difficult to do by hand for the fitters! Bless.

    Heavy rain, Water leak

Thanks for the tips about videoing it with my phone. The screw that’s stuck is the top middle one rather than the hidden one on the right. Oddly it doesn’t seem that hidden on mine so will use the phone I’m loosening he correct screw! So that top one is the easiest to reach so I’ll just retry with a fresh arm on Saturday. My arms are quite thin too but it was still a struggle if the screws were tight. I’ll forget heating the screw as that will only make it expand of course! Will check the door vapour area too like you @paperjams. Can’t believe this in an age old issue. Probably be the same thing in an i8

    E61 - Four wheel alignment.

Thanks everyone, looks like I've been led a merry dance over the tyre situation. I'd better phone the tyre place up and cancel the tyres for the time being I reckon - still I've save nearly £300.00 so that's a result in itself. I reckon the Kuhmos I have on the rear should get me by until the next MoT in December at least. @535i Andrew I have to admit I'd never noticed those holes in the wheels before. I had to go out and check they actually existed on my car - indeed they do so thanks for that. Every day is a school day!
  12. Ok so took the car to bmw today for this noise but sodding thing wouldnt do it but weather wasnt hot enough anyway. So didnt drop it off and agreed to drop by when its doing it and when the weather is hot. I will update this thread again once i know more.

You are spot on Andrew as per usual, he said something along those lines so " to help emissions ". I understand that this new software comes with the egr cooler recall too. interestingly though I had the update to remedy harsh gear changes and this started afterwards, I thought maybe i was imagining the car running hotter but that confirmed it.

Sometimes the gear selector can be faulty. You need the codes read to pinpoint the fault.

    B47 Temperature drops

Lowers the exhaust temp so as not to stress the EGR as much? We know what can happen to EGRs when they get a bit toasty!

Interesting. Did they elaborate on the reasoning for running a cooler engine?

Car sitting - not doing much....

@Y15HAL, I used mine for the first time after 10 days of it being parked up. Started and ran perfectly. Got a very slight wiff from the aircon just on start up but disappeared very quickly. Stop start worked faultlessly so nothing wrong with the battery. I drove it for 5 miles and parked up and couldn't here the engine running, so quiet, I had to blip the throttle to hear it over the slight noise in the Tesco car park. That was running on VPower. 26.4 mpg average when I filled up yesterday.

Ok so just to update everybody after having a chat with a bmw technician. Its the new software that applied to cars causing this. Its running the engine cooler so i am pleased to hear that i was not going potty.

What brand manual gear and diff oil.

When the E60 was new, BMWs favoured oil brand was Castrol. Castrols website will tell you the type and volume of each oil you are after.

    E60 520d exhaust

It was scrubbed spotlessly clean by the vendor before you bought it or it was new. You've now driven it and got it dirty. You will still get soot particles even though it has a DPF, unless its been removed and you're not aware.

    E60 520d exhaust

I would guess the previous owner had the dpf removed and cleaned the exhaust before they sold it to you... how long have you had it?

Hi all, could anyone tell me why when I bought my 520d m sport the exhaust tail pipe was spotless and recently it all sooty? I thought the dpf would stop all soot coming out
