E12 coilovers finally arrive

Recommended Posts

Finally after a long wait and much discussion with RPM and IanE my GAZ coilovers have finally arrived. I'll finally be able to get the E12 looking spot on in terms of height.

Excellent!!

Dare I enquire about the price & how long they took to do them?!

IIRC., you had to supply them with a couple of front legs so they had the hub assembly?

Price was around £700 all in. The legs are off my car but it's been laid up while I was waiting for the diff and other bits. Turn around should have been 3-4 weeks but with christmas etc it's been about 6-7. Btw that's the workshop office floor. My house isn't that grubby!

That is a bit tempting...

Front end of mine needs dropping, rear is (probably?) okay though.

So, that's front coilovers, new fuel-tank, repaint the front offside edge of the bonnet,   &... &  Replace a dustcover so it'll pass an MoT..    :?

I'll get the exact price for you. There will be some extra costs. Rear top mounts etc but it's pretty straight forward.

I'm a bit stuck actually mate. I need the rear spring pads that you gave me the part numbers for. BMW have changed to some new computer system (last year) and since then getting parts is like pulling teeth. They can't even tell me stock anymore. I used to walk in and order parts and a week later they'd be here. Now who knows. Currently been waiting since august for 2 lower arms and now they can't tell me about these spring pads either which doesn't sound promising. There are some in the US but that will take ages although I have ordered some anyway. Could try some second hand ones to get me by. Got any ideas?

Thats a real shame. I spoke to my parts guys and they say the same thing. BMW are only showing one in the country and the other parts are back order AG (Germany) so could be 1 day or could be a month.

Must be some second hand e28 rear struts on ebay/ breakers somewhere.

Awesome, looking forward to seeing this. Is your car on the road? will keep a lookout as you're local. Not really seen an E12 around here.

Yes usually it is about as I occasionally take it to work and cruise round at weekends on sunny days to give it some use. You won't see it in the rain though  been off the road since august waiting for parts though. :(. I'll try to be at some car meets this year with it.

Spacers for the rear coilovers landed on my desk this morning. Nice having a machine shop at your disposal! Spring pads are currntly in Poole according to the tracking so looks like they'll be early :D

So we've made some progress today. I'll post some more pics of the caliper refurb later but you get the general idea. Coilovers, new bushes, refurb calipers, braided lines, new wheel bearings. The brake pipe mounts Ian had mentioned were removed from my struts before they were sent off so I still have the original brackets.

Yes mate. Took her out for a drive today. Loke a different car. I have so many pics to post so I think I'll do a build thread rather than these bits and pieces. Pulling the engine out to do the mains and big ends plus new oil pump and timing chain in a couple of weeks.

I'll get some complete shots tomorrow before It is off the road again as of tomorrow for big ends, mains, oil pump, chain, sprockets, recon alternator, rear main, brake master plus anything that pops up. The roof and sunroof are also being painted. This year I'm definitely just trying to get it to sorted "rat" status.

I'm still toying with the idea of helper springs as this is as low as the front will go. The rear I can set to drag on the floor without the need for them

Tyre sits about right in the arch IMO although lower is always better!

Looks lovely man, wheels are great! In my opinion definitely needs lowering a lot more ;)

What do you mean that's as low as the front goes? Have you run out of thread? I spoke to GAZ about helper springs because my springs were loose when the wheels were off the ground; they said they would shorten the shock absorber rod but that means sending all 4 units back to them. So I haven't done it yet!

Thanks HCP. The handling is transformed too.

Yes Ian exactly as you say. The back will go further but the front is at max before the springs become loose at full droop and that is something I'm not happy with doing just incase. I will need the helper to make it lower. So have you not got helper springs then?
