What did you do to your E39 today ?

Recommended Posts

Lovely looking touring that @Marc_86 :)

Serves the smug git right...

When I had an MOT done on my 7 series; there was a DB9 getting it's MOT and that failed on worn rear suspension... Had to laugh

MOT today. First one since I bought it exactly a year ago. Mileage is now at 60k and a bit so wasn't really expecting any issues. It was nice to hear

the Tester querying the age of the car relative to its overall condition.

Though you can't see it in the picture there was a chap with a four year old Range Rover sport getting his MOT done in the adjoining bay.

A sporty sort, sheepskin jacket, Churchill brogues, golfing trousers, you know the type, anyway he looked over at my car and with a patronising tone

in his voice said 'they don't make them like that anymore do they' I smiled and let it go then he had to ruin it by adding 'they go for ever those old bangers'

A short while later he was in an uproar as the examiner failed his Rangey on a leaking suspension strut, excessive play in the steering and a worn wheel bearing.

As I collected my new MOT certificate I nodded towards his car and said 'they still make them like that then?'

That shut him up.

Old banger?! I'd have been livid, especially given the mileage and condition if your car - it looks stunning. Given the choice between a brand new Range Rover and a mint condition / as new E39, there wouldn't even be a decision to be made! The E39 has more class than the Ranger Rover could ever hope to have.

Didn't get to log in for a couple of days but have replaced the front discs and pads and then found most of the front end bushes, arms etc a bit on the wobbly side so have ordered the lot and will be replacing next week. Previously had a bit of wobble but had put it down to the warped discs but guess it was more than that.

Also found a radio wiring harness for vehicles with DSP that might still allow me to fit my head unit. Will let you know how that goes at the weekend with any luck.

In the excitement of passing the mot I forgot to mention earlier that I dropped off my sport bumpers at the bodyshop to have some lovely shiny green paint put on them. :-D

Picked them up earlier and they're shiny and green! I'm now paranoid as I have two freshly painted bumpers taking up all of the available space in the garage and I don't want them getting scratched as I won't be able to fit them for a week or so. :?

How does this one differ the the stock battery Dan? Is it physically bigger or has more oomph? I may change mine soon.

The battery that was fitted was a Bosch Silver, but only a standard car size with 620 power IIRC

The Yuasa is much bigger, fills the whole battery compartment and has more power etc

The first start was a noticeable difference, it just started with ease. Nowt up with the Bosch I've removed, done it for peace of mind etc, more so with the long drive we've got ahead of us on Sunday and the week spent driving around cold Scotland!

Car snow foamed, washed, rinsed, washed again, wheels scrubbed, rinsed, car towel dried, all glass cleaned inside and out with Autoglym Fast Glass (very impressed with this), bonnet, boot lid, tops of doors and wings and the roof all machine polished with Megs Swirl Remover, interior hoovered, sprayed with Autoglym Autofresh and done...

Hey!  it's nice to see you get some decent weather for titivation, I've only got to think about fetching some hot water and it rains.

I've had to give my hard earned luca to the local east european hand wash specialists! at 5 quid a go

Well the forecast for us today was snow all afternoon...

It's been cold, windy and some serious black clouds looming, but not a drop of anything... So just took advantage!

Replaced a blown brake bulb and took back to ecp the Bosch wipers I bought in December as they started squeaking, they replaced them with no fuss but guess what THEY SQUEAK as well , think Bosch quality has taken a nose dive, and chucked in a new air filter

Did what it does best 270miles with family and dog in comfort, style and 42.8mpg.

Thinking it it needs some things ticking off the to do list as a reward.

yesterday removed the front calipers and discs to give the surfaces a bit of a clean, getting a little judder and vibration so thought I’d check that the hub surface had been smoothed when the new disc and pads were fitted and they were fine, have new thrust and control arms sitting on the kitchen table to get get fitted at end of week, glad I ordered them as when I had the front of car jacked up there was a definite side way play on the wheels, and today need to go to sorting office to collect the rear swing arm bushes, will be glad when it’s all done and finished and finally get the 4 wheel alignment done

We had our jaunt up the M6/M74/M80 and A9 yesterday to Dunkeld and the 530i did an average of 33 to the gallon, so not too bad considering its a thirsty petrol usually ;)

Well the beast is in for its mot & the magic bodywork wand!

New front bumper skin

Replacement tailgate

Replacement angel eye lights

Welded rear suspension cracks

Revering light switch

Minor bodywork scratches.

Got to get something done about the consumption though. I’m only getting 15ish round the town! Better on a run, but I dream of 30ish!
