e12 528i Build - Pic heavy!

Recommended Posts

Hello all.
I will start a build thread after meeting a few users on here. Its a 1979 BMW e12 528i Auto.
I bought it in January this year after alot of searching for a good, non rusty e12.
There are plenty of things needing fixing on the car but some of you may know I'm a BMW tech at Bird's so I'll try to get the car back to good order as well as do some tasteful mods.

Anyway some picswhen I bought it..

I have these 18" staggered Style 5s to go on, which I had refurbed then built myself with new bolts...

Fronts 8x18 on 205/40/18
Rears 9x18 on 235/35/18

Work done so far...

Coolant flush and change. Had to unblock some of the smaller hoses and change some pipes and jubilee clips.

New thermostat. Had to drill out one bolt which was missing from the housing.

Engine oil and filter change. Nice clean 10w40.

Check of susp and bushes, etc. Front shocks sticking/noisy.

Check the camshaft for wear, all ok. Check tappets, ok.

Front brakes slightly seized on. New discs and pads all round.

Fitted another fuel tank as it was leaking!

Small rust patch in floor getting repaired by local bodyshop soon.

LHR window wasn't working, so removed door card to find the regulator was seized and had snapped a pivit point from the reg. So welded the reg and unseized the arm. All ok now! BMW wanted £116+VAT for the reg but atleast its still avalible!

RHR window was very slow to move. So removed door card and greased the guides, all ok now.

Central door locking is inop because the LHR motor is missing and LHF is seized!

Elec aerial for radio isn't working/jammed so fitted a new one.

Boot is now locking as it should. The circlip had come out from the barrel, so refitted that.

Pressed number plates fitted.

Secured the battery. The post had snapped so replaced it. Good as new!

Got another key cut in the week as I hate having only one key.

One interior pic...

Suspension is from RPM. Its a GAZ coilover kit which has never been done before.

Removed front struts and dissassemble. Shocks had no oil in them!

Front calipers are seized on slightly. Free off bleed nipples. Ready for caliper overhaul.

Removed the mudflaps and rolled the rear arches.

One shot as it was coming apart. Sorry about the messy workshop!!!...

New cam cover gasket fitted and breather hose.
Also changed the banjo bolt washers and tightened them down!

Pulled the calipers apart today, ready for new seals,etc...

Removed the radio and centre consol. Wiring was a total mess...

And all the wiring that I removed...

Refitted all the interior wiring and fitted a new Sony CD/radio.

Loads more photos if you click on the pics.
Big thanks to Michael from Stanceworks for taking the pics. We spent hours taking snaps so enjoy!!!

Got a photoshoot with Retrorides on Sat morning with the e12 and my M3, so more photos soon!

Car will be SORN'd at the end of Sept. Looking for some 17's for next year as the 18's are too big for me.

Thanks for looking.

Liking that lots! I wonder if 18" rears and 17" fronts might look better balanced, so to speak?

(I've been messing about with wheels on an e24, come to the conclusion that it needs a smaller version of whatever is on the rear fitted to the fronts).

How does it drive lowered with 18"'s?

Looks cool, i rember this car from a while back - did it have a grotty plate on the inner wing?

Yeah thats the one. I'll have a go at tiding the engine bay up over the winter!

I will be selling the 18s soon but it does ride ok. I requested soft springs when GAZ built the kit so the ride is very smooth.

Thanks for the comments.

Good to meet up at Gaydon :-) looking forward to seeing yours on 17s"..

There seem to be a few E12s surfacing at the moment, there's a guy on the BMW Owners Club forum who found a brown one with 30,000 miles on, and another one in the new issue of BMW Car magazine with a handful of miles on too... Soon we'll have enough for a meet B)

An e12 meet sounds like a good idea. Maybe next year at Gaydon we can get a few more together instead of the 2 this year!

Magazine shoot was yesterday but it'll be in Performance BMW not Retrorides.

Hey Ian - long time no speak. How are you?

Loving the choice of car. Old school BM's are where it's at.

Nice choice of wheel but a bit big for the E12 in my eyes though.

Hi!!!! Yeah I'm good thanks. Still at Birds!!!

I'm on the look for some 17"s for it as the 18"s are too big but I had them before I bought the car.

No more pics! :-(

Thats it Ian, I hate you.

Ha ha!

I've seen it earlier this year on RR, cracking car.

Nice colour combo. One of the best examples I've ever seen.

Thanks! The colour is the one thing that sold it for me when I bought it.

This is simply a beautiful car - i hope you don't mind it now being featured on my work desktop ;)

Thanks! Glad you like it. It's my desktop too!!!

Magazine out next month now...

Right, time to start the winter work. First stick it on axle stands at work. Then off with cylinder head for an overhaul...
