Quick one, just seen local breakers has an E36 328 with a decent-looking M-Tech II steering wheel on. Could probably pick it up for cheap. Just some questions:

- How do I remove it from the car, what tools do I need?

- Will it fit my E34, 1995 car with airbag steering wheel. I know I can delete the bulb to stop the airbag warning, but will it actually fit somehow?

From my experience no I don't think it will fit straight on.

I had to transfer the top half of the column along with the wheel to fit the one in my airbag-equipped 540. From memory the airbag wheel is held on with a bolt while the M-tech II uses a nut. That was an E34 to E34 swap though.

EDIT: I've just had a look & mine is actually the earlier M-tech I wheel so the above info may or may not be of any use!

Done some looking around and I think that E36 wheels should fit perfectly, but apparently the horn won't work, and I can't find the solution...

I removed the Sports II Wheel (10th pic down) from my e36 328 and fitted to my 1995 e34 both had air bags

YES! It will certainly fit...

The later E34 (facelift) used the same spline as the E36 so that is the actual one you will need...

The biggst issue you will encounter will be the fact your horn wont work... But I have found a work around for this involving an earth strap that you can pick up from most motor factors :)

When you remove the airbag from your current steering wheel be careful (disconnect your battery) as someone I know set one off by accident whilst removing it... Although this is unlikely but safetly first!

If you have any specific questions then leet me know as I have done exactly what you are about to do :)

Well unfortunately the wheel was gone when I got there.

Awesome Craig, I may PM you if I get hold of one in the near future, cheers!

Thats a shame!

Well aslong as you source an E36 M-Tech 2 wheel then you will be able to fit it... For the older cars it's the E30 item that is needed :)

Is the e36 wheel a lot smaller than the "sport" standard e34 airbag wheel? that's the main reason I'd like to change it..

Hi
I found from experience that there are two sizes of splines 20mm & 25mm and the horn does not work unless you add an earth to it. My 96 E34 has the rarer 25mm. Good luck.
