The old boy turned 60 late last year, and his main present was tickets to the German GP

Rather than flying, we (me and the Bro) thought we'd give give his e60 520i a bit of a run... 2100 miles and 7 days later, we were back home.

Below is a sample of were we went and what we did 8) Hope you enjoy it!

Back seat driving at is best- Satnav on the passenger rear window FTW!
Posted Image

End of day 1- A boring slog down the m74/m6/m1/m25 and m20
Posted Image

Day 2 started with a short Jolly down the m20 to the Channel tunnel- first time any of us had been on it- so lots of pictures were taken
Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

carriages were made by the same lot that make the Glasgow Subway trains..they must be fans of tunnels or something!
Posted Image

We popped out the other side 35 mins later..and decided we should head somwhere good for dinner:

Can you guess where we went?
Posted Image

Yup, the Pistenklaus in Nurburg :-P
Here's the 5er in the carpark
Posted Image

the old boy took enough of a shine to the Warsteiner that we were able to convince him to let my brother take him for a lap of the 'ring..handy how it was open on that day, eh?
This is the car looking moody in the carpark after its run- We've got pics of it heading out on track, but I dont have them here-will try to get them uploaded
Posted Image

Suffice to say, we learned 2 things:
1. The autobox doesnt like the back end of the lap (4km flat out uphill confuses it!)
2. m54b22 + e60 does not a fast car make

however, it was a good time, and there were lots of nice cars to drool over in the carpark..

A nice sedate run to the hotel in Karlsruhe was on the cards- the de-restricted autobahn suits the e60 down to the ground-so easy to lap up the miles..
Posted Image

Splitty! :D
Posted Image

End of day 2_ greeted by police escorting hundreds of rollerbladers down the streets of Karlsruhe- only mildly surreal after lots of driving
Posted Image

Day 3- Wake up and find this in the lobby- whole load of corporate folks staying there- not to mention pirelli girls ;)
Posted Image

A reminder to the Girlfriend that I'm not the only person who keeps car parts in the flat
Posted Image

We were sitting in the innertribune, at the SachsKurve- an awesome view of several corners, and seemed to be a natural place for action
Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Day 4- stumble down to the garage to discover that someone has parked next to us to give their car some Kudos..
Posted Image

Rain and cars..Jagermeister and Warsteiner keep you warm!

Posted Image

Posted Image

Qualifying!

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Day 5- Race Day!

the noise of 24 cars coming along as one train was EPIC! proper good old fashioned screaming, thundering, spitting, popping awesomeness
Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

After the race, time for some track invasion..

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

the shuttle busses were great on the way into the track, but on the way out the traffic meant that they were going nowhere..so we elected to walk the 4km back to the car- 26 degrees, brilliant sunshine and the sound of the GP ringing in our ears..fantastic!

The fastest lotus there
Posted Image

The stands you can see from the autobahn
Posted Image

Posted Image

de-restricted autobahns are not always fast..
Posted Image

this sign cracked me up- very German, not 1500m, but 1450m

Posted Image

The view from our dinner table
Posted Image

The local brew in Karlsruhe was Hoepfner- available both filtered and unfiltered..an extremely pleasant pint and well worth trying!

Day 6- Running for the train!

We spent some time wandering the city, just to see what we could find..

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Time to get a running
Posted Image

Pushing the range as far as we dared on the backroads to Luxembourg
Posted Image

A small cola
Posted Image

Posted Image

Blasting back through Belgium..the only place on the trip that made UK roads seem ok
Posted Image

Oldskool french!
Posted Image

The Joy of British Border Control..such a bunch of uncheery souls!
Posted Image

End of Day 6- Met my mate Gareth and headed to the Diner in Ashford- 50's style dinner at a garden centre surrounded by sheds and hotubs..food were guid!

Posted Image

Day 7- more m20/26/1/6/74 rubbish before arriving home..
Posted Image

A well earned rest for the e60

Just superb..

Great pics and write up.How did the E60 on MPG ?

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you send the wall across the field once youve hit it.

cheers:)

Waiting on the da doing the final fill-up (car doesnt do many miles) but i'd expect it to be circa 33mpg average..seemed to do 34ish on the GB/130kph autoroutes, and 32ish on the Autobahn.. the tank with the ring lap smoked out at 29mpg..

pretty good really

Thanks for that fella, an enjoyable read.

I've heard that a round trip plus tickets to a European GP (Germany, Hungary, Belgium etc) is still cheaper than a race day ticket at Silverstone. True?

Honestly couldn't say,as never been to Silverstone..

Weekend ticket (3days) for 1 was about the same as we spent on gogo juice...

Whatever the cost, it was worth it:)

Nice write up, looks like you were sat right where MSC went off?

We looked at cost of tickets, for just about all the tracks in Europe the tickets are roughly the same price for seats, general entry tickets are cheaper than Silverstone though

No reserved seats, walk in and find a space where you can see the track on a grassy knoll. When I was at Silverstone last year they were walking through the gates at 6am on race day to get a space next to the fence

The reserved seats have different categories too, some covered, some not.

Ok thx.

So a seat in a grandstand in Hockenheim would be the same as a seat in a grandstand in Silverstone?

It's not that much different in price, we found Hungary to be the cheapest on the Euro leg with Spa not that far behind.

Is the price difference between Spa and Silverstone enough to pay for petrol there and back and a Eurotunnel ticket? :) :)

All depends on what type of ticket you want. I had gold ticket on the international pits straight at silverstone last year, when I looked at going to spa I wanted to sit under cover by eau rouge and it was only a little less than silverstone (£350 each for weekend)

Cheers fella,
yeah we saw him plant it bigstyle into the tyres on friday free practice.. I turnde to the german fella beside me and said "Rainmeister?"- we had a right good chuckle

He apepars to have dome the same last friday at hungary too...

Piper, as Dan says, I think the costs are fairly similar. We went for seated tickets with cover (out of the sun, and protected from the rain) with a view of a big screen so you could see what was happening elsewhere.

Dont forget there are GP2 and 3 races plus porsche supercup races too- lots of action!

Also, as for the "cost difference" against silverstone- make it a holiday! there's a whole world out there to go and play in!

also, ferries can be much cheaper than the chunnel- we only took it as the old boy was a railways engineer-so that was the only way to travel

How long did the Calais to Hockenheim leg take?

After having an excellent time last weekend at the 24 Hours of Spa, I'm now mulling over idea of going to the final round of the DTM in October.

Funnily enough we were discussing the same!

calais to Hockenheim would be about 5.5hrs direct, assuming no major stops/deviations (the 'ring etc)

Calais to Spa on Saturday morning was about 3 hours, with one quick stop. Traffic was light though, even around Brussels, so that helped.

Google Maps reckons 405 miles and just over 6 hours to Hockenheimring.

I wasnt that far out:)

if travelling mid day and the brussels ring road is clear then 5.5-6 is doable easily
