Who's V8 has that old knocking sound

22 posts in this topic

Hi guys

Just interested in knowing who else has a V8 with that terrible knock tap tap sound in the top of there motor.

I know it is normal and over the weekend I met up with three other drivers of either 535 or 540 E39s with the same sound. One of them was very noisy, so my question is how many of you guys have the sound or have found a way to get rid of it.

My 535i sports 2000 model has had the chain guide and chain replaced 12,000km ago by the previous owner and it's still there. I have read that if you idle rev the car for 3 minutes at 3000rpm it has help to take away the sound.

I would really like to here your stories of experiences with this issue

Cheers

Addam

Mine has a low vanos rumble once warm - Doesn't bother me, INPA shows that the VANOS is working as it should be and it can only be heard with the bonnet up. Not bad for 143k miles I think?

Mine was slot quieter until last week I replaced the oil and it a bit louder now. Mine can be heard with the bonnet closed just slightly

What grade of oil did you use?

I did my last change 2000 miles ago and used Halfords own brand (LL98 spec) 5w/40 Fully Synthetic (It's produced by Castrol for Halfords IIRC) :)

He used mobil 1 fully synthetic 5w-50 and when i asked why he didnt use 0w40 he said he recommends only 5w50 for queensland climates

He worked for BMW for 14 years and I said okay

Mine had a noticeable heavy rattle on startup for maybe a second (not all the time) and just a slight thud on tickover only heard from the front of the car, I have heard them sounding like a massey and still going strong, I believe someone on here changed there vanos to cure the fault (I think the initial rattle on startup was due to seals losing pressure in the vanos after being sat for a day or 2)

Hey Guys

I was searching through You Tube and found this, Has anyone tried a Engine Flush

The "knock" in the video is going to be noticeably less with new oil than old oil - I'm not sold on engine flush, I would never use it in an engine that's seen a fair few miles as I'd be worried about what it might remove from the oil seals and the like.

Liking that strut brace on the video - Anyone any idea where to get one from (sorry for OT) - Seen plenty of them advertised for the inline 6 engines but not the V8?

Hi hasso

Did you flush your motor?

No it have never been flusched.

But I know it could help sometimes againts ticking lifters as i have friends who tried.

Mine oil is clean and looks nearly like new after 10000 km when I change it every 12 mounth.

Some M62TU engines have vanosnoise or knocking noise some dont why nobody seem to have an explanation fore that and its seems normal.

Both of my 540-01 have a quiet M62TU and my workingfrinds with a 740-98 and a 540/sixspeed touring 01 just like mine but topazblue is also quiet.

Just thought I would add the engine in my 2002 540i is very quiet but then it has only done 70k. I had not heard of this issue before.

This is a email I received back from mobil regarding what oil to run in my car

Hello Addam,

Per below our on-line Oil Recommend Tool, Mobil 1 0W-40 is the best choice

for youe car. And when you feel the engine power get less than B4 or find

lube oil consumption coming up, it's the time to use Mobil 1 5W-50 which is

more suitable for vehicles with high milage. Hope this helps.

Question:

Hi There

I own a BMW e39 535i Sports 2000 Model. I have had my oil changed two times

by two different mechanics on the Gold Coast in Australia. I requested

Mobil one that meets my cars standard request and both times I have had

Mobil one 5w-50 added to my engine and told it was the right oil. But after

lots of studying I have been told Mobil 1 0w-40 is the Oil I should be

using can you please tell me what is right.

Thank you

Addam smith
