'99 BMW M5 and '01 BMW 525d Touring

Recommended Posts

Nice selection you have at your gaff! What wheels are on the black one? They look different?

It's actually green, not black :) ... They are not very nice, when you look at them directly. Some cheap knock-off of something, but 17". Going to be replaced in the next weeks.

The tint has also been removed since the picture has been taken and the paintjob is going to be taken care of next week. The car itself has a very decent spec: rear pdc, white/creme leather, aircon, tyre pressure control, fog lights front/rear, xenons, multifunction wheel, cruise control, etc. and is a '98 525tds.

Ok. The Touring had to go back to the garage, as it turned out that the rail under the manifold was leaking diesel .. majorly :( I then got it back today (sunday) and took it immidiatly for a spin with the local bmw forum :)

A wash does get all the good out of'em.

Just need to fix the rear whiper now (whiper motor is actually missing .. i mean .. missing !!) and fix the paintjob.

Hi Marlow,

Nice partnering of a Touring and an M5 !

I notice that you've gone ahead and ordered those LED touring rear light kit from ebay/German seller - could you please post up some close up shots of how they look when on etc please? I asked the seller but he sent through such a low resolution picture it's hard to tell. I've even toyed with the idea of getting the smoked versions to better tie in with my Touring White with Black highlights theme.

I've seen one Japan red E39 thats been done up very very nicely with Sport bumpers, 18 or 19 inch wheels, M Mirrors and Sport interior and de-chrome etc and it looked awesome, longer term is that something you're looking to do with your Touring?

Cheers, Dennis!

I was toying with the idea of replacing it with a 530d, that had a better spec, but after driving one yesterday and due to the fact that I stumbled over the bits I otherwise wanted, I'm probably going to keep the red one.

So the plans are:

- black leather interiour with sports seats in the front (picking it up on saturday)

- silver trim instead of the fake wood trim (picking it up on saturday)

- new paint job (currently being done)

- remap

- msport suspension upgrade

- m bumpers maybe at some stage

I'm not sure, if I'm going for 18" alloys. I might be at some point, but the roads are so bad here and it's going to be my daily driver, so I'll just end up wrecking them I'm afraid.

As for the LED lights, I don't know about the smoked ones. I didn't like them on the M5 and thus replaced them with red/black instead.

The car is in the bodyshop now, but I can take a few shots of the Touring lights once it comes back. I've got a 10 mpix camera, so they should be pretty high res. They made a huge difference to the car alright.

Marlow, what's all the stickers in the windscreen of your touring for? Is it MOT stuff?

Heh. They aren't stickers. In Ireland (similar to the UK) we have to show NCT (MOT), but also insurance and motor tax in the window. Takes up a load of space.

Oh, and in regard to progress. Was in the paint shop today to see, what stage the car is at. It's all wrapped up and ready for painting:

39494_421444003681_698008681_4936226_5581720_n.jpg

Got so many bloody dents, that all bar the roof has to be re-painted. The laquer also was peeling off all over the place. Issue is, that somebody has tried to fix the paintjob at some point and used the wrong paint with the wrong laquer, so it's all a big mess.

Hi Marlow!

The paint job and result are looking great!

I've already modified your car in my mind ! - 19 inch wheels, a little lower, sport front/rear bumpers, dechromed and a twin exit tailpipe exhaust!

Could you possibly get pics of the rear LED lights in the dark as well please? also with the brake pedal pressed to light up the lower half of the sides, and the rear foglamps? - the configuration of the lights is different so just trying to imagine how they look.

Any interior shots? seems as though you've already picked up a sport interior! I have steering wheels and spare trim sets too! I've done other mods on your car in my mind as well!

Looking forward to watching your project unfold :) - keep a lookout for some of the bits I'll be doing on mine .. ;)

Cheers, Dennis!

This is the current interior:

I've got silver trim and leather seats sorted. Picking them up tomorrow. Still need to find a M-Sport Steering wheel, but it has to be the facelift one. Shots of the rear lights come, but it has to get dark first :)

It's not easy to capture the way the lights look in the dark, but here you go:

Rear lights:

Rear lights with brakes (both LED):

Rear lights with fogs (both LED):

Collected the leather seats and the metal trim today. The door sides and a few other bits I'm getting next weekend.

I also located a complete touring msport suspension (from a 2003 msport at a breaker) and the "M" door trims. Getting them next week hopefully, too.

These are the front seats that are going in:

39362_422127638681_698008681_4954334_7698721_n.jpg

I have matching rear seats as part of the deal.

Downside with these seats: they don't have the electrical lumbar support, which I have in my cloth ones and they have no seat heating.

I've been looking at forums and at how the seats are put together and it seems, it's definatly easy to transfer the lumbar support. Transferring the seat heating might be a bit more challenging.

Car looks superb post paint mate. Was going to say the interior let's it down, but your all over that like a rash! A fr trying to install heating elements, it can be done but it's not cheap, unless you want to destroy your current seats. I'll find sone linkage.

Well, it's the plan to take my current seats apart to get the heating transferred. I've found pictures on the lumbar support and that seams easy. I'm still looking for a decent viewpoint for the heating element swap.

Yes. I've seen that one alright. Doesn't tell much about how to split the seats. I've however already taking the back piece off one of the seats and it could be easy enough.

Great thing is, that I don't need buttons etc. as it's all in mine already.

Well,

this is the car empty:

39859_422437878681_698008681_4963059_5059312_n.jpg

And the leather seats fit:

40502_422439738681_698008681_4963063_640109_n.jpg

40502_422439748681_698008681_4963064_2520993_n.jpg

I didn't move the lumbar support and the seat heating, as the seat heating was stitched in and it also was quite difficult to get the lumbar support out of the old seats and in to the new ones.

I have however transferred the full wiring and controls, so that I can get somebody professional to retrofit seat heating and lumbar support then.

Nothing worse than a half arsed paint job.

Looking very good.

You done the interior trim yet?.

I've got the same interior as you currently and have been tinkering with the idea of interior trim in silver.

I have the silver trim in the M5 and I quite like it. I haven't done the trim in the Touring yet, because I'm missing some clips and screws (which should arrive tomorrow) and the door sides (which I'm collecting on Saturday).

Nothing worse than a half arsed paint job.

Yeah, but well, that's history now and it's all freshly painted.

Couple updates again.

Collected the sports suspension, the door cards, m-sport doortrim, the headliner and managed to get a (post-facelift) m-sport multifunction steering wheel on saturday.

41076_424526588681_698008681_5013569_5536072_n.jpg

The airbags are a bit smaller than the normal ones and obvious shocks and springs are different.

46110_424525738681_698008681_5013518_6030882_n.jpg

The nice bonus is, that there are rolling curtains in the rear door cards.

46110_424525748681_698008681_5013520_7553079_n.jpg

This is my current headliner

46110_424525753681_698008681_5013521_1204848_n.jpg

And this is going in now:

46110_424525758681_698008681_5013522_3944494_n.jpg

A small mod was to replace the rear compartment in the center console with cup-holders.

Before:

41076_424526573681_698008681_5013566_5465650_n.jpg

After:

41076_424526583681_698008681_5013568_6036183_n.jpg

Dropped the car back to the garage yesterday to get the suspension fit.

Also the spare clips to replace bust ones arrived, so I can finally fit the silver trim.

Got the Touring back from the garage yesterday, now with rear whiper fixed and msport suspension fit.

I just can't believe the difference. Instead of floating and being tail-happy, it handles like a sports saloon now. There is VERY LITTLE left of the feeling, that it's actually a Touring. I absolutely love it. Best investment of the whole process, for sure.

The ultimate test for the Msport suspension this weekend: Mondello Track Day :)

58583_431070238681_698008681_5176080_2429437_n.jpg

47435_431076483681_698008681_5176160_1826682_n.jpg

The car was handling seriously well around the track.

Unfortunatly for me, about 30 kms away from the track on my way home, my exhaust pipe then broke. Sounded like an 18-wheeler :)

Got that fixed today, it broke at the top of the manifold.

58407_431062588681_698008681_5175955_771452_n.jpg

Nothing like a track day to show the weak spots of a car. I've also recently had issues with the EGR Valve, which were sorted cleaning it and the EGR bypass pipe is ordered.

Hi enjoyed your posts and interested in your views at the benefits of the sport suspension. I have the sport tourer and find it a little low as it plays havoc with speed bumps!
