Should I risk updating Maps again

Recommended Posts

HI All,

I've just downloaded and copied to USB the latest maps available for my car via the BMW Download Manager (Europe Next 2019-1).

When I brought my car last Jan, the maps were still from 2013 (year of the car), so I updated them.

After the update had finished, it seemed to put the Head Unit in a constant restart cycle.

BMW wanted me to pay for a new Head unit (£1500 ish). I ended up getting it repaired by a local BMW specialist.

I read at the time (after my issue though!), that a few other cars similar age to mine, the early NBTs had the same problem upgrading to the 2018 maps.

Has anyone who had an issue with 2018 attempted to upgrade to 2019? If so, was it succesful?

Anyone else - is it worth me doing it. I do need the map updates, and it is running 2018 perfectly after it was fixed by the specialist. I'm thinking that the issue won't occur again because I've already got the 2018 working..

I'd appreciate some advice!

Thanks very much!

Craig

I updated my maps to 2019 on my NBT no problem. It could be that you just had an issue with your head unit. Normally updating wouldn't cause issues unless the software is bad. I used the software that was supplied by Matthew Ashton. It updated fine. Sometimes if you get the software from other places like torrent sites etc you may get some bad or incomplete file.

From what I remember, I think a few people with a similar age car to mine had the same issue when updating. I know that normally it shouldn't cause an issue. The software I used was downloaded direct from BMW as I purchased the 2 year license and downloaded via their download manager.

Perhaps someone else on here can remember or advise.

As you're now running 2018 maps this won't apply. However it may help others. Shamelessly borrowed from this site, here goes:

Please check if you have an "i" letter on your current maps as shown on the picture below:

CIC_Firmware_New_large.jpg?v=1494710601

If you don't have "i" letter on your current maps it means your firmware is old and the unit is not able to take USB update without updating the firmware. If your vehicle was built between 09/2009-03/2010 and you have the factory firmware you will need a firmware update to update using USB due to a bug in the firmware. You are welcome to try, however the update will most likely fail at 93.7% and abort updating.

@inkiboo had something that sounds similar - the pre-2014 firmware can't handle the latest 3D maps or something.

This sounds like the issue I had. So, seeing as I am now on the latest firmware (I'd have thought as part of my local specialist fixing it), and am running 2018 with no issues, I 'should' be ok to update to 2019 as it will handle it. Correct?

In my opinion, correct. Remember though, these updates are to mapping only. They add new streets & correct geographical features/databases only. There's no big revolutionary firmware update or anything like that, so if that's what you need, and you're already running 2018 maps, go for it. Chances of it going awry again are slim to none. Do you have (and use) the glovebox USB port for updates?

Thats right, I just want to use the latest maps as I've paid for a 2 year subscription from BMW.

I downloaded them through the BMW Download Manager and received the code via email.

I have a USB port in the centre console bit for the updates.

Being a 2013 car I would have thought you had & were supposed to use the glovebox USB. I know they did away with it in 2014, though.

I'd have a job to do it in the glovebox, as I don't have a USB in there :). haha.

Just under the lid in the centre console for me...

Production date of the car was June 2013 I believe...

No, mine is the small screen nav.

So would it be the pro sat nav which I have which is why the USB is in the centre console?

When was the face lift?

Has BMW fixed the chronic RTTI issues yet does anybody know. This was well documented some while back and I was not going to update my maps until it was fixed?

I wouldn't know, mine hasn't got it. Does anyone if I can do?

So there is no chance mine is based on that.

I'm going to give the map update a try. I'm going to brave it. Haha

What were the issues? I have RTTi and the latest 2019-1 maps.

Quite simply, it was the RTTI (coloured lines that follow the road on the map) system missing from many roads, so, the whole system was useless. It was well reported a couple of months back Andy.
