E60 Petrol engine buying advice

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

After a break from BMW I'm looking to get myself back in a 5 series. I've had an E34 and an E39 so natural progression leads me to look for an E60.

I'm after a petrol, sport, touring. I used to have a 540ia Sport and would love that sort of power again. I think this leaves me with the choice of 530 or more appealingly a 550.

My budget is around £8k and I'd expect something around 2006-2007 year for that money.

Any advice or pointers on engines and spec would be greatly appreciated, especially with regards to a 550...

Thanks

Matt

I was looking at E61 550i's or the 750i land barges and in all honesty; the stories of the valve stem oil seals rebuilds and bills are what put me off in the end; c£3k if you're lucky etc

Other than that; it's the usual. Check for oil leaks, make sure they've got solid service history with bills/paperwork to show and check the MOT history too etc. These cars tend to not rust anywhere near as bad as the E39 did; so that's a major plus point. The tourings lid can suffer wiring issues, where it wears in the hinges and it needs sorting out properly etc

There are a few 550i cars for sale currently; there's one in Wales that I'd personally stay clear of. The owner comes across as a complete knobber; doesn't know what he's talking about and the car is not anywhere near in as good a condition he says it is. It can be found on a certain auction webshite!

There are other 550i's out there for sale too; but IMO stupidly overpriced, typical dealers trying it on. They won't have more than £5k in the car etc

The only E61 tourings I test drove were the 530i ones and I really liked them; the newer version of the M54 (N52 IIRC) and they drove really well; just a shame they were poverty spec otherwise I'd have probably bought one and not be in my current 730D!

IMO this looks a nice motor:

If it was for sale when I was looking; I'd now own it I'd say

A bit overpriced; I think so, but cash is king etc ;)

Thanks guys, I think the 530 would be plentiful in reality. Do I need to be looking for an E61 as opposed to an E60? Is this when it became the LCI engine?

No; the E61 is the touring, the E60 the saloon

You'd mentioned a touring in your post; so that's why I linked to that touring specifically ;)

Personally; with your budget, you're in LCI territory, so I'd stay with those. Get as many toys as you can (heated seats, memory seats, Bluetooth, aux-in, nav etc)

Ahh I get it now! Thank you!

That touring is lovely, and not too far from me, but the lighter interior might not be suited to my 3 year old plus baby due next month...?!

It'll be easy to clean ;) Just keep on top of it and it'll be fine

There's always the boot for child storage

The fleabay E61 link is pre LCI (before March 2007, 57 plate). Engine likely to be N52. Post LCI models moved to the N53 (also direct injection) engine. I find mine (due to direct injection) to have a noisier idle and has a far more complex multi mode operation of mixture and timing but up side is that the emissions fall into the lower tax band for ~270bhp with a lighter lump. Ain't no 4.8 v8 though.

For £8k I'd want a good 2009 530i with ~100k miles but be prepared to wait months to find 'the one'.
For a couple of grand more, there's a 550i E61 Touring manual out there today . (now that config is rare!)

Anyway, I posted some links to general E60/E61 info in this recent thread here.

Hmmm, the more I look at the ad the more I like it actually. The panoramic roof is a big draw I have to say. I might give then a call...

For 8k you are just getting into F10 territory

Emphasis on the word just...

There's not many out there with the right engine and spec for £8k, if at all.

I looked and looked; a lot of high mileage 520Ds but that was about it really... Rep mobile central

The M Sport tourer certainly looks the business, but would that be the original upholstery as I have never before seen that combination of  paintwork and leather in those colours on any car?    They don't seem to compliment each other very well, although it's all down to individual tastes I suppose.

I have a 2004 E60 with the M54 3 litre engine. Recently I had all the crankcase vent system replaced due to blockages, but... it now has 235,000+ on the clock with no problems. After that replacement, I measured the fuel consumption on the way home. Mostly 70mph but with some slower sections around the A14 work on the A1.

39.7 mpg! Not bad for a 3 -litre automatic.

Having owned an N62 engined E60, it's a peach when it's on full chat. Smooth, powerful, great response, with a great bellow, no such thing as no overtaking in a V8 E60!

But it's not without its problems. Oil likes to seep out of literally every single joint or gasket in the engine. There is a very peculiar leak from the alternator bracket that requires the engine to be lifted to allow you to get to it. Valve stem oil seals are indicated by an oily smell to the exhaust.

I would go for a well proven 6 pot petrol with a manual box in a saloon for the most reliability.

I spoke to the dealer today, its individual spec interior so it may be the only one like it!

Yes, that's a very nice looking car. :)

Its in indeed but that's a large wad for a what is a 12 year old car.

The previous owner would would have been lucky to see anywhere near half that on trade in.

+1 Agreed.

Try n beat that price down which might be hard as it looks like that seller specialises in these good condition 10-15 year old style BMWs, better if you could view a few. I'd start at sub 6k ;), walk away then see what gives a few days later. Haggle hard, these 12 year old motors won't be flying out the door unless you are unlucky.

Good luck, nice steering wheel though B).

It shall be mine!

I was amazed by the car and its condition. The lengths the garage go to in their preparation is beyond expectations. I've never seen anything quite like to if I'm honest!
