E39 M5 Wheel refurb and full body respray - recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I feel like I am asking shed loads at the moment.  I am restoring my E39 M5 and she is with Darren Wood at the moment getting mechanical's, MOT and service done.  The next up are the wheels and a respray, I live in the South Manchester area and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a wheel refurbishment company, I had them done about 5 years ago but I spotted a few blemishes on two of the wheel and asked for these to be corrected only to find that the two that were corrected were then different to the two without blemishes (this was done by Prestige Wheels), I am reluctant to use them again and would welcome your recommendations.

Next up will be a full respray and freshen up of the black rubbers and plastics, could anyone recommend an exceptional bodyshop please in or around South Manchester?

Once this is done I need to replace the rear view mirror glass and get her detailed.  i will post photos as this work is being done hopefully with before and after shots.  Can't wait to get her back into tip top condition, not that shes bad now of course.

Was it Rimfurbish in West Bromwich who did an E39 M5 a few years ago and a detailed thread was on the WWW somewhere.

They don't do general public now I don't think but not sure if they check. They may just ask the question.

Rimfurbish or Lepsons would be my first ports of call (may mean finding a spare set for a few weeks and abit of postage but worth it for the finish which you'll be living with for a while)

I have just had my wheels done at leptons and there work is second to none personally I would not have my wheels done anywhere else. They do get the shadow chrome right and no orange peel like I had on my previous refurbishment done at dips London.

Lepsons (Gillingham) or Chris at exel wheels: http://www.exelwheels.co.uk/

The beauty with exel is that Chris will come to you with a set of loan wheels. I've had a couple of sets done now and his work is as good as it comes. A little more expensive but the quality of the refurb will not be bettered.

I'd be interested in how much you're quoted for a respray... it's on the cards for mine at some point, although I want to make sure all the mechanical elements are sorted first.

Had a set of M5 wheels done in original Shadow Chrome at Lepsons and BJV Engineering and both spot on - maybe wrong end of country for you though.

Don't know any good bodyshops your way, but can definitely not recommend Oxfordshire Crash Repairs - see my M5 thread for the bodged repair I found in the sill recently.

Not exactly local; but not too far away either

For wheels; I'd recommend Stevie at Wheelrite, Chorley: http://www.wheelrite.co.uk/

For bodywork; I'd speak to Aaron at Croker Autos in Preston (bodywork specialists). No website, but Google their name and it'll bring up their details. They do very good work there, not the cheapest, but their end product is superb!

I don't mind putting my car up on axle stands for a bit to send them off to get my wheels done properly.  Still looking for a good bodyshop though, Preston is too far unfortunately.

I asked about refurbishing on the M5 board recently...

Gloucestershire may be a bit off your radar but definitely closer than Lepsons...

Those shown on M5Board are too blue, too light and nowhere near factory finish. Awful job!

Shadowchrome done correctly is a great look. I had mine done by SEM many years ago and they replicated the OEM finish perfectly. From memory the base coat is Black.

The Wheel Specialist have branches across the country and have good reviews, at least a couple of the local branches down south.

Spit & Polish do a pick up & drop off service and usually take about a week turnaround.

The Autowerks in Slough, Berkshire - not sure if they do a pickup/drop-off service but do wheel refurbs customers who bring cars/have them delivered direct from the showroom, sometimes without any miles on the odometer. They're reported to have the best CNC lathe in the business.

Some really strong opinions on Wheel finish but I agree with Cableguy they should be Shadow Chrome which is a black base layer.
