F11 Bump stops disintegrated

Recommended Posts

My f11 makes a creaky/hollow noise occasionally when it goes over big bumps

I was changing my wheels when I noticed the rear gaiter is non existent and the bump stops are crumbling in to nothing

Would these in this condition cause a noise or are the shocks likely to be knackered too?

Cheers

Might have been caused or made worse if it was driven longer than it should with no air in its rear springs so all the weight is in the bump stops.

To replace the bump stop the shock would need to come out so you can check if the shock is ok or not. It should extend smoothly itself as they are gas pressurised and you should be able to contract it easily and smoothly by hand.

When it's out you can inspect the rubber mounts for wear too.

Cheers, doesn't look too difficult so I think I will diy

Is there any where in particular I should buy the bump stops from or just ebay like this : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ss32-For-BMW-5-F11-525d-218HP-16-Rear-Shock-Absorber-Dust-Cover-Bump-Stop-Kit/372268682737?hash=item56acf14df1:g:7pcAAOSw6VRZ5eEI

For something like that I would buy genuine. Try Cotswolds for a quote.

Newtis is your friend for a diy guide.

Enter last 7 digits of your chassis number and look up rear shock replacement.

I removed the rear shock from my E60 to replace the spring, bump stop and Spring seat. Quite straightforward fit.

Boge/Sachs are fine. However, SE & Msport model have different bump stop.

Worth having a look at your load cover in the boot too.  I spent about 6 hours trying to figure out where the creak was coming from when I went over big bumps.  Turns out it was the retractable load cover squeezing slightly when it was fully extended and moved enough over a bump!!
