Some BMW parts prices have gone through the roof!

Recommended Posts

I've been messing around with old BMWs for over 10 years now, mostly E34s.  In that time I have bought a lot of genuine BMW bits and pieces - used where practical, new if not.  I used to buy from Cotswold, BMMiniparts.com and sometimes eBay.

Then things changed.  BMMiniparts could no longer supply parts unless they have them in stock already, as BMW dealers were no longer allowed to sell to them.  Cotswold continue to offer a discount to Forum members, but even with that, prices have gone skyward.  I wanted to buy 8 small instrument cluster bulbs, and thought while I'm there, I would replace the holders for the three main ones.  I got a quote, which even after discount came to over £70.  £70.  Tor 8 bulbs and three holders.  A few years ago, this might have come to £20 odd, if that.  After scouring eBay, I managed to get it all for £33 odd - which I still consider to be VERY expensive.  It has now become profitable enough to sell these bulbs USED on eBay now FFS - USED BULBS.  Let that sink in!

This sort of profiteering is bad enough when you drive a modern BMW - but for those of us keeping more marginal cars on the road, this is not good news at all.

For those of you scrapping older BMWs for spares - it is now worthwhile stripping out pretty much everything it seems.  It all has a value....

One of the reasons I sold my E36 was the price going up 4 fold on a lot of parts overnight, the £7 window seal went to £28 as an example.

My E61 3rd brake light can be found on Cotswolds page last year for £80, now £130 :(

I think you're forgetting that BMW is a european company and the pound is worth less in europe since brexit. As such parts will cost more once converted to pounds.

That doesn’t account for more than a fraction of this price inflation Duncan.  It’s gone nuts out there.

Similar thing happened with old ford parts bout 10 years ago, could pick a cosworth engine up for less than a grand, I’ve still got a shed load of mk1 Sierra stuff, I think I’ll use it as my retirement fund ;)

On another note, BMW are practically giving away aerosol paint cans now, 4 quid a pop.

Where?

It's been said before, but BMW know how to charge.

Still not as bad as their pricing in the 1970's and 80's though, which lead to an up sturge in BMW breakers, and independant bmw specialist garages, Total BMW mag used to feature one every month.

Mark, what bulbs are these? The ones listed here, by any chance?

Also, for wedge-fit bulbs:

Might be worth getting a few - IIRC they're the ones that go in the clock/OBC and other places. I'm sitting looking at a packet of three I bought for the Ka (that'll never get fitted now) as I write.

For example, these are the ones fitted to the corona rings on an E60 (just had to buy some for mine).
