What Are These Protrusions?

What are they for?

Unscrew the black plastic retainers and see what's behind there ;)

If I do that it's all likely to not go back as it should do!

Remember one of the under bosses in the yakuza used to own that car so my guess would be the one on the left is for a Uzi and a spare clip and the one on the right you could probably fit about 10-12 kilo’s of cocaine in.

I mean what else could they be fore....

;)

No idea yet. Obviously not 'normal' because no one else has come up with an alternative.

Was just listening to your latest 'what are you listening to' offerings. You have good taste.

Japanese market E39’s had the radio and video modules fitted there.

Huh that's weird. I've seen the odd nav drive position before, but didnt know about the modules. Any idea why? Is there something in the way in the usual spot for all the modules and drives?

Think it is something to do with the higher temperatures in Japan.

Also, they normally come with a Navi j  sat Nav which only works in Japan.

I relocated mine to the European location in the near side rear quarter panel using a mark 3 unit but left the TV & radio behind the seat

Plenty of other hot countries with all the boot electronics in the LH side with no issues.

I’ve always believed it was done to create additional width in the boot so the Golf mad Japanese could get more/bigger Golf bags in.

So, was this purely for Japan only do you know?

Interesting. Wonder if this is also why (according to the parts catalogue) Japan cars have a different right hand corner boot trim without the storage bin? Even more boot width!

Yes, although a lot of other markets got that right hand trim panel - the U.S.A. for starters.

The JDM cars use a certain amount of japanese produced parts to comply with japanese local content laws/taxes etc.

I don't know what all the parts are, but the nav systems etc are japaense sourced for their market, and some models use japanese made transmissions - certainly the JDM E36 6 cylinder variants used a Jatco transmission, as did (some?) JDM Pre-facelift E39's - not sure about facelifts.

Some of it may be entriely for packaging reasons, to fit the stuff in.
