540i Exhaust Mod Options

Recommended Posts

Took the car to a local exhaust specialist today to get ideas and suggestions on how to extract just a little more V8 rumble from the exhaust note. With the car up on the four poster it was suggested that to keep it subtle, but noticeable, delete the last muffler in the back box system and straight pipe it from the box in the foreground.

Has anyone here done this to their 540?20180512_140249_HDR.jpg.13b7da8c317ced9cfa9f1aa3eea894cd.jpg

Muffler delete...

Everyone with a V8 E39 has done this... ;)  Very common operation and you can have a tailpipe of your choice then too

I'd go for it as every E39 V8 I've seen this done on, sounds great and looks better, but it's not an OTT 'in yer face' noice

Youtube > E39 540i muffler delete > sit back and enjoy ;)

Thanks for your comment Dan. I didn't actually realise that there were two separate boxes. The first a sort of 'dead end' with the second being the last and exiting to the tail pipe. I assumed that the term 'back box delete' meant removing both boxes, not just the last of the two. We're thinking that take the last one off initially and if that doesn't have the desired result, the first one can then be removed as well.

The ‘scuba tank’ back box needs to be removed but leave the mid silencer in situ imo otherwise it’ll be too loud and will drone

Ive seen some 540i E39s with a standard box as well as that scuba style box, but a muffler delete means just that, ‘straight pipe from mid silencer

Scuba tank, in other words both of those in my photo, gotcha now.

Do you think that by just removing the last of the pair there won't be much difference? As I originally said above, could try one first, then the second if necessary.

And, as per your comment, their advice was not to remove the mid 'Y' piece silencer section either.

Remove both, straight pipe from the mid pipe to a nice exhaust tip of your choice and that's it done :)

Lots of pics and ideas here: https://www.google.co.uk/search?safe=off&hl=en&authuser=0&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=2048&bih=952&ei=f_33WqfyCoeasAeR2b_oCw&q=bmw+e39+540i+muffler+delete&oq=bmw+e39+540i+muffl&gs_l=img.3.1.0i24k1l2.1368.5061.0.7293.19.14.0.5.5.0.146.869.11j2.13.0..2..0...1ac.1.64.img..1.18.876.0..0j35i39k1.0.FlwTL5GB0_k

Thanks for the link Dan. Yes, removing both at the back would be the simplest way, just a little concerned that it would be too loud, hence considering removing the second of the two first.

Impossible to know until it's done. Decisions, decisions....

Have a look on Youtube for videos :)

If you remove the mid pipe silencer it'll be too much IMO; the rear boxes off will give you a good burble.

You could also go for a custom back box, but that'll cost you c£250/£300 IMO

If be very interested to find out what it's like with just the one rear silencer removed. I think the dead-end one is a resonator, so leaving it on may reduce the tendency to drone a bit a certain rpms.

Easy to get the second removed later if it's a bit tame with just one gone, although extra expense.

Also - hang on to any bits you take off.

No, the centre box is staying, that's for certain. Just a case of whether I experiment with removing one 'scuba' first, then the second if required.

Yes, I'll be keeping all that's removed in case I need to reverse the mod at any point.

TBH I don't think it'd make much difference, they're there to silence and stop resonation etc

IMO that's why custom back boxes are better, they can  be made to specs but also the sound can be managed as well by adding or removing the silencing materials etc

I'd speak to some custom exhaust fabricators local to you before deciding

I’ve got a exhaust straight pipe that the previous owner of my car had made up, mine has a twin tip on and no plans to change it tbh

if you’d be interested in the part (it’s new and unused and looks stock sport tip style on appearance)

let me know via pm and I’ll forward you some pics etc
