Just bought a 540i - Awesome!!

Recommended Posts

Sold the 523 sooner than expected because this came up for sale. Had to have it. Been looking for a 540 with high spec for a while and I prefer the SE.

Will report on its progress!

Comfort Seats

Heated Seats

Sunroof

Double Glazing

BMW phone

Msport suspension

Canyonrot red - Love it!

Well done, thats a very tasty motor.

Any jobs you arr planning to do on it?any pros cons?

Pros, took it for a 250 mile trip to a meeting straight away. Didn't break down! Also got 30mpg. 65-70mph with a good number of blasts out of roundabouts down the A303. I'll ignore MPG now as I know its going to drink fuel, was just interested in what it can get. Super smooth drive compared to my 523, double glazing does make a difference.

Cons, paintwork it actually a bit scruffy. Needs a full on detail. the famous 540 steering is a little odd, but better than I thought. Seems to be a lot of fan noise compared to the straight 6. Going to get it serviced and see what it needs.

Not going to do any mods, I'm into originality. So much so that the Sport wheels do bother me a bit BUT, they look so damn good! I'll probably keep them. Want to get the BMW phone working as well.

Looks a lovely car; congrats ;)

Heated seats too... Jammy sod

I know! Why were E39s rarely specced with heated seats? And I notice E38s, 740s etc hardly any had heated seats. Strange!

Yeah; all the E38 740s I looked at didn't have heated seats, some of the 728i Sports did, but they needed to much TLC

My previous 530i had heated seats... Stupid of me to sell it really

Keep the Style 37s on your 540i, they suit it well IMO. But if you want all out comfort, you'll not get better than the 16" Turbines with balloon sized tyres on them ;)

Have you thought about changing the steering wheel though, that's the wheel I had in my E38 and they're bus-sized

I can second the Turbines. My 523i is on the Style 49's with the Sport suspension - my touring is SE suspension and turbines and the ride quality is night and day in terms of comfort on rough roads!

Think I will keep the wheels on it. I like the stance it has. Might give it the shadowline treatment at some stage, although the chrome does look good with the red.

I know what you mean about the steering wheel, but I actually like it. Its original and theres something I like about the thinner, larger wheel on an older SE car, it seems to fit.

Love the old screen as well. Bought an FM transmitter to get bluetooth music and phone. They have come a long way since I last used one maybe 10 years ago. Great solution for an older car if you want to keep the original stereo.

When I went from my Turbines and winter tyres to my current 19" alloys & tyres; I did wonder for the first few days whether it was the right move

I'm used to the ride now and must say; it's still uber comfy even with firm-set coilovers and 19" alloys with rubber band tyres ;)

Yeah; know what you're saying

Had that wheel in my E38 and I liked it, but test drove a few 528i's with that wheel and it just felt too big, but at least I could see the speedo clearly

The cars I had for the longest time were 330i Msport Tourings with 18s and sport suspension so anything is comfy for me!

I missed out on this 2 years ago and still gutted about it. The 2nd bargain I missed in Ireland.

That's a really nice looking car... well done. I've always been keen on a dark (but not black) exterior with light leather. My 525D has a grey leather interior but I prefer the beige of yours. Same woody finish as mine. Some folks say mine looks like a mobile living room... meant as a mick take but in truth with the interior size and comfort plus overall ride/refinement it's not far off.

I love my sand beige interior with vavona wood trim; suits it down to a tee IMO. More so with it being sapphire black!

However, I wouldn't mind a Champagne interior, dark dash and light leather trim etc ;)

I didn't realise heated seats were a rarity! I must have been lucky as three out the four e39's I've owned had heated seats. Very nice motor by the way OP,  that colour is awesome! :)

Quick question. My SE has the MSport suspension as an option. The previous owner fitted the M Parallels, so am I right in thinking theres no difference mechanically now between my SE and an MSport? Its just cosmetic differences?

Also, are Michelin Pilot Sports the tyre of choice? They were on my 330i Msport.

Re suspension, I think you're right, but is it the Mtec II suspension you're running? Probably best to do a VIN check to see your full spec

Re tyres; a personal choice really

Personally, i've no time for Michelin tyres, too pricy and not always that good. I'm running Uniroyal RainSport 3s currently and find them to be super; also really highly rate Vredestein Ultrac Vorti tyres

Taking the car for a service with a BMW specialist. I’ll ask them to check it. Feels very planted in the corners.
