Sport Seats Uncomfortable

Recommended Posts

Hi,

New to the forum and only on here to attempt to find a solution to an ongoing comfort problem with my 530D MSport. I've driven the 5 series diesel since 1994 - my previous one was the E60 - and never any issues with comfort. Unfortunately, the sports seats of the G30 are proving intolerable, well the driver's seat is anyway. I've tried adjusting height, tilt etc. but after 6 months (& 7000 miles) still no better. It seems to be the right edge of the seat annoying my right thigh to the point of 'frozen leg syndrome'. I've concluded that the accelerator pedal is too far to the right of the seat!!! Is this because the cabin is designed primarily for LHD?

Anyway, given that the sport seat design is too firm for my liking, I'm considering swapping to a more comfortable version. Is this even possible? The current seat is Anthracite, electrical adjustment but not memory. And, if I can find an alternative, will the material still match the interior trim?

Any assistance on this most appreciated as I'm nearing my wit's end.

Silly question, do you drive with your wallet in you RH back pocket? I get the same discomfort you describe on journeys over about about 30 mins. If I take my wallet out of my pocket, no discomfort. (no I'm not rich and have a fat wallet!) This is a common problem that physios come across

Thanks for the reply, Stressed.

No, it's more a case of the side support impeding my right leg as I operate the accelerator. I've actually sat in the car and experimented - when my right foot is on the brake pedal the seat feels perfectly fine but when I move my foot to the right I feel the pressure of the seat support on my right thigh. And there's no give way, especially where the stitching is, totally rigid.

I'm tempted to try a foam cushion to counteract some of the depth. I'm thinking the well is too deep. That's why I'm wondering about a different type of seat but I've no idea as to what, if anything, is available.

Do you have the lumbar support option? That makes a massive difference to comfort in my opinion.

After ending my lease on my last car (most recent Skoda Octavia with full electric seats), I’ve found going into a 2 series pool car with not much seat adjustment horrendous. After about an hour or so on a motorway trip the bottom of my back is really giving me jip.

Hope you manage to get something sorted anyway without having to go through the hassle of changing the entire car!

Sounds a tricky one to resolve - i guess there are car upholstery specialists that could do some work on the seat  padding to better suit your physiology. I find the sports seats ok but not perfect for me,  and I have the lumbar adjustment. I would have loved the comfort seats with massage but just couldn't stomach the cost.

Probably depends how old your back is...;-)

yup could be muscular tension or back pain

but this is usually something to do with the seat height. The right seat bolster is pushing up, cutting of circulation. Its like sitting on a chair with your legs dangling - it will cut off circulation especially when combined with an extremely sedentary activity

I know seat adjustment has been discussed but sometimes the simplest things are hard to get right

I found the G30 sports seats pretty uncomfortable compared my previous E60.

To the OP, how far back do you have the cushion tilted, I find having the seat flat far more comfortable for longer journeys

Yes, I originally had the cushion tilted up to support the back of my knees but this restricts lateral movement which I concluded was the main cause of discomfort. So I've gradually lowered the front of the cushion to flat which creates a bit more lateral freedom but the side support is still encroaching on the natural line from the rear of the cushion to the accelerator pedal. Also, the side support material is equally as firm as the cushion so there's little if any give. The stitching doesn't help either - really tough.

I've made a few enquiries to dealers about replacing seats which doesn't seem feasible at all - my local says they can't offer this.

So I think I'll have to explore modifying what I have, either using a booster cushion to reduce the well or maybe a local upholsterer to soften the right side wall.

A last resort may be the breakers yard for a spare and tackle the work myself. Dread the thought of that not least because it would probably invalidate the warranty.

Altogether quite disappointing for a car costing north of £50k and less than a year old. Yes, I know I should have asked for a 3 month test drive.....

The G30 Sports seats do seem tight, even when the side bolsters are at the most outward.

They felt tighter than cars I've had with actual fixed bucket seats, like my M3 CSL. Does depend on your build of course, some people are skinnier I guess and and have plenty of room.

By 'side bolsters' do you mean on the seat back as opposed to the seat cushion? I can't see any adjustment for the cushion sides.

Strangely, my physical build is medium as opposed to stocky or even large so all the more perplexing.

I don't really understand the popularity of the sports option

Quite agree.

My old E60 was also a 530D M Sport - mostly at the recommendation of the dealer at the time (2007). It looked and handled superbly and was still a looker last year which helped to find it a new owner. So the dealer was probably right. The seats though were entirely different to the G30 and very comfortable.

Here, in N.I., the dealers will say that the Sport will have a higher residual value. They seem to be right but I don't know why.

I honestly don’t think the seat is the issue. The G30 has one of the best standard seats I’ve ever sat in.

Try extending the the lower part of the seat, should take some strain off and lift the underside of your tights

How tall are you? Not to take the piss but maybe you are too big for the seat?

I can only say that the seat most certainly IS the issue.

I'm not sure if your reference to the G30 standard seats is in reference to the Sports seats which mine are.

Over some six months you may be sure I've already tried every adjustment possible in the moving parts.

At 5' 9", 13 st., 40 chest, 34 waist I'm hardly a giant!

There, now you have more information than my on-line dating profile and I still have a pain in my thigh!

Of course, at all times, what suits one person can't be considered suitable for the next. We're all individual.

I genuinely find the Sport seat of the G30 extremely uncomfortable. And after 23 years of perfect comfort in earlier 5 series?

I had temporary custody of a couple of standard msport f10s a few years back and had a very similar issue with the standard sports seat each time - just seeemed to dig into my right thigh (6'3,15.5st) enough to know i would avoid buying one without comfort seats or stick with the SE.

You're not alone, though I had thought this was a height issue (I'm very tall) - my first here:

was discussing exactly what you describe, though for me it was more in the hips and bum.

I did eventually get the seat in the right position and since then it's been fine. Could I tell you how...? Nope. I wish I'd been more systematic as struggling to get it quite right again after the cleaner had been in it. Indeed, I'm seriously considering memory seats next time purely so once I've got the right position I'll always be able to find it again!!

That said, I'd agree, seating position is slightly higher, slightly flatter than in previous cars.

The wallet out of the back pocket is a top tip. May not solve your issue, but did make a difference for me.

Fingers crossed that you solve it

Sorry - I meant the seat back.

I hired an M-Sport G30 for a week to test the seats and found them very tight, but 'just' bearable. I didn't find the thigh issue, but my commute is 180 miles each way (not daily) on flowing roads, so I spend a lot of time using cruise control with the steering wheel rather than feet on the throttle, so I have less leg movement.

I tested the Comfort seats, which I loved in my 750i but found them too flat and wide and offered little support in hard cornering, which you do more in a 5 than a 7.

The SE seats are probably the best solution, but the problem is I like the M styling on the car and then if you get VDC and option the SE seats you've basically deleted everything you paid extra for on the M-Sport.

For reference I'm 5'11" and 15.5 stone, some gym weight, some KFC!

I thought comfort seats would lack grip/support but the dealer suggested otherwise, and actually he was quite right easily as hugging as the sports seats when set up, they just look a bit like a sofa.

Love it. I shall now describe myself as slim, but just looking after some weight for the local curry house :-)

Did you ever get your seating issue resolved?

I've got the same (or very similar) issue, that is causing a serious impingement of my hip which, over the past 4 weeks has resulted in me walking like a very old man.  I'd love to get this sorted as it's the only thing that is letting this car down for me.

One thing I have noticed from reading this thread is that the move to flatter seat reportedly gives more comfort.  My previous F11 had the seats tilted up to provide plenty of thigh support, but that was on SE seats.  These being a different beast, I will try to raise the seat and flatten it out to see if this improves the comfort for me.

Parked up the 540 about an hour ago having completed a ‘comfortable’ drive of some 75 miles.

Got out did the normal stretching stuff and walked to the hotel.

I stopped by a guy who was sitting on the ground begging bowl in hand and tossed in the weekly contribution.

It is minus 1 here this evening.

Forgive me but exactually what do we deem ‘uncomfortable’..........

Its less of an issue for me as ive dropped 10kg due to unpleasant illness and my legs are definitely slimmed down - don't recommend it as a way to improve comfort in the G-series Sports seats but I'm very happy with them. Gotta be some upside. ^_^
