V8 curiosity

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping that my next BMW will be a V8; ideally a touring. But I'll probably not go for an E39, maybe an E61 545 or 550, if I can find one

I love the E39, but they're getting long in the tooth now and I'd like a bit more of a modern car next time around ;)

I've been invited to an 'invite only' weekend at the local specialist BMW Bowker showroom where they sell premium BMWs as well as Maserati's and similar... My Dad has known the guys there for a long time, mainly through dealings with the local Constab (all above board :P ). Will be interested to see what they have on offer as I jokingly said to my old man that if they have a car in there that I like (within reason) I may seriously be interested in it if the figures are right and he can put the deposit down for me (I've just taken a £15k dividend out from my business for the extension work were going to have done) so he knows I'm panicking over that   He said fine, he'll just need to confirm with my mother :lol: He's getting soft in his old age... I'll have to keep buying him whisky

A nice 335i touring would always appeal; not sure if I'll fit in one ok though

Bit obsessed with BMW v8s... I’ve had an e39 540, e63 645ci, e60 545i and now have an e70 4.8i x5. Can’t fault any of them.

Not even oil leaks on the N62 variants?

Well, when I say I can’t fault them, I don’t mean nothing ever went wrong with them - but nothing drastic, and they were no less reliable than any other engine I’ve had.

That being said, the only oil leak I had was on the e39 540 (M62 I think) - rocker cover gasket on one bank, which is fairly common. I don’t remember it being massively expensive to sort.

Likewise, that was the easiest oil leak to fix on the N62, the alternator bracket leak being somewhat more problematic!

Hello gents, new here but had my v8 for over 5 years now - and a rare old girl she is too:

 E61 550i manual box.

Wwwwwwhhhhaaaaattt now?

Pics or you are fibbing! :D

I've seen more unicorns than manual touring V8 BMWs.

Hi all, newbie here with a V8. I had an E39 540i for about seven years and loved her. She could always put a smile on my face and I will always be grateful to her for wiping the smug smile off the face of the brand new Audi TTS driver at the lights! At twenty years old it was at the point where I was going to have to spend heaps keeping her together or go through a painful divorce. I spent ages trying to find an E60 545 as a newer replacement but couldn't find one I liked but finally found a loaded 550. It's an SE but has the M Sport package, wheels, suspension, steering wheel, aerodynamics and rear spoiler. With comfort seats as well I'm not sure how this would differ from the M Sport model.

We've been together a few months now and while I don't yet love her the way I loved my 540 we are slowly building a relationship that I think could last.

Other than a couple of off road rangies these have been my first V8's and I would find it hard to give up that effortless power, from gentle and refined to snarling beast at the stab of the pedal. I'm at the age now where the advantages of auto outweigh the disadvantages (although I admit there are times when a manual would be nice) but sports mode can still put a smile on my face.

Great site with clearly some very knowledgeable people so will be checking back regularly.

Never too old for a manual...

I I'm 50 and I have a 6 speed in my E39, and I couldn't imagine driving it any other way lol...

The only thing I don't like about my M62 V8 is it has ALL the leaks lol...

Lovely car @MikeIndiaZero

An E60 touring will more than likely be my next motor and a V8 at that... Unless the F10s have dropped in price by then, but doubt they’ll have dropped enough

There was a 550i touring for sale fairly locally to me recently, didn’t last more than a few days on eBay. Very well spec’d too and an auto... perfect imo

Had my Alpina B10 V8 for nearly 6 years and don’t plan to get rid of it. The engine is great, nice & relaxed in auto but drives great when you switch to the steering wheel buttons :)

I've been wanting to scratch the V8 itch since I was about 10 or 11, with many years having passed since then!

However, tomorrow I go for a second viewing of a Jap import E39 540.

^^^This is a mod I'm hoping to do on mine (anyone know of an Alpina wheel for sale?!;):D), I did consider a manual conversion as the torque converter is on it's way out but the price of the parts needed and the amount of work involved to convert the car is mental. I'm thinking that mending the torque converter and fitting paddle shifters will be a good compromise. And that said, the auto box really suits the car anyway.

Probably easier to get an E46 paddle wheel

And the Alpinas have the nasty thin rimmed wheel too.

You sound like Dennis......I think the standard E46 rim is thin unless you pad it out

I have had an E39 540i Sport (non vanos) for over 3 years now!

I love the car to bits, I have had zero issues with it, simple engine just needs regular plugs, oil etc It has zero oil leaks and uses none between services, uses a tiny bit of coolant (valley pan I think) I had it put on a roling road a year ago and it made 307hp 327 lb ft so I think they are underated from the factory, having driven a later vanos one the non vanos seems to really come alive at 4k but the TU engine seems to have a flatter torque curve and not as peaky!

I also have a modded yellow Audi TT MK1 running 280hp, it's a bit of a hoot but compared to the 540i it's fragile, very fragile!!

I have recently started going through the 540i trying to make it look pretty again, I have re stained the leather and it's made a huge difference, I am now looking to sort some rust that had appeared over winter and some other bit's a pieces. It's at 150k miles and the engine is still very quiet on idle and touch wood the chain guides all seem fine so far!

Hopefully it will do another 150k miles ha ha

Still waiting for my 540i as DVLA are dragging their heels in re-registering it, after they allocated a 57 plate to it instead of a 51 ....
