Hi guys

Going to look at this in the morning just wondering if anyone on here knows the car at all and your opinions on it.

Hi,

I'd expect a pristine condition car with more spec and options at that asking price given it's an 'individual'. Nice clear pictures, but nothing really close up on the body etc, so might be absolutely pristine with zero rust or, has minor/moderate issues which is most likely.

Advert says zero issues, as they all do! ..   missing pixels for a start!

Pre-facelift steering wheel..  100% confirm it's not a pre-facelift car by the actual build date.

Usual aspects for all E39's to check out, bodywork, any rust/corrosion, jacking points etc. 540i specific stuff will be the engine, cooling sytem, the chain guides etc. The USA forums where theres many many more 540's around has vast information on what to lookout for on 540's so check all that out and compare to this car.

Car 'asking prices' are all over the place at the moment, including a lot of stupid and dreamer pricing. This one is riding on the fact it's a manual gearbox and a 'relative' low miler - definitely worth a look but I'd say it's actual selling price will be lower than advertised.

Let us know if you buy it .. or reject it !

Cheers, Dennis!

That’s what I was think spec wise it’s quite basic but stuff like heated seats I know can be added and if I got it would go for an android system for it.

Hi Jag,

Build date is on the suspension turret, should be just above/around that 'individual' sticker.

There's better options for upgrading the head unit on the E39's :)

Cheers, Dennis!

Cheers mate just had a look on realoem and apparently the build date is 06/01. If I get it will need to talk to you about head unit upgrades won’t be able to keep it stock like the m5

Lovely looking car; but that price

Check it over with a fine tooth comb, and I mean everywhere!

No way that's worth the asking price, even if it is a manual...

Good luck though; let us know how you get on

as to price toooooo much  me thinks

mot history looks better than a lot i've seen :)

but still not a 6g car 4 maybe but thats about it

i did not look as to private or garage sale ?

if i was in the market  i would like to have it up on a ramp and under trays off ad check all brake lines as mot history shows slight rusting on some after only a few years but could just be a job worth tester?

but looks like car has spent time up in scotland re weather etc

Hi guys

Well had a nice drive into London this morning on the way back now. Didn’t buy the car there were a few things for me that didn’t stack up.

The front kidney grill when I wen to open the bonnet nearly came out in my hand.

The tool kit and CD player we all missing.

It’s had paintwork at some stage and the inner front wheel arch covers were not put back in place with plastic covers.

The rear number plate light was popping out.

The fan in the engine bay wasn’t sitting nicely in the housing as they do.

The underside was all wax oiled which I don’t mind on a car that looks like it’s been cared for.

Pixels were out.

The colour of the car was beautiful if anything it was too clean but this didn’t follow through to the inside of the car. The boot for example looked like it had just been to the rubbish tip.

For me personally the car didn’t feel right I’ve had a fair few e39s now and I understand they are not new but when you’re asking top dollar for a car then at least get the little things sorted.

Also I managed to get the trader down to £5250 over the phone very easily. Knocking a £1k off the asking price for a trader over the phone is usually very rare. Like I say the car just didn’t feel right for me so I walked away.

Hi,

That's too bad, but not at all surprising. Nowadays there's simply way too many overpriced cars when it comes to asking prices and it's mainly due to cheap credit/borrowing. That aspect is looking like it'll be reducing as credit becomes harder to secure, interest rates are likely looking to be raised and a lot of people's disposable incomes get squeezed.

It also sounds like the car isn't quite right and not presented well enough to ask anywhere near £6K. The dealer is hoping someone who isn't an enthusiast or hasn't really done their homework will buy it at closer to the asking price.

It's a £4K max selling price car and even then, when tidied up and cleaned with the issues above nicely resolved. It's likely to sit around for quite a while unsold.

Cheers, Dennis!

A six speed manual 540i Sport is a very rare car especially in face lift form.

Find another 100k one for £4000 if you can but I seriously doubt it. I am not saying it is worth the asking price but something around £5000 is probably right for the car - £4k or slightly less if it was an auto.

Completely agree the 540i/6 sport is one very rare car I had one a couple of years back and in some respects I preferred it to my m5. This car I went to see this morning just didn’t feel right hence why I walked away.

The money was right to be fair at £5250 but the car just didn’t feel right to me.

The colour was very nice.

It's at the mileage for the cooling system overhaul and sensors too ... The underneath would need some close inspection as well...
