Ah, do they have SLS then? the 525ix used CHF11S for that reason IIRC.

I was told the choice of CHF11 power steering fluid was used because of the working temperature in the 540 engine bay ?

The 540 Touring versions did have SLS also the American/Australian  M540's  ( M5's using the M60).

"Pentosin is a large temperature range (Multi-viscosity like) Hydraulic system fluid.
Pentosin 7 is a mineral based oil and Pentosin 11 is a full synthetic.
ATF is basically a high detergent 20w oil with the lubricating property additives modified to make it Dexron or Mercon.
The additives and detergent levels in ATF make it very "Poisonous" to a Pentosin based system. Seal leakage is the result of mixing them.
Pentosin is a pale green out of the can but will turn a rusty red over time. It is NEVER bright red."

Isn’t CHF used because of the shared use with the brake system / booster or am I thinking of the 540 touring?

In The last updated I explained that the Inde ( BM Euro Service ) wanted us to pop in for a chat..

Upon arriving we where told we would need a new gearbox cooler as the cooler had corroded along with the cooler rubber pipes

and plenty of automatic transmission fluid and transmission filter.

Update Sixteen

25/1/2018

39279292274_9ced4ac7b9_o.jpg

Well we picked her up Friday afternoon our first real experience with her as BMW intended

and we where really supersized so we booked her in for an M.O.T. after a little mess around she passed the following day.

We then set about changing the spark plugs.

28210154549_a53642ee01_o.jpg

One Of The Old Ones.

39091223855_0ebde8dbed_o.jpg

New Shiny One.

28210155539_b4ea17f2e5_o.jpg

Driving around the block after the spark plug change was a noticeably difference but at idle was the real change.

much smoother balanced idle.

Then we fitted a fancy RamAir panel filter to see if we could make that big old M60 sing a little louder.

28210156469_d2dfe0ee98_o.jpg

The last job for the day was the one I was looking forward to the most fitting the door coin holders that  I'd had for Christmas.

Nice work :) just looking at the pic of it as found covered in leaves and algae compared to the shiny pic of it waiting for an MOT shows how much of a transformation its been!

That coin holder is kinda cool too, not seen those before, do they just clip into the door pocket?

Thanks for the kind words mate.. We do love our cars..When you devote hours and hours of your life that you'll never get back they become so much more then cars as you understand being a car person and in our case more like a part of the family - We have had five boxy old fives and they all have had a kind of personality mostly down to the life they have had before coming into our hands - The chip seems to have made the engine less restrictive it just seems to comes on stronger :D

Update Twenty

17/3/2018

When we purchased Boudica she had been liberated from her Parchment interior mats..

Luckly we sourced a used set at a very reasonable price.

The keen eyed readers will have noticed in the first photo that the steering wheel has been changed.

I'm unsure of the name of the steering wheel but I've found a photo of this style wheel fitted to an 850csl and some 1994 M5s.

Prefer the other steering wheel if I'm honest which I had in my m3 but changed it for a later version anyway.

Looks a different car than from from the first pics though:D

Yep I know the feeling lol. Boudica reminds me very much of my 540i Touring in the sense that it was a bit ropey when I first got it but after much persistence and determination I finally got it to a decent standard that I was happy with.

We both saw a diamond in the rough with our 540i's but we both knew it would be worth it in the end. ;) Enjoy
