The colour is what first attracted me..... She should be plenty of fun when the 3:64 LSD is fitted and some software has been tweaked.. But the manuals are the ultimate :wink:

Update Four

Today saw us removing all the surface rust from where the fuel tank lives and applying a coat of red red oxide primer.

That's that part done the front and sides haven't been forgotten there just isn't anything to de-rust on one side and we are waiting for another nimble stone to arrive to attack the one patch on the other side but it will be addressed when we fit an detachable tow bar later this month.. ;) 

 

Why we where waiting around for paint to dry..:lol: We decided to condition the leather again and come across the build sheet tucked away in the rear bench.

Nice one Stefan! Already top notch work is starting to shine from Butler HQ! I've got a funny feeling that this Hammerite fetish runs in the family right? :lol: Keep up the great work and I'm sure you'll be rewarded with another fantastic 540i in the end. Such a worthy project and I wish you all the best in your build.

Thanks mate defiantly a labour of love but she isn't a hard car to work on if that makes sense some of ours have given us real fights :lol: But this one definitely wants back on the road .. We do like Hammerite :lol:....It works thought and hasn't put us wrong yet the local D.I.Y shop knows what we are after when we pop in :lol: I'm hoping she will be a lovely thing when shes done thanks again for the goodwill wishes. :D

Update Five

4/10/2017

 

First step was refitting the gear selector and surround which I'm happy went back together lovely as we didn't original remove it 

but the previous owner took great care removing it so it went back together great.

I've never seen 15 year old oil before so I wasn't to sure about what to be expecting.

 

Then it was time to address the bull in the room and attempt to start the engine first task was to naturalise the pesky alarm.

luckily there is a long and lengthy process of resetting the alarm and that step was undertaken and the alarm is working again.

we then removed the fuel pump fuse and still nothing turns out our standby battery wasn't keeping charger so we swapped the battery 

and she turned over on the button...we turned her over a couple of times to move all the oil around the engine we then replaced the fuel pump fuse and turned her over again after roughly three attempts she came to life we left her running and got her up to temperature checking for leaks and making sure everything was copacetic and as luck would have it everything seems to be in good order.

It's gotta be said guys that turned over a bit longer than I would have expected for it to fire up? I would have said you might have had a fuelling problem to begin with before it burst back into life? Unless that was the two first couple times you turned the engine over to get the oil pressure up before replacing the fuel pump fuse? I think that is what I understood above?

Either way congrats to you both as you can now successfully say you have another running E34 M60b40 in the family! :D Yeah! Nice one guys! :D Ahhh the sweet sound of success when the V8 finally fired up! :)

The first and second turn over was with no pump fuse the second time wasn't but she only had ten pound of fuel with the front of the car up and on a slant a fact we failed to pick up on once we added more fuel she started wasn't the quickest of starts but now shes on the button :lol:.. lazy old girl :wink: we haven't had much experience with starting engines that have been stood but managed to get her started so I'm striking that up as a win :lol:

Update Six

8/10/2017

 

It's all been plain sailing and a bit of a laugh until our first major problem  rear its ugly head upon the first test drive we noticed the gearbox

will not let us reverse... :ph34r: and neutral is like drive anyway when we got back and had a cup of tea... we tried to see what it could be ..  Upon arriving back at the car she had lost all gears..:mellow: fast forward to this morning  Sunday at Butler HQ is car wash day the neighbour comes out very inquisitive about old Boudica and it comes to the normal line of " whats she sound like "  so I started her up from out the car and she starts to move forward..  luckily Dad can still move when he wants to :lol:

 

So the long and short is we have a gearbox problem first we had no reverse and neutral was like drive then we had no gears now

all the gears are drive gears including park.

Rear disc looked like they had just been changed prier to her coming off the road..:huh: Unfortunate I don't have any cleaned up photo's of the rears

but I'll be painting the calipers this coming week I can't stand rusty coloured calipers and lucky the rust hasn't attacked them so painting them with be a pleasure.

Wow that's an impressive collection of cobwebs right there! Enough to make the Addams family proud I rekon! :lol: Well, you guys are definitely making progress as it's moving under it's own stream!B) Re gearbox, almost sounds like the cable is not adjusted properly?! Too tight maybe?! I Where you able to manually select all the gears from the selector shaft before you fitted the new cable?!

I've been under again ... and checked the cable adjustment . It sadly, looks to be working fine :ph34r:  

 The cobwebs are home to some big and vicious spiders :lol: It's not nice being on your back looking at some p**** off Spider :lol:

Update Seven

14/10/2017

 

We have spoke to our local independent BMW specialist about the gearbox problem and she will be going in within the month

for investigation ..:rolleyes:  unfortunately we have no access to a ramp or pit so we thought it would be best to leave the job to someone that has experience

with these gearbox's and know what they are doing... Don't worry we still have many niggly jobs to undertake...:)

 

Window Wipers 

 

Upon first inspection we noticed the window wipers where seized so today we set about liberating them.

 

First we had to remove the wipers and scuttle panels.

With all that grime gone we liberated the wipers plenty of SAS spray and a little bit of time.

We have moving wipers but only on the maximum settings and they aren't moving very fast.. :ph34r:..

We have changed the wiper module and Control Module..I'm hoping to see everything loosen up a little more tomorrow

We have left the spindles and arms soaking in SAS spray over night and we will see what tomorrow brings.

There comes a time an E34 owner must do the dreaded..  sill cover removal and this weekend was our turn.

Again.. Remember the longer you put if off the worse it could be.. or couldn't be..

I can't stress enough how important it is to clean behind the wing it will most probably put years onto your car.

All rust is wire brushed away with a wire attachment or stone attachment then soaked in rust converter just for peace of mind.

One small hole appeared about the size of a small cotton wool bud so we filled the hole with

rust proof and smeared some Corgo quick steel after another going over it was as good as new.. It's nice when you find no real horrors.

On a whole we are really happy with the first sill It could have been so much worse all the rust has been removed

then socked with rust converter for good measure then coated with red oxide and then Hammerite Hammered black.

Why the bumper and grill was off I painted the pipes..Which looks much better and cleaned all the leaves and cobwebs.. It could do with a wipe

down with some APC but I didn't have non at hand and I didn't fancy getting water all over the show and we could see rain would stop play..:mellow:

This is always a nice rewarding one.. when doing the sills your hard work gets mostly covered up.. But when cleaning 

the front valance your hard work always greets you upon crawling under the front of the car or at M.O.T time.

We expected this to be the worse sill out of the pair but once we got into cleaning the rust away it wasn't half as bad as we thought.

Unfortunately I only seem to have the finished photos from the jacking points but they did come out lovely and no horrors.
