2010 F10 525d Aircon Condenser

Does anyone have any information on the 'apparent' recall for certain F10's to replace the aircon condenser?

My aircon has just failed and the car is going to an independent specialist next Tuesday to be examined.

I understand that the Efficient dynamics flaps are the problem as when they open they leave the condenser exposed to all the road crap flying up.

Cheers for any advice.

You have a 2010 car so 7 years old and it will need a condenser replacement. BMW did replace some cars' condensers under warranty once they failed but any recall didn't hit our 2010 cars. The flaps behind the front grills aren't the problem as there are models in the range that don't have those flaps yet they still suffer the same fate and there is the direct line of sight to the condenser for road debris. The issue is one of condenser quality. I replaced mine a year ago at BMW and it cost £270 and like many others it started leaking at the bottom right hand corner of the condenser when looking at it through the front bumper cover.  This, I believe, was a reduced price due to BMW acknowledging early failure of the part. BMW list the condenser alone at over £400 but they can be had for much less than that from the likes of Eurocarparts. Get a Hella Behr one and you have the OE quality part.

Hella Behr condenser from Eurocar was just over £100. You'll also need two replacement gaskets for where the condenser and the pipes connect - I got mine from BMW for about £7. Straightforward replacement.

I attached some fine mesh behind the the grille and lower air intake to improve protection.

Update.

After talking to BMW customer service who were very helpful my car isn't one of the recalled ones.

However, the condenser as it turns out is fine and it just needed a regas. There aren't any leaks and things are now cool again.

So nice when it is just a simple fix. Long may it last!

Matthew did you have a problem with your Condensor before ? if so was it done under warranty. As i also have a 530D it would be handy to know what to look out for

Yep, my condenser failed last year and after faffing about working out how fix it myself without releasing the remaining gas to the atmosphere (take it to be gas-evacuated, take it home to replace the condenser, take it back to be leak checked and re-gassed) I gave BMW a ring and they charged me £270 to repair it. I didn't think that was too bad. Not sure what they are charging now as the list price on the condenser alone is over £400 from BMW. You can source an OE quality from Eurocarparts for around £110. If BMW's price has changed dramatically.

What were the symptoms of a failing condensor, sometimes when it rains my windscreen does get steamy.

With mine the aircon was working but I started hearing odd noises from behind the dashboard especially when the engine was switched off for a few seconds. Like a steam being released from a pressure pot. I can't remember the measurements but the technician said that my aircon shouldn't have been able to run with such a little amount of refrigerant in the system. I put that down to a robust design. Fitted the new condenser and the noise was banished.

I always leave my aircon on auto and never have steamy windows - (cue @Dr Taylor). You sure you don't have secondary moisture in the car beneath the carpets?

I had a similar noise on mine occur recently, hardly any cold air at all  and steaming happening a fair amount. I assumed the aircon just needed to be re-gassed.

I've not asked BM if mine needs the recall done as the re-gas seems to have corrected it, well all but the steaming anyway.

The condenser is a noted weak point on the earlier F10-11's, I doubt they would honour the silent recall nowadays in any case though as the majority will have been replaced one time or another.

My aircon stopped working and I got all steamed up over the weekend! I read this thread and so went to the local dealers with my 2014 520d They checked on their system, I didn't buy it new or from them, and its booked in next Monday for a condenser under warranty! Nice.
