Would you sell your e39 for an e38??

52 posts in this topic

Just curious how many of us devoted e39 owners would consider parting with them for an e38...?

I've seen a 2001 728i Sport Individual for sale. Looks fantastic..... wondering whether to sell my 530i for it..

I probably would, but it will depend on the engine that I was changing from. In your case, I'd try go for a 740i or higher but 728i Sport Individuals are good in their own way. It just depends if its worth losing a bit of performance for the luxuries and road presence of a 7er Sport individual.

I would too.

Having owned a 728i (and thoroughly loved every minute of it, even with having to get new sills welded in  ) and driven a few 740i's, I'd get another 728i anytime...

V8s are lovely, but a lot I came across needed the timing chain guides doing, which put me off etc... Plus for me, the lighter 728i handled better, more so when on coilovers ;)

Just ensure it's as rust free as possible and the cooling system has been looked after (same niggles as the E39's really)!

Plus the E38 Sport Individuals are the ones to go for...

Don't get me wrong I'm sure I'd like one but the question was would I sell my e39 for one and I wouldn't.

I had an E38 728i for a couple of weeks before parting with it (long story) and really wish I'd kept it. I honestly prefer the styling to the E39 overall and it just felt like an even more solid car, if that's possible. But given that it's even bigger than the E39 and given I can only just fit my E39 touring in my garage, an E38 will have to remain a pipe dream. Genuinely think the E38 is one of the best looking cars BMW ever made though - it just has such presence!

Was hoping all the replies would be 'no way' so I wouldn't be tempted further by this e38 I've seen  Problem is I couldn't actually part with my e39 so it would mean another car....which I don't need! I must resist!!

Shite advert

Crap pics of the exterior (only 2, why)?!

Lots of interior pics, great... But still. If it has been owned by an ex-F1 driver, why hasn't he name dropped?!

I'd want a lot more pictures of the exterior with any blemishes shown, service history details and an MOT history etc...

Looks lovely, but that's not enough to warrant £3k for a large, old E38 that will have some issues somewhere, they all do!

I agree it is a poor advert. I've spoken to the guy that's selling it. It belonged to his dad for over 10 years but was off the road for a long period. About £4k was spent on it including a new fuel tank, which deteriorated after it had been stood for so long. It's been back on the road for a couple of years and has a full mot.

Originally owned by Damon Hill, whom his dad bought it from. He's sent me a lot more photos and it looks good, no rust that he's aware of. Speaking to him I get the feeling he's just not a 'car' guy which may explain the advert.

Think I'd be looking at more £2k than £3k.

Pretty cool to have been owned by Damon Hill tho! Given the low mileage and what looks like stellar condition, I don't think £3k is total daylight robbery. I could easily see this up for sale at some sort of specialist for a lot more. I'm just glad it's located far enough away from me to not make me tempted to go and see it :)

I like E38's but so many of them fail in that they lack heated seats - seems more popular in the E39!!!

The seller has lied in his advert!

It says was owned by a champion F1 driver......

I was thinking the same thing, I'm in Leeds but still tempted! At the moment I think it's a buyer's market, not many people looking for thirsty 16 year old cars. £2k is probably cheeky but you never know!

I did Preston to Glasgow for my E38 and Preston to London, twice for my E39s. Train travel is cheap if you go during the day/working week and it's cheap enough to book a return journey, just in case etc...

If it's as he says it is and more so with a replaced fuel tank, then £3k is very much what it's worth IMO... £2k is too low. However, I'm a Northerner just like you @e34-535ise, so like to keep some £££ in me back pocket, so I'd personally start at £2500 and go from there.

Cash is always king ;)

I'd love a 740/750, but I'd wonder if I'd miss the convenience of a Touring. I don't need an estate, but there have been times when I've had a fridge/freezer to move, or my bike.

Also, spontaneous purchases of larger items would need more planning.

As mentioned above, they are a very attractive/imposing car.

That's temptation gone then!

I'm more than a little jealous... do you mind me asking if you managed to haggle him down?

I did but I'm going to keep that under wraps until it's back home!

Good work. Would love to see some better pictures when you've got it home. Honestly an E38 sport like that is just about as close to motoring perfection for me (at least sub 5K) as it's possible to go.. so I'll reiterate that I'm very envious of your acquisition :)

Looks fantastic - trying to work out the colour - guessing at Le Mans Blue or Avus Blue.

Love the piped Contours - it looks well kept. Good luck!

I have a local client with a two E38 750i's - a SWB and LWB with 81000 and 60000 miles respectively. He only got the LWB last month from the North East. He uses them as daily drivers and likes them so much he sent a brand new Mustang back and bought the LWB!

I would love a 750i SWB sport in a dark colour with light interior and contrasting piped contour seats. Mmmmm....
