Jump started neighbours car now mine running like a dog and stalling!!!?!?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My next door neighbour asked me to jump start his car.

We connected the cables to the battery and started my car which ran fine.

When he tried to start his mine died.

Now it starts like its running on two cylinders, not getting fuel and stalling.

Help!

Hmm. Do a search on this forum, there was a thread a few years ago where the whole right way/wrong way of doing jump starting was discussed, and probably more of interest to you, what the problems could be. Hoping it's not bad news for you.

The battery.

Which Im now learning is a mistake.

He's a car nut, races cars etc and he wired it up.......

4 BMW's and never knew this. Never needed to or jump one of them.

Check to see if one of your terminals is loose...

It wouldn't be the first time. I've seen a jump start knock loose a clamp that had come undone a touch and was only holding tight by force of habit

Okay..second and really good AA guy came out...

He's an ex auto electrician also.....

He said you shouldn't be able to blow the ECU if jump done correctly and all the front jump points do is add convenience.

Problem turned out to be that despite gauge saying had 1/4 tank, the car on a camber wasnt picking up fuel.

Jumping from the battery was a bad idea, you should use the terminals under the bonnet.

Can you explain that?

Aiui the points under the bonnet are an Earth and a +ve connected directly to the battery with a big fat cable

So all you are doing is lengthening the jump leads in effect.

When batteries could be seen easily and not hidden away you didn't have "jump" points.

I've never had an issue jumping from either set of terminals.

However there is a procedure to follow especially using non suppressed cables.

In OPs case it was another issue altogether, which makes me think he has a transfer pump problem.
