Hi

I've got a 2012 f10 so it has CIC. I have BMW connected apps or something in the menu but no subscription so it essentially does nothing as far as I can see.

What I'd like is to play Spotify or amazon music directly rather than stream via Bluetooth.

Is this possible with my car, or do I need the later NBT thingie?   any other options?

Thanks!

Mike

Have you the facility to plug ipod/iphone/iwhatever direct into the car via a USB port in rear of centre consol?

I have this and I've been told its far better music quality that by streaming via Bluetooth.

You need pro nav for Bluetooth streaming which I don't have anyhoo.

Not that I am an expert in these things....what is CIC then?

Not an expert either..  CIC is the computer in the dash... I think!!!

I'll try the cable but considering I seem to have everything in principle.. a mobile data connection, computer (CIC), and speakers... it doesn't seem beyond the realm of possibility to run an app and get music streamed direct to dashboard.

That said the data connection is probably abysmal as I think it's ye olde GPRS

My 2012 F10 had this and it worked fine.  I had BMW Apps specified with the car and used an iPhone5, with both the BMW Connected App installed on it, along with the usual Amazon Music app.  The phone was connected to the car via the USB in the centre console cubby using a lightning cable.  Then start BMW Connected on the phone (the phone will show it's connecting), then on the iDrive ensure the phone is connected, then select Amazon from the apps appearing on the iDrive screen and you're done.  Full control of Amazon music on the iDrive, including streaming using the phone's mobile data connection, album art, search functions, the works.

Thanks, sounds promising! Do you have a subscription to allow that to work?

I just tried with both of the BMW connected apps from the android store and both find my car via the VIN but neither registers successfully. The older app does nothing when I click "register". The later app says "could not register please try again later".

Do I need a subscription? I'd hope it would tell me what was wrong or missing but no.

I'm pretty sure it still worked when the car was over 3 years old when the original subscription ran out, as it did not need to use the on-board SIM or any of the pay-to-use Connected Drive functions.  One of the things that is apparent however, is that there are a myriad of different iDrive software versions, each which behaves in a slightly different way.

I've never used mine, that pic is from Google, the snap in cradles can be found here, I just plug mine into the charger and sling it on the tray...

" A snap-in adapter for all compatible phones with a micro-USB port. Alongside charging, it also provides improved reception and secure docking. And thanks to its USB interface, it allows the playback of music stored on the phone through the BMW audio system. "

I have the phone cradle for the iPhone 6 & 7 and all it does is connect the phone to the car without the need for the use of the USB, whilst keeping the phone secure. So I can charge, play music and access those supported apps via the iDrive, whilst leaving the USB free for additional storage for Video etc.
