Hello from across the pond

Recommended Posts

My name is Al, I'm British, a car nut originally from London, but have been in Texas for the last 16 years. I've recently bought a 1981 BMW 528i that i'd like to bring back to life. While I owned a BMW during the 90's while I was going to University, I've mostly owned Mercedes Benz since living in the US and have just recently gotten back into BMW's.

I'd like to source European style bumpers for this car. I would prefer new aftermarket so that I can buy them disassembled, making shipping for feasible.

Here's my project car, I bought it off this really cool Jamaican guy. As I went to School in W12, he kind of made me homesick :)

Any leads would be gratefully appreciated.

Best wishes

Al

Hi Al,

Welcome to a great Forum.

As you are across the pond have a look at "mye28.com", it is an American site but several members are running E12's

One of the members "Ovide" is "Ivo Christov" who runs an E28 specialist shop in the Netherlands:

https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiYl4iJ5o3MAhVJvhQKHY5oCWQQ7gEIIzAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Ftranslate.google.co.uk%2Ftranslate%3Fhl%3Den%26sl%3Dnl%26u%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.e28.nl%2F%26prev%3Dsearch&usg=AFQjCNFCWIbx0zU9eHu7oSByhpE5zwwKkw&sig2=NRafEx3fqRNyA2QJJW2nJw

He currently has a chrome E12 rear bumper advertised on his for sale web page:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-E12-Euro-Rear-Bumper-Chromeparts-NEW-OEM-M535i-530i-528i-Alpina-525-Chrome-/331744078074?vxp=mtr&hash=item4d3d7ce8fa

He visits the US for a holiday / road trip every year and ships across lots rare parts for Euro conversions.

Might be worth giving him a shout for some parts for his next trip if you are not in a rush to do this.

In my experience trying to obtain Euro parts in the US will cost you an arm and a leg as they are in demand by owners who are looking for the clean Euro look as opposed to the clunky federalised offerings.

Good luck with your search.

Real sharp clean looking E12 you have there.

Regards,

Mick

As said this looks nice, AC as well. E12's are very few and far between now, my advice would be German Ebay http://www.ebay.de/. To complete the transformation In my opinion, you will need to get rid of the side repeaters in the front and rear wings. Have you considered an M535i plastic front item in lieu of the chrome one?

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I believe that the gentleman that Mick mentioned was in town last week as one of my E28 friends had indicated that he had visited with him. I'm also a member member of the e28 board as while I've recently gotten back to BMW, I'm in full immersion mode and have purchased 5 BMW's in the past year. The motivation for this purchase is driven by an almost perfect 88 535is parts car that about a year ago. The car was t-boned and I have not found a suitable shell for it. I was talking to a BMW buddy here locally who indicated that the engine, transmission, rear end and interior can all be swapped into an E12. This seemed to be a much more interesting proposition then another E28.

I bought this car as a non runner but managed to get it running (poorly) pretty quickly as I found that negative battery wire was corroded badly and that rats had chewed up the coil wire. This has somewhat put a kink in my plan to swap everything over.

The reason that I'm looking to the UK for bumpers is because the costs of all euro parts, whether Mercedes or BMW is extremely high and shipping costs from Europe is also expensive. As I'm planning a trip to London in May, I thought I would look around and see what's available. I can bet money that there is a company in Taiwan or some other place in the far east that still makes sheet metal and bumpers for these cars. I just need to find a source :)

Love the white with the retro looks one of my favourite designs in that colour. Shall watch your build thread, won't be much help as I'm a e39 fan although I could find space for a white beauty. I've pm you

There is a BMW meet at the Ace Cafe in North London on the 14th if you are around then. I should be there.

Nothing like that here in Manchester that I'm aware of.

Here's a quick video that I took of the car when I first pulled it into the workshop. Quickly saw a couple of issues that would have prevented it from running such as the bad ground strap , eaten up coil wire and frozen linkage.

It fired right away but did is not running great. I've already ordered, plugs, wires , rotor, cap etc which will help.

Here's a video:

It's 4:33 AM and I've made some progress. Pulled the plugs and they looked OK , as did the cap and rotor so I just changed the plug wires. The car started but still ran badly so I drained all of the old fuel (about 7 gallons) from the tank and refilled with fresh gasoline (FYI @ $1.69/gallon).

The fired up but did not run on all 6. I checked with with a stethoscope and found that at least 3 injectors were not firing. After a few taps on each injector, they came back to life and the car started running quite well. Not bad give that the last sticker on the dash was from 2004. A/C still had charge which was an additional bonus.

Needs a cold start valve as the one on the car is leaking and a thermostat which appears to be always open.

At least you don't have the dreaded thermal redactors of the 530i, but you'll probably still have a catalytic converter. USA 528i's ran a lower CR than the Euro ones, so a head skim would improve it further if you could be bothered! In warmer climates you can pretty much disconnect the cold start injector - they often start and run okay from cold without it.

This is correct, just about every US spec car from the 70's and 80's was smogged and under powered when compared to Euro cars. They make great turbo candidates however.

Welcome. Looks a nice clean car.

Those US spec bumpers do ruin the look though

Worked a little more on the 528i yesterday with the kid. Got the clutch bled out along with the brakes. The front left caliper is completely seized where there is no fluid coming out. Thermostat was a little suspect so the kid change it out with the one in the parts car.

Flushed the coolant and took the car for a spin. Tires are really old and have some major cracks but aside from the squirly driving, it ran pretty well

I gave the car a good pressure wash and wiped down the interior. The engine bay cleaned up quite nicely and the car now looks presentable. Once the brakes are rebuilt and I have new tires on it, I would feel comfortable driving it around. The speedometer needs to go :)

That's a good looking car. I plan on rebuilding the calipers on the 528i this weekend and replacing the brake hoses. I'll put the 16" wheels and tires from the 535is parts car on it for now. The wheels are horrible aftermarket rubbish but the tires are brand new Michelin so it's hard to justify spending on the 14" wheels for now.

Once brakes are done, I will move on to fuel lines.
