What did you do to your F07/F10/F11 today?

Recommended Posts

Finally found a good BMW specialist locally. Very pleased. Anyone in south Wales PM me if you want the name. After recent experiences with shytner this is a revelation. They ask you to fill it a questionnaire when you first go in, 2 questions - how much of an enthusiast are you, and how technical are you. The reason being they want to make sure you have just the right amount of detail and not patronise etc. Wowza. That's great. They checked some other stuff out for free too and with every visit you get a printout of all modules/codes FoC along with the entire history of the car.

And a courtesy car in the form of an e46 compact if you don't want to wait. No form filling, just take it.

Great stuff.

And best of all the car only needed an oil service and microfilter and not the air filter and plugs Shytner tried to get me to pay for.

Booked it in for a slight buckled wheel repair..

I had the wheels swapped back to fronts a couple of weeks ago and balanced, he said there was a slight buckle on one so taking the opportunity to have it repaired. Local co a girl in the office used and they said they would lend me a wheel whilst mine was straightened.

I'll update you all as to how it goes, I wasn't aware they could straighten alloys?

Sounds like yours is relatively minor and probably could be straightened by gently rolling it between rollers/wheels in a similar way that hand rolled body panels are made but it's a big machine that turns the rim between rollers along with some careful handiwork provided its a pucker establishment and techs who know what they are doing.

When I mashed my E60 alloy into a pothole a couple of firms offered to repair it. When asked how, they responded with "a blow torch and a big hammer". I declined their offer for fear of inducing cracks in the alloy from the heating/cooling if not done properly. I bought a new alloy and claimed the costs of the damage successfully from the council.

Yes please keep us posted.

Visited the tyre place today, must say I was very impressed (they even had the correct jack pad)

Quoted £35 after showing me the wheel on the machine

Also quoted £55 a corner for powder coating which in the scheme of things is good as they lend you a set of wheels, which saves me buying axle stands and using the kids car.

On the -ve side the wheels are shocking...

That's a good price for powder coating.  Are you going to get it done?

The tyre choice is also shocking.....I have them on the rear of mine as supplied by AUC and they are dreadful.  Getting rid of them before they come back out next spring.

Yes I will get them done, and more than likely here but not sure if to wait until winter is over?

I can get them cheaper but having a spare set of wheels is handy, the prices above are all + VAT sorry.

Wait till after the winter, that's what I did.

Still £55+vat is less than I paid for 19".  Not by much but its still good value, yours are 19" aren't they?

Achieved 59.5 mpg from a cold start over a 30 mile journey - just sticking to speed limits and average speed cameras of 50 mph over 6 miles of the M60. Just me and nothing in the boot.

Yes 19,problem is I need 4 tyres and would like the people who refurb the wheels to fit them as I know they will take care, loads of horror stories about tyre chimps damaging wheels. The Mrs garage has even damaged one of ours in the past, looked like it had been laid on its face. Problem is you struggle to find someone who gives a feck.

The last car,  I had from 12 weeks old and when I took it for new fronts the guy struggled to get them off, the prick back heeled the face of the wheel right in front of me. Needless to say the owner came out of his office when I voiced my opinion. His answer... "There's no damage"

I wish I didn't care but I do, it's a personality trait sadly.

You aren't alone with this trait of yours. I really get annoyed with people who have a blatant disregard for others' stuff, whether a watch in for repair or my car - just makes my blood boil. It's mine, I paid good money for it, if I entrust you to work on it, make bloody sure you treat it like I do!

Thats what I did, I waited to get my rims refurbed when I needed new tyres. It makes no odds to the wheel specialist if he is putting on your old tyre back on or a new one if it's powder coated or painted properly. If a wheel specialist offers to refurb your wheels without taking the tyre off, walk away. If you get them powered coated, chances are the firm who does it will take care because they know you can reject it.

What you want is a tyre fitter who has a lever less machine. This means no crowbars or tyre levers are put anywhere near your rims and it's all done by machine which uses a small wheel/roller to depress the sidewall of the tyre and then flips it up and over. The guy I used for fitting the new front tyres had a lever less tyre machine.

There is nothing wrong with that trait at all. I understand that and completely agree with ....

You both, like me and others on here clearly work hard to buy a nice car and with that comes nice (and therefore) expensive wheels and everything else in it which should be treated with respect. My most stressed out days are when the car is in for any work and I spend the whole day fretting about how someone else will be treating my pride and joy.

If you are ever in Johnstone, Collins tyre service on the Beith Road have a lever less tyre machine which also has plastic guards over the clamp that grips your rims, they did my tyres and a puncture repair on the wife's diamond cut alloys without a mark.

Similar to the above, but I stalk* my car remotely so soon know if it is being mistreated along with the dashcam sitting there.

*in numerous ways some more obvious others less so....would like to get my dashcam working properly remotely though.

For those with BMW Labs then it is definitely worth getting it working (a PITA to setup an IFTTT) but once sorted the things you can do nicely extend your ability.

I checked my tyre pressures and not one tyre had lost any pressure. Which is impressive as rather ashamedly I haven't checked my tyre pressures for a couple of months! I'm putting it down to having a good seal between rim and tyre thanks to the rims being powder coated.

Washed it, loads of green appearing around some of the edges. That came away with a good pressure wash and then the two bucket method.

Wheels came up a treat with Bilt Hamber, still evidence of the poor boys alloy wheel wax so it's doings it's job.

Quite ashamed how bad the car was, but every weekend recently has been spent working on the house.
