Rick's E28 V8 Build

Recommended Posts

Oh I do hope that's the case. I can't really find a definitive answer except from brimmer forums thread saying the M60 is on the nose, and m62 off the flywheel. But I'm sure a call to TTV who I plan to buy a lightened flywheel off might just be able to conform this for me. If I speak to them nicely enough!

Oh and I'm sure if I bought the Bentley like you advice ud just be able to look it up! #iamaidiot

Right i had to make two trips because they're so heavy with info...

Crankshaft speed sensor M62:

"reads a toothed pulse wheel mounted on the flywheel"

Appears to be located in the bell housing though gearbox removal section does not mention the need to remove it.

M54 CSS is located in the block.

I concluded you need a v8 box :)

V8 box it is dunc! Thanks for your help! I have a couple of alternatives, one is cheap but way to laid back to rely on. The other will be exspencive and reluctant to sell.

M5 (v8) box will work, the 6 pot getrag 6 speeds will work but the bell housing has to be swapped to v8 item, the crank sensor on the m60 is on the front of the engine, m62 is on the rear, so if using an m60 any box is fine, if m62 you'll need an e39 box to get the crank position etc, sounds like an awesome project! I'm sure the right box will come along eventually, there getting scarce these days!

If your using an m60 engine any gearbox is fine, if your using m62 you need a m62 gearbox for the cps as its on the fly wheel instead of the front of engine like m60s

Yeah, they really are rare. I'd love to know how much it cost to be an optional extra back in its day.

The box came from a 2000 E39 540i. It's being shipped from Lithuania as we speak. Described as good condition but who knows? What's the worst that could happen, I get it rebuilt?

£££££££££

On the bright side, it's the last big piece! Just need to start collecting a couple of front spoilers as that's literally the last big item I need.

I can help you with a genuine alpine spoiler in need of tlc :)

Amazing. I can't afford anymore bmw parts this month but if you don't mind holding onto it till the beginning of the month that would be great! PM me pics and a price :)

That's why I think there fetching so much, there's no rebuild kit available for the getrag 6 speed box, don't know why as there's a fair few of them around.

I think when you bought a e34 540i or e39 they were actually cheaper with a manual box! As generally the automatic is a dearer option, crazy!

No I looked into it as a few others have for future proofing my 540i/6 but getrag don't supply a rebuild kit, I'm not sure if a gearbox specialist could do a custom job on it and fabricate any of the worn parts etc?

Ahh right. I was under the impression that specialist rebuilders could get hold of specific items from getrag/bmw, and not just entire rebuild kits. There is a place by me, precision services in inverness. There part of the Members of Federation of Engine Remanufacturers too. So I'm gonna be letting them do all my M62 mashineing and that. I'll speak to them and see what they can do reference manufacture/demand sole parts.
