Anybody carry a spare wheel?

Recommended Posts

Thread revival alert,

If someone want's to make me an offer on an unused steel spacesaver wheel for an F10/11 complete with nylon bag (zips a bit temperamental), extendable wheel brace and used E39 jack please PM me.

May post if I can arrange a courier at cost, otherwise collection within 10 miles of Barnsley

Thanks, I'd PM Duncan to ask.

Sorted now.

I take it back, I cant see where to set up or send the payment?

I'm using the Chrome browser and when I click on the Gold Membership - £10 under Featured Products I can then add to a cart and go through to add my payment details.

You still have this tire to sell.

Since changing from Run Flats I now use my old space saver from when I had my Z4.  it’s a 17” with 80 profile side wall so is the same size as my 18” with 45 profile. I just feel safer with a wheel rather then foam which knackers your tyre even if it’s only a nail in the centre which is totally repairable

I thought most foams are now water soluble so can be cleaned out no problem?

Having been prompted by a fellow member, I decided to try fitting my E61 space saver (BMW) to the F11.

I have had it in the boot for a while with the spacer and longer bolts but not tested it.

  • Firstly, the wheel brace that comes with the wheel was useless as there wasn't enough leverage. The scissor jack was fine and fitted the jacking point perfectly.
  • Secondly, I found the bolts I'd been sent with the spacer were the wrong size. Looking back through the thread Matthew has specified M14x1.25. Not sure what I have but I need to swap them.
  • Thirdly, I see a number of members have said the E61 space saver should be ok, but I'd welcome confirmation.

I have 19'' wheels with 245/40/R19 tyres. The spare is 135/80/R17. The size on the door sticker states 135/90/R17.When I position them side by side the spare is smaller in diameter probably by an inch.

Do you think the space saver appropriate for my car?

Thanks!

The supplied wheel brace is hopeless and the jack will do the job but I have a long bar and also one of the those cross shaped wheel braces with a piece of tube if I am struggling to remove a bolt.

The last space saver I bought was for an E61 but mine came with the correct spacer for the F11 and the right length bolts. I also have 19s and have never had a problem and I've had to use mine a couple of times. I do remember mine being the same diameter as my 19s though.

Yours doesn't sound right to me if the diameter is different.

I’ve just bought a slightly manky 19” off flea bay and a jack to keep in the garage.

If I get a flatty I’ll just get recovered to home, put the manky on until normal service can be resumed.

I've had 3 punctures since last Feb, and each time it’s been inconvenient - bank holiday weekends, or the day before a driving holiday.

Basically that E60 spare wheel is too small (in diameter) for the F10. It will work in a pinch but you will be driving with a wrong size wheel, which will cause the ABS/stability control to throw a fit and probably stop working. I'd also avoid using it on a driven axle for any length of time because the diameter difference will put a lot of extra strain on the differential (and transfer box if x-drive)

It will get you off the size of the road but if you want to be able to drive it for more than a few miles I'd recommend getting a correct size spare tire (or use a full size, I use a full size from the winter/summer set)

M14x1.25 is the correct thread for the F10, the E60 used M12x1.5 so that's probably what you have there.

Bet you are glad you tried it out safe at home before finding out the above at the side of the road when it was critical.

The difference in rolling radii of the E61 spare compared to the F11 spare will be subtly different but given the difference between these two will be less than the difference between the F11 19" wheel rolling radii and F11 90 profile tyre you should be o.k in an emergency if you reset your TPMS/TPWS and take it easy.

Thanks Andrew. So the E60 space saver will be OK used on the F11 if driven cautiously?

When you then compare the original 19" F11 wheel (style 351) and the E61 spare (80 profile) the the difference in speedo error is 4.75%. Rolling radii drops by about 15mm.

The F11 spare on its 90 profile gives a change in speedo of 0.56%. Rolling radii drops by about 2mm.  Shows that the F11 spare is more or less bang on.

That's not too bad. If you were to drive only a few miles at low enough speeds it might be o.k, in an emergency.

Might be worth trying for piece of mind?

Thanks to @Carlton for spotting my error in tyre size used.

These links above are now corrected for the 245/40 R19 style 351 8.5J rim used on the front and rear of an F11 or front of an F10.

Thats a bit more noticeable than I first thought going down to the E61 size. If you were to drive only a few miles at low enough speeds it might be o.k, in an emergency.

It's more than you expected because you've used 245/45R19 there, the correct size is 245/40R19. With that size the difference with the 135/90 spare drops to half a percent.

Ach, well spotted, thanks.  I'm running 18" at the moment which are 245/45, that's where I plucked the 45 from.

I'll correct my links.

I recently drove from Staffordshire to Turin and back and took a spare with me (one of my summer rims with a spare winter tyre fitted). Obviously I didn't get a puncture but the TPMS was confused at getting 5 signals. I had to buy a roll of tin foil and wrap the spare wheel to stop it faulting.

Thanks for that i always wondered what would happen in that scenario!
