Best engine oil from this list - 535D

Recommended Posts

Good Evening.

I am about to become the proud owner of a 56 plate Bmw 535d M Sport.

I have never really been into cars or had a decent one so this is quite a big step for me.

I am trying to find out about engine oil.

Can someone tell me what oil is the best to buy etc.

Does it need to be 0W or 5W or Whatever.

I know it has to be LL04.

If you don't mind looking at this list and helping me out.

Thanks inadvance

ps i stay in Scotland so it does get quite chilly.

Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30......

Mobil is probably the only oil manufacturer using 100% synthetic stocks on so called "synthetic" motor oils. My apologies to the other manufacturers...and to keep the record straight I don't work for Mobil!

I bought the 20 litres of the Gulf 5w-30 full synthetic. I don't think it is DPF friendly, but then i don't have one so  :P

Mine (530d LCI) seems to love Millers, its much quieter on that than either Castrol or Mobil. Changed every 10k mind...

Has anyone had any experience with which oils make diesels run any quieter? I read somewhere about this.

I been using Forte Diesel Treatment – does quieten down the engine a little but that don’t last long because you get used to the noise and it just sounds the same again haha

Not sure if it really does anything or has any real benefit?

Diesel additives will make the engine run quieter....at least for a little while. I don't really believe they do benefit the engine though!

If you actually use higher viscosity oil (don't recommend that, but just for the sake of experimentation), the diesel engine will run more quiet!!! That's a side effect of certain backstreet workshops when they use cheap motor oil 20W-50 or something similar and you feel so happy that your engine is so quiet!

The E60's a pretty refined place to be though, there's very little clatter even on start up if my old man's 525d is anything to go by.

The 4 pot isn't as refined :( from the outside it does sound quite loud

Haha, I really hate how noisy it is, when compared with the 320d over the road, it's like night and day!

Definitely, yours will probably sound like a Lexus V8 compared to mine! Ha

I use Vauxhall gm oil 5-30 fully synthetic

£28 for 5 litres , I get it for £18 on a trade account so worth it

In terms of it being good oil

My car has just done 210k miles

I've done the last 80k on it

Always used the same oil as I'm an ex Vauxhall omega owner enthusiast

So got my account with them

Who finds their dipstick and on-board display different..

Changing mine the other week I take it to the 3/4 mark, start it up then leave it for 15 mins then again top up to the 3/4 mark.

The reason i do that is i find the oil takes a while to get there and when i check later it's up to full

Anyway checked it the other day after a week, the level is about spot on full, but driving along i check on the iDrive and it's saying I've overfilled it.
