    Exhaust upgrade help

Dear All, Great day at Ace Cafe the other day, even if it was lashing with rain the whole time. I have a favour to ask of the forum. At some point in the future I am looking to up grade my exhuast, most likely a Cat Back system, possibly a full replacement since one of my cats seems to faulty anyway, thrown up an EML. I'm going to go for a quad exhaust but can't stomach the thought of paying c. £1-2k for something that doesn't sound right, and there's only so much convincing that can be done by the supplier that it will sound as I would want. The only way to do it is to fit it, and pray that it's right. So what I was wondering, if there is anyone out there who has a 530i with an exhaust upgrade (not necessarily a quad, but preferable) who would be willing to let me listen to it to see if the sound is what I'm after. I would come to you wherever you happen to be, and would be a good opportunity to meet some other forum members and have a good chin wag about cars, and for me to go on a bit of a drive!. If you're exhaust is the sound that I'm after, then I know exactly what to go out and buy. Any offers? Any help would be much appreciated. Regards, Dan
  2. Hi guys, just wanted to share my recent audio upgrade completed today. I bought an F10, 520D recently and as we all know the OEM speakers are not the best. I start searching for compatible speakers and found the usual suspects, Focal IFBMW, MTX, Bavsound stage one, Match, ESX, Harman Kardon etc. I am very price conscious and usually search for days until I am settling for something and in this case, I focused my attention towards the Focal range as I like the brand and had 135VR's and 165VR's in one of my previous BMW E46 coupe. It was out of discussion paying £5 - 600 for the IFBMW and as I wanted to have high-quality sound for the best price I started to look for 4" Focal speakers. I found quite a few and the interesting thing is they are not advertised as compatible with BMW, I am sure they will put the price up if they will.... I bought a pair of these for the back https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Focal-AUDITOR-R-100C-4-10cm-2-Way-Car-Coaxial-Van-Door-Dash-Speakers-240W/262351114177?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 And a pair of these for the front https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Focal-Integration-ISC100-4-10cm-2-Way-Coaxial-Car-Speakers-200W-Total-Power/401093581124?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 As well 2 pairs of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10cm-4-Front-Rear-Door-Speaker-Adaptor-For-BMW-X3-2007-Onwards/351735857820?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 As well you will need 4 x 61138373583 and 8 x 61130006664 from BMW for a neat setup. The result is, to say the least, impressive with very clear midrange and crystal clear highs. The Integration speakers in the front have a rotary tweeter which you can adjust to face the driver and raise the soundstage and you really have the impression that the sound is coming from the pillars. All in all, for £160 all in I find it very hard to believe that there is a better solution to upgrade your sound system to match this setup and wanted to share with you all, and believe me you will not regret it!
  3. So far: I'm using the high outputs of the floor subs to feed an Amp in the boot, to then drive 2 medium sized cabs, each with 8 inch sub drivers (from my previous E39). The stock basic (head unit powered audio) system has a somewhat querky setup. As noted elsewhere, the other speakers are hi bass pass filtered and do not contain full range sub frequencies, hence using the floor subs as a feed (instructions here and info here and this post explains why). The head unit also does strange mixing left/right when pushing the balance fully left or right, so leaving the left/right balance centered. Edit: Took the Amp remote from boot cigaret lighter socket where again brown is earth/neg (wondered why it wasn't working...). This will only trigger the Amp remote when then engine ignition is on (when the engine is running). I've added some front door tweeters in the quarters, also as previously noted on this forum, the over EQ'd brightness of the head unit requires dialing back the treble to the middle. Referenced the BMW E60 E61 FRONT DOOR PANEL REMOVAL video, but I left all connections and airbag attached, using a large cardboard box (15cm above the bottom of the door) and a chair to hold the door card whilst tapping in the tweeter (with inline supplied crossover box) onto the front door speaker feed. Remember, any audio wire with a brown stripe is the negative (German). Fitted a pair of Hertz DT 24.3 80w Tweeter 24mm (~£30 for a pair including crossovers, not plug n play but a workable fit, full specs here). Caution: the black tweeter quarter grill (door triangle) is very soft and can be easily damaged/bent/creased. Whilst an improvement I still have to balance the full strength of the boot subs relative to the floor subs with respect to a bass setting about +3 (where 0 = centred). Not sure this kind of upgrade is going to be as successful as with other cars and might find a less muddy solution by disconecting the floor subs (that requires removing the front seat bolts again!). Noticed some CPU like electronic interfearance being dragged in from somewhere, maybe the hi output feeds running too close to kit in the bottom of the boot or along side wiring looms without using twisted pair wiring. Luckily when the boot Amp is switched into sub frequency mode the interfearance is not a problem and is largely filtered out. Tomorrow I will try putting the sub drivers closer together centered instead of at extremes. I'm looking for the best orientation for phase compatibility with the stock floor subs? After trying this n that and swapping polarity, I'm currently settling on the boot subs facing upward and situated up against the rear seats. Not too bad but I feel there could be a better sub location setup, any opinions? Edit: Found some good detailed E60 upgrade options and background info here. and here! And another related thread here and more legacy budget options info here

    Quarry Motors

Has anyone used Quarry motors for a palletised lump transplant or their "Motorsport Upgrades" service. The S62 package looks somewhat enticing, however looks a little cheap and i'm weary that they may be under-representing what the actual costs may be. http://www.quarrymotors.co.uk/MotorsportUpgrades.aspx?udt_531_param_detail=441 Cheers Deepan

    E34 Battery

Morning guys, I need a quick bit of help / advice please. My E38 750 has a 700CCA battery in it and its supposed to have 850 - 900CCA. I can buy a battery from Halfords that will fit it no problem but my question...... Can I fit the 700CCA battery in my 525 E34? the voltage is the same and she should only take the Amps needed???? Any help would be appreciated
  6. Hello all, I've been reading into upgrading the brakes on my E34. I noticed that a lot of people will go the E31 Brembo 4-pots for the front, and 540i brakes in the rear. There are many threads here, and I've read through most of them. Anyway, I decided that instead of going this route, I would instead go for the lighter (well same weight as single pots for E34/E32) 4-pot Brembo's from the E38. I managed to source a nice CHEAP, fully functional set from my local breaker. I've got a drawing to have some adapters made up, as the E38 brakes are not direct bolt on. This was obviously discussed at length in this thread. I'm now at the point where I'm ready to install the calipers up front, but I need to find out which brake hoses to use. Are the E38 and E34 brake hoses the same internal diameter, will they work with the brembos, or do I need E38 brake hoses? This is one piece of information I've been unable to find whilst researching quite a lot. I know there are a few people here who have done this upgrade, maybe they can shed some light? I believe the hoses will be the same size, however, I don't have extra hose to hand to test this out. Thanks for anyone who can help!

172 Wheels upgrade on E60 SE

Hello guys, I am the owner of a very standard 2004 520i SE , with some pretty ugly 16" alloys and I've been looking for quite some time to upgrade them. I've found a set of genuine 19" staggered 172 Spider alloys on fleebay, in a good condition for a fair price I would say. I know these wheels are on the M sport, but will they fit on my car without any problems? Is the ride height going to increase or is it going to be the same as with the 16"s. To complete the look I am going to change the bumpers and side skirts to M sport ones so the car won't look too bad Thanks in advance.
  9. Looking to change my iDrive from the standard CCC to CIC and I've contacted a couple of people that do it and I've been quoted close to 3 grand. I know that half the price is the cost of the unit and the labour involved in taking the thing out and fitting it back again, but Is this a straight swap and after just a matter of coding? Because if it is this, I could buy the CIC myself and fit it and then take it to get it coded. Would all the cables and things in the back of the unit be the same as on the old one or is there cutting and soldering involved?
  10. Has anyone replaced the Business Cassette Radio fitted in the 525D Touring 2003 registered. I would like a radio (preferably DAB/FM) with single CD player (not multi-disc cassette holder) that will support Bluetooth (for hands-free mobile phone) plus MP3 input on front panel. I've been told that one needs to cut out a piece of metal strip that sits at the back of the radio aperture in order to enable modern radios to fit. To retain the cars authenticity I don't want to do this as I might want to re-fit the BMW radio one day. Help and ideas appreciated; thanks. Geoff
  11. Hi im wondering if anyone can help me with this problem I am having - I recently upgraded my headlights to H7 HID kit on my 520d Msport Lci Step Auto - everything was going fine but then I noticed when I switch the HID lights on I get a little jerk in my car. It does not happen all the time, just on the odd occasion. If I am driving in Manual mode, it either automatically drops my gear down or if i am slowing down/standstill in traffic and I switch the light on I get the jerk and it changes the gear to DS Or if i am driving in D the little orange light on the gearbox goes out for a split second and lights back up, also this results in my gear to drop down automatically (only notice it as my revs increase). Its a bit hard to explain so sorry if i have confused you all - its like whenever it happens its like theres an extra volt that goes through the car to initially power up the H7 bulbs and thats what is causing the issue - but i may be wrong. I know bulbs have nothing to do with the auto gearbox, but as that auto gearbox also gets some sort of power supply from the battery, thought this may all be interlinked. Any one experienced this before? Or any advice on what i can do? I really like the HID upgrade I have got and do not want to get rid just coz of this jerk issue I am having. Also dont know if the problem is interlinked, I have 10w CREE LED AE bulbs in which flicker when the car is initially started and I have also got white LED number plate bulbs with a built in resistor (these have never flickered though when the car is started or AE or H7 bulbs are switched on)
  12. Hi guys - I am new to the BM family. I bought my first 5 series lci msport auto going back a few weeks ago and first thing I done was upgrade the Angel Eyes to 10W White LED bulbs, these have worked fine for last 2 week or so, but only last night I noticed when I started up the car one of the bulbs was flickering, I then switched the angel eyes on using the light switch and this stopped and they worked fine - any one else know why this may have happened? Also upgraded light to H7 Canbus free HID kit as the lights in my car have the projecter lense, and i noticed that when switched on it changed my auto gear from D to DS - this has only happened once however - maybe its me going crazy - any one else had any of these issues at all?
  13. Hi guys, this is my first post on this site and saw a few things that interested me. for example: heated seats vented seats electric rear blind lumbar support (mine has standard electric seats) possibility of these if money permits: upgrade to a MKIV navi rear heated seats bluetooth/hands free (preferably OEM) Voice control system. bassically why i started this topic is that i have some of the know how, (like the lumbar support instalation) but im having trouble finding parts and im even happy of looking to britain, europe and america to source them (im an aussie ). any help that anyone can give on where to get these parts, without it costing an arm and a leg, would be priceless! cheers.
