Okay, I know there are a lot of threads about replacing the struts but I'm still unsure of one thing; do you need to remove the hatch completely to install the larger struts? A couple of months ago, I had a go at replacing the struts and found the smaller struts for the glass to be quite easy, once you realise that the little retaining clip on the ball socket end needs to be removed first, I lost one strut before realising that! But what I couldn't figure out was how to remove the larger struts without undoing the large, Torx nuts that hold the top of the hatch to the body and moving the hinge slightly to enable the strut to come out. Is this really the only way to do it? These nuts are painted over and would require breaking that paint. I have a touch-up kit but I'm still apprehensive about doing it, especially there. It's a perfect place for moisture to get in. Or maybe I'm being over cautious? The last time I went in because the tail wouldn't stay open at all and I found that the "ball end" of one of the larger struts had simply popped off. I put it back on and the tail stayed up. Now it seems to have come off again so I would like to install the new struts that I have. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, One of my front shocks is weeping very slightly and I was advised, a few months ago now, that it wouldn't pass the MOT like this. First of all, is this for sure? Does even a small leak residue automatically fail the MOT? Either way, I'd like to replace the front shock absorbers, they are now 11 years old and on 60k miles. Car is SE spec. I am considering going for the OEM Sachs (~£100 each from Motormec). Any suggestions for alternatives? I've also had a suggestion for Bilstein B6's, although these are considerably more expensive at £220 each. Also, any reccomendations for having these fitted somewhere in North London or thereabouts? I understand its ~3 hours labour? Thanks for any help.
