  1. Hi folks dropped the Alpina in today to have the tin worm dealt with, not pretty under there at the moment! as this is getting pretty common now with the e39 chassis i was rather hopeful there would be a wealth of repair panels available to choose from but my google hasn't brought up too much useful for underside repair sections. the guys at the workshop are more than capable of fabricating anything thats needed but repair sections are always helpful to speed a job along. has anyone found anything in the past?
  2. Hello All, I'm in need of your assistance. There is a rust patch on the back of my car above the bumper and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good place in the Leeds/Bradford area that could repair it, so it looks as good as new. I have attached a couple of pictures. Please advise. Thanks
  3. Rapidly coming to the conclusion that I need to replace the E39 . The MOT doesn’t expire till 23rd October, so got a couple of months but the reasoning is as follows: Will need major bodywork treatment, welding and anti-rust protection (possibly new fuel lines and brake pipes) – Car is 16 years old, and now is in a very salty climate Will need a service within 5000 miles Will need front tie end rods replaced (got parts inc new gaiters) Will need rear suspension control arms replaced (got some of the parts) Got a couple of electrical gremlins which I’m hoping a new rear light cluster will sort (Waiting for one from eBay for £8) Mileage is now 262K!! I’ve put 100K miles on it, so really it doesn’t owe me anything now. It’s a shame as it’s very comfortable and economic for the mileage I do. 45mpg easy and over 600 miles to a tank. Could make a great project car for somebody keen on DIY etc as the engine and transmission are solid. Here is a list of what I have done to it in the 5 years I've had it: New Alternator New Water Pump New AC Compressor New Turbo Wiring Loom New Turbo vacuum pipes New Coolant Hoses (All) New Underfloor Fuel Pump New Battery New ABS Pump Custom Longlife Stainless Steel Exhaust with Secondary Cats removed. Vortex Breather (E60 Style BMW OEM) Swirl Flaps Removed EGR Delete New Engine Mounts (BMW OEM) New Front and Rear ARB (BMW OEM) New Front Complete control arms (Lemfroder) New Shocks Front & Rear (Sachs) E60 Screen Washer Nozzles M Sport Multifunction Steering Wheel Focal Integration rear speakers Alpine Headunit with Bluetooth iPod LED Interior lights and puddle lights Hella Angel Eye Headlights Hella Xenon Ballasts Larger Front brake callipers, discs, pads (Pagid) New discs/pads all round (Pagid) 4 x Summer Wheels/Tyres (Conti) 1 x Summer Wheel 4 x Winter Wheels/Tyres (Conti) 1 x Winter Wheel (Flat Tyre on rim) Rear LED Registration lights Rear Number Plate carrier Various Brodit mounting plates Plus always had a full service every 15000 miles ish including air, pollen and fuel filters. Engine is very smooth and in perfect running order as is the transmission, although that hasn't ever been serviced! Pretty much full service history detailing all the above. Loads of spares including: Part installed Parking sensor loom. Front and rear Bumper trim + all sensors Shadowline Trim CD Player and Mounting Frame Amplifier Mounting Frame T60 Telestarter module Undertray Rear Celis Lights and Ballasts (One needs rewiring) Boot Wiring Loom Custom Made Front Door Speaker mounts for 165mm Woofers (Never Fitted) Bad Things: Boot doesn't lock (needs the spring replaced in the solenoid) Rust in all the usual places Paint Lacquer peeling on bootlid. Boot wiring loom hacked (see above new loom though) CD Changer cables cut (Do have Alpine compatible CD Changer and cables to replace though) Basic spec of the car - 05/2000 MY E39 530d SE Auto 142Kw - Full leather interior with climate control - 262K miles So, I wonder realistically what it is worth? £800 - £1K perhaps given the amount of work already carried out?
  4. I had a 2002 Z3 2.2 sport last year and when I finally got underneath to see whats what, I had the shock of my life. My 1973 beetle was in considerably better nick than this. It was if it had spend 5 years at the bottom of the ocean. The diff case was falling apart, the rust was coming off in 3mm thick flakes. The fuel tanks were about to drop off as the metal straps were almost corroded through. My fault for buying a motor on eBay, and not checking it out 1st!
  5. My '02 M5 is largely very, very tidy and looks great. But up close I've spotted some tiny rust specs coming through on the ROOF of all places. Also the usual bubble under the tailgate needs sorting (and one in the corner of the tailgate). Oddly, my newly acquired '97 540i tourer is totally rust free...Maybe it's been garaged, whereas the M5 lives outside - although it doesn't go anywhere near salty winter roads. Anyway, I'm looking for recommendations for a good bodyshop who could sympathetically and effectively treat the rusty areas and then repaint. Plus I want someone to take off the jacking pads and check/ rust proof those areas. Anyone have a recommendation for a South-East (preferably Oxfordshire or Wiltshire based) bodyshop?

  7. I havent had chance to spend time under my 2003 530d. I know the diffrence between surface rust, good metal, and sitting-in-the-ocean-metal. Do E39's suffer from much rust? I can see my diff looks dry and not rusty. Are there any particular areas that require rust prevention mainenance? Old z3: Click on the pictures to enlage!
